Determinantes sociais da saúde: o "social" em questão ; Social determinants of health: the "social" in question
This article seeks to discuss the vision of the 'social' in the field called social determinants of health. For this, bibliographical research was conducted, based on references from the field of human sciences, by authors such as Latour (2012) and Santos (1988). It begins with a general characterization of the field of social determinants of health, especially political and scientific views. Then, it presents the critical elements characterizing paths on the thinking of these authors. The study sought to highlight reductionism increasingly present in the approach to the field of social determinants of health. These reductionisms that ultimately limit further reading about the complexity of life in society and reinforce the commodification and trivialization of life. Santos (1988) notes that, in front of these reductionism, science cannot be merely producing a scientific paradigm, but also a social paradigm - the paradigm of a decent life. The thinking of Latour (2012) brought arguments to rethink the 'social' beyond a specific and limited domain of reality, as something always external to the subject and to their own health. The fragmented view of the field of social determinants of health is what we put into analysis and make inquiries as a way to raise future discussions on the topic.

Etnicidade e violencia etnica. As differentes abordagens teoricas e a sua utilidade na gestao de conflitos
In: Relações internacionais: R:I, Heft 11, S. 129-150
ISSN: 1645-9199
Although almost two decades passed on the end of the Cold War & the preponderance of so called civil wars in lieu of wars between states, the problem one ethnicity & ethnic violence continues to receive a special attention on the part of a great number of researchers from most diverse domains of the social sciences. The present article tries to make a critical review of the academic debates on the subject. For brevity's sake, we refer only to the most visible & widespread perspectives, here presented through three great schools of thought -- Primordialism, Instrumentalism & Constructivism. Throughout we seek to assess their respective strengths & weaknesses in the construction of strategies for conflict management. Adapted from the source document.
Ecology and management of tropical secondary forest: science, people, and policy. Proceedings
Ilus. Tab. Bib. Sum. (En) ; Secondary forests developing on agricultural land after it is abandoned, or as the fallow period in systems of subsistence agriculture, are an increasingly important component of the forest resources of the tropics. They fix and store carbon and may contribute to the alleviation of global warming, they are refuges for biodiversity in agricultural landscapes, and they are low-cost sources of a tremendous variety of forest products. The final years of the 20th century represent an opportune time to bring together researchers concerned with biological, ecological, social/organizational, financial/economic and political aspects of secondary forests and their management, to share their experiences and opinions concerning secondary tropical forests and to contribute to the development of a forward-looking, cross-disciplinary research agenda. The conference had the following objectives: 1) to summarize the state of knowledge of tropical secondary forests from the standpoint of the ecological, social and political sciences. 2) to report the most recent results of research on secondary forests from all relevant disciplines.

O projeto neoliberal de resposta à "questão social" e a funcionalidade do "terceiro setor" ; The neoliberal project in response to the "social question" and the functionality of the "third sector"
; This article critically problematizes the debate on the concept of the "thirdsector," departing not from the fact that it is called the "third sector," butfrom the more general reforms undertaken under the hegemony of big capital, particularly financial capital. It tries to characterize the sectoralized origin ofthat term, which, on the one hand, impedes a vision of the totality and, as aresult, undercuts a socially transformative perspective and, on the other hand, determines its clear functionality for the hegemonic project of capitalrestructuring. This project, oriented by neoliberal postulates, mystifies civilsociety and disarticulates and pacifies social struggles, at the same time that itpromotes a greater acceptance of state reform, particularly with regard tosocial security and the state's responsibility to treat the "social question" as aright of citizenship.

Des/colonización epistémica del "yo" e incomprensión política del "otro"
In: Griot: Revista de Filosofia, Band 22, Heft 3, S. 23-32
De-colonial reasoning establishes a peculiar manifestation of contemporary critical theory closely linked to the practices of the social sciences and humanities. However, there is a need for a critique of the dominant models and hierarchies of nationalities of knowledge, of the constitutive silencing of technologies and narratives of modern participation, of subjectivities, corporealities and agencies. This paper argues that the human and social sciences can and should be rethought from an epistemological multiplicity that dialogues and takes into account the forms of knowledge creation that are generated in extra-scientific and extra-academic spaces.
