The article deals with the topical issue of personal and professional presentation of young women and men as subjects of their economic socialization. The analysis of the empirical research results of social and psychological determinants of young women and men economic self-presentation, as well as the results of a gender audit is done. A conceptual model of economic behavior of young people in the context of patriarchal / traditional and egalitarian / democratic coordinates is presented. The ambivalence of professional self-realization of young people, in particular, the orientation of girls to economic self-affirmation in the microeconomic environment, and boys - in the macro-society, as well as the commitment of both sexes to traditional gender stereotypes is revealed. The low level of material demands of women, including professional ones, is motivated by the socialized attitude to the financial supremacy of men. In psychological portraits of young men and women who present their professional potential, and hence the economic future, more similarities than differences are observed. Young women show a higher level of subjective general and personal locus of control in professional activities and psychological efforts to defend their beliefs.

Most methodology works of scientific research were published in Soviet times, and therefore contain many ideological stamps. Part of the book is written somewhat arrogant and uninteresting. It raises objections and introduces some unnecessary concepts into the scientific circulation, in particular, the so-called methodological approach. The use of this concept, in our opinion, only complicates the understanding of the essence of scientific research, because between the subject and the object of research there are, firstly, methods as research tools, and, secondly, methodological principles, as the basic rules of use these tools. That's all.The most important methods of any scientific research are such general scientific methods like analysis and synthesis. The first of these means disassembly, dismemberment of the whole into component parts, and the second -the assembly of parts into a single whole. Both of the methods are essential, because they derive from the very definition of science, which involves two interrelated processes - the study of existing and the creation of a new one.Application of analysis in modern historical science helps to distinguish in the object of research, first of all, such basic problems as the development of economic and political relations, the internal and foreign policy of the state, cultural processes, etc. In historical works devoted to certain personalities (objects), the issues of political, social, scientific and educational, educational, entrepreneurial (and other) activities of the historical person are considered. Concerning synthesis, the application of this method involves the definition of the subject of research and the creation of the corresponding design; in historical sciences – the plot. The second important pair of general scientific methods is induction and deduction. The induction involves the transition in the process of cognition from the individual knowledge to the general; from knowledge of a lesser degree of community to a greater degree of universality. In other words, it is a method of research and knowledge associated with the generalization of the results of observations and experiments. Accumulation of reliable facts in the process of knowledge leads to the establishment of certain regularities, the creation of generalizations, axioms, the formulation of laws, which, in turn, contribute to the knowledge of certain phenomena, facts, processes, that is, serve as the basis of deduction – the transition from general to individual. Methods of induction and deduction are extremely important for historical sciences. Using the method of induction, the historian first explores the material and written historical sources, on the basis of which then reproduces the picture of the past, shows the vital activity of historical societies, the lives of individual personalities, historical processes and phenomena. Instead, the method of deduction allows you to use already acquired material in the subject-practical cognitive activity, in the study of specific phenomena and facts. Thus, this method greatly facilitates and accelerates the research process. Deduction also provides a process of studying a particular historical phenomenon against the background of common historical processes. Besides, at its disposal each scientific area has a peculiar methodological complex only to it. The task of the scientist is to choose in the whole great arsenal of methods the most effective and rational precisely for his research. However, despite the fact that historical sciences have their own special-historical methods of research in their methodological arsenal, the basis of any historical research are two pairs of general scientific methods: analysis-synthesis and induction-deduction, because they are essential in science, without their application is possible only a simple gathering of facts.

