This article aims to deepen studies on the means of social and evangelizing action by Baptist missionaries in old Northern Goiás. It seeks to understand how this space was configured as a stage for important changes in the way women's participation was seen and evaluated within this denomination. Because changes in the organization of social relations always correspond to changes in representations of power, the view of women within the Baptist Church – as well as the way women are viewed in the social world – undergoes a modification from the moment women actively position themselves as missionaries. This deconstructs the conception of women as solely spouse and mother, and substituted it with an idea of women as not just spouse and mother, but also as teacher, missionary and, in certain cases, as single, female missionaries.

Jürgen Habermas is a modern thinker who presents us with a rationality capable of creating spaces of freedom that correspond to the ideals of social emancipation that have always crossed the horizon of Western modernity. Through several studies by this author, including critical contributions to his theory, we will develop his epistemological reflection and his relevant contribution to the renewal of German critical theory. We will begin by presenting his critique on positivism, and then summoning the dispute with Gadamer about hermeneutics. Habermas adopts hermeneutics, albeit with some criticism, as a facilitator of self-reflection that allows revealing to social sciences the errors of both objectivist social science and vulgar analysis of language. We will follow this thinker's perspective on the interests that guide knowledge and, finally, we will take into account his theory of communicative rationality, which stresses Habermas's universalist optimism, based on a healthy pluralism that allows human consensus.

Between Beauvoir and Butler, we will question whether the "becoming woman" establishes the distinction between sex and gender, becoming a mode of acculturation that, in addition to the anatomical differentials, designates a performance in transformation. From Beauvoir, we will see: situated, subjectivity is established between civilization and intercorporeal relations. Marking the woman as the second sex, Beauvoir ratifies the ambiguity as a human factor, weaving reflections to the freedom, oppression, recognition and feminine condition. Of this, Beauvoir is questioning that Butler interrogates the genders. By tracing the incipient use of gender in "becoming woman", Butler suggests revisions to the phenomenological notions of subject, body, situation, and sexual difference. It promotes a performative conception where the genre is a constant becoming. It describes how the genres are constituted, considering that there are no ideal genres. Thus, becoming gender means that as a body we dramatize and style it. Criticism, this performance personifies a way of acting where repetition, innovation, necessity and contingency are re-signifiable.

Although almost two decades passed on the end of the Cold War & the preponderance of so called civil wars in lieu of wars between states, the problem one ethnicity & ethnic violence continues to receive a special attention on the part of a great number of researchers from most diverse domains of the social sciences. The present article tries to make a critical review of the academic debates on the subject. For brevity's sake, we refer only to the most visible & widespread perspectives, here presented through three great schools of thought -- Primordialism, Instrumentalism & Constructivism. Throughout we seek to assess their respective strengths & weaknesses in the construction of strategies for conflict management. Adapted from the source document.
