Effective human resources management (HRM) is vital for the success of small- and medium-sized hotel enterprises (SMHEs). However, there are no single studies concerning HRM practices of SMHEs in Turkey. The purpose of the study is to analyze the current HRM practices of SMHEs in Turkey. Findings from 313 SMHEs revealed that they did not possess formal HRM practices and this resulted in lack of professionalism in these firms. The study concludes that small- and medium-sized hotels, apart from microfirms, should formalize their HRM practices. However, formalization of HRM practices requires financial support and training of owner/managers on managerial skills and the importance of HRM. Cooperation and collaboration among the government, educational institutes and firms are recommended in order to improve HRM applications.

A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy ; This research explores cultural aspects of Thai Small and Medium-sized Hotels (SMHs) as they navigate their way through environmental management problems. In addition to the context of business motivation, which sets the groundwork for the cultural attitudes findings, the study also examines how government officials' actions on environmental policy in relation to SMHs are affected by their cultural attitude. An interpretive paradigm employing qualitative method (semi-structured interviews and observation) was conducted. Key informants are from 27 SMHs and seven related government officials from six districts in Nong Khai city. This study was piloted during June and July 2013 and the second main study during February and May 2014. Additional revisits and interviewing were conducted during May 2015. This study reveals that relationships dominate SMH owners' motivation, and that they are motivated by family lifestyle, social position and business opportunity. Environmental implementation in SMHs is also mainly influenced by culture. A complex socio-cultural system, e.g. seniority and hierarchical, power-based notions and patron–client relationship, has led to the Thai style of enforcing legislative action in the government sector.

Objectives: This study explored the working experience of patient safety managers (PSMs) in small- and medium-sized hospitals (SMHs). Methods: A qualitative study comprising 3 focus group discussions (6 people each) was conducted. Patient safety managers working in SMHs-hospitals with 100 to 300 beds-were included. Researchers analyzed the transcribed script, and a conventional content analysis was performed to describe PSMs' working experience. Results: All the PSMs were nurses and with an average (SD) work experience of 1.51 (1.02) years. Five core themes and 17 subthemes were derived. The PSMs reported that it was difficult to perform patient safety tasks alone and cooperate with other departments. Because of members who did not acknowledge PSMs' authority as experts, PSMs experienced identity confusion. Lack of an established patient safety culture in SMHs hindered the PSMs from performing patient safety-related duties. The government continues to train PSMs and provide materials; however, they are not suitable for SMHs and thus cannot be used. The PSMs hoped to overcome the system's initial phase and become professionals. Conclusions: Patient safety managers faced difficulties because of the lack of guidelines, training, and systems. Nevertheless, they have attempted to overcome these problems themselves, so they can be recognized as professionals. This study's findings can be used as basic data to provide differentiated support for PSMs, based on hospital size. ; restriction

PurposePrevious literature has identified human resources as a key source of competitive advantage in organizations of all sizes. However, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) face difficulty in comprehensively implementing all recommended Human Resource Management (HRM) functions. In this study, we shed light on the field of HRM in SMEs by focusing on the context of Greek Small and Medium-sized Hotels (SMHs), which represent a dominant private sector employer across the country.Design/methodology/approachUsing a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) and 34 in-depth interviews with SMHs' owners/managers, we explore the HRM conditions leading to high levels of performance, while taking into consideration the influence of internal key determinants.FindingsWe uncover three alternative successful HRM strategies that maximize business performance, namely the Compensation-based performers, the HRM developers and the HRM investors. Each strategy fits discreet organizational characteristics related to company size, ownership type and organizational structure.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge this is among the first empirical studies that examine different and equifinal performance-enhancing configurations of HRM practices in SMHs.

While Pierre Bourdieu argues that cultural capital is grounded in distinct aesthetic knowledge and tastes among elites, Francie Ostrower emphasizes that cultural capital grows out of the social organization of elite participation in the arts. This article builds on Ostrower's perspective on cultural capital, as well as Milton Gordon's concept of the ethclass group and Prudence Carter's concept of black cultural capital, to elaborate how culture's importance for class and ethnic cohesion is rooted in the separate spheres of arts philanthropy among black and white elites. The argument is empirically illustrated using the case of arguably the most prominent mainstream and African-American museums in New York City – the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met) and the Studio Museum in Harlem (SMH). Findings show that relative to the Met board the SMH board is an important site of unification for elite blacks, and in comparison to the SMH board, the Met board is a notable site of cohesion for elite whites. This article advances theory and research on cultural capital by elaborating how it varies among elite ethclass groups. Moreover, it highlights how the growth of African-American museums not only adds color to the museum field, but also fosters bonds among the black middle and upper class.

Accurate cause of death coding leads to organised and usable death information but there are some factors that influence documentation on death certificates and therefore affect the coding. We reviewed the role of documentation errors on the accuracy of death coding at Shahid Mohammadi Hospital (SMH), Bandar Abbas, Iran. We studied the death certificates of all deceased patients in SMH from October 2010 to March 2011. Researchers determined and coded the underlying cause of death on the death certificates according to the guidelines issued by the World Health Organization in Volume 2 of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Health Related Problems-10th revision (ICD-10). Necessary ICD coding rules (such as the General Principle, Rules 1–3, the modification rules and other instructions about death coding) were applied to select the underlying cause of death on each certificate. Demographic details and documentation errors were then extracted. Data were analysed with descriptive statistics and chi square tests. The accuracy rate of causes of death coding was 51.7%, demonstrating a statistically significant relationship (p=.001) with major errors but not such a relationship with minor errors. Factors that result in poor quality of Cause of Death coding in SMH are lack of coder training, documentation errors and the undesirable structure of death certificates.