The article deals with current historiography of the research program of modernization in Western – mostly US – academic literature. The article stresses the importance of the theory's reputation for its success or failure. The paper traces the origins of the critique of the discourse of modernization. The interrelation between academic scholarship and ideological partisanship is being examined. It is argued that ideology is an integral part of academic discourse, so the task of academics is not to get rid of ideology but to control it and keep within reasonable boundaries. The topicality of the issue raised in the article is determined by the hegemony of neo-liberal thinking which is a descendant of modernization theory with its belief in the exemplar nature of the Western experience. The article juxtaposes two mutually exclusive approaches to modernization theory, that of E.Tiryakian and I. Wallerstein. While the former is advocating the worthiness of modernization theory on grounds of its intellectual prowess, the latter is claiming that the idea of modernization was ideology, not a theory and as such was stillborn. Thus, they arrive at mutually opposite conclusions – the revival of modernization theory versus its burial. The article examines the vast literature on the origins, developmental history and political connections of modernization theory. The involvement of the founders of the modernization theory into the policy making towards the Third World is discussed. The role of modernization theory in buttressing the US policy during Vietnam War is revealed. It is argued that reputation of the scientific theory is critical to its reception and survival. The modernization theory today in Western nations is faced with radical left rejection, liberal critique and uncritical apology. At the same time there is a dangerous trend in Ukraine when the modernization theory is being perceived and (ab)used in a ritualistic manner. This is posture towards modernization research program should be combated by means of restoring value of rational discourse and selective appropriation of the legacy of the idea of modernization.

During the last twenty years the concept of «social capital», which is built on the intuition that social ties and relations can serve as a useful resource for individuals and society, actively takes positions in the social sciences. The research program of social capital synthesizes various theoretical paradigms, going beyond those academic and ideological frameworks in which it arises. From the areas of theoretical sociology, and economic theory, where the concept of social capital is constructed, the theory goes into the policymaking, combines the perspectives of economic, sociological and political science. The limits of application of concepts of social capital in research practice through the reference to the history of concepts and theories were comprehended. Determined, that the critical importance of social capital for social theory is the result of claims for an interdisciplinary significance. Critical view of such interdisciplinary perspectives points to the ideological and methodological limitations of the use of some concepts of social capital. However, the undisputed fact of this research program, based on the integrative tendencies of a unified science of society. Consequences deriving from the social capital are identified in the margins of various disciplines. In the political sphere – is civil engagement and institutional effectiveness, in economics – the reduction of transaction costs, in social sphere – cohesion and solidarity, or even life satisfaction and well-being. The broad range of the research program of social capital at different levels of social phenomena stretches from the perspectives of historical macrosociology to micro-perspectives of network analysis. Within the framework of the research program is no consensus on how to operationalize and measure social capital, which significantly reduces the prospects of its indicators use in the determination the steps of policies.

This article examines complexity theories and their applicability for social studies. Once these theories revealed complex system of autopoietic self-organization, nonlinearity and far from equilibrium social theoretics were encouraged to apply complexity methodology to investigate social complexity in a frame of political studies, sociology, international relations and other social disciplines. As a particular case, the article studies John Urry's profound contributions to complexity theoretical shifts in social science. He was not only one of the most important British sociologists, but also a scholar network builder and public intellectual who changed the face of British, and indeed global, social theory. Known as a creator of the new mobility paradigm associated with a 'Lancaster School', he stands in contrast to the empiricist traditions inAmerican and British social sciences, while struggling for post-disciplinary approach against the hierarchies of academic departments, and their disciplinary closure. This also explains his critique of conventional sociology and its division from the natural sciences.J. Urry was primarily a macro-level thinker concerned with systems and global processes. Therefore, his project starts with complexity theory and its implications in terms of global complexity, complexity of social sciences in opposition to its previous linearity and structure/agent duality. J. Urry argues for breaking down the division between 'natural' and 'social' sciences, since both are characterized by complexity This complexity turn led Urry directly into his conceptualization of mobilities as a second theoretical turn, which deals with dynamic urban forms and automobility. Finally, a third theoretical turn in his thinking is geo-ecological. Here J. Urry is acting as a micro-level theorist of the body, leisure, consuming, tourism and nature. Tracing this trajectory of his theoretical evolution is more informative for it moves us from his early recognition of large-scaled complexity into reconsidered human-scaled problems of how we ought to live in the world.Key words: social and natural sciences, theory of complex systems, chaos theory, mobility, John Urry.
