That normal wisdom is the result of normal health, physical and mental, is the basic principle of the program of health education in the schools of New York State as here outlined. The aim of course is the formation and development by children of automatic good-health habits, as well as the stimulation of normal play. The program provides for giving school credit for health improvement as well as for mental progress. Emphasis is laid upon the need of adequately trained teachers of physical education; the education of the community to assume its own responsibility for efficient administration; and the stimulation of executives and legislators to grant necessary appropriations.

This article analyzes the Health at School Program from the Brazilian Ministry of Health and Education through the legislation and guidance materials available on their websites. The study was done in the municipalities of the state of Paraná in order to identify those who had joined the program. To scale the deployment of the latter, an empirical research was held in two municipalities of the state in 2012. Interviews were conducted with program managers through visits to the Health and Education departments of the municipalities. The results showed that the program, despite having suffered from some initial resistance, has been kept functioning by the networks of schools, with the participation of the education and health sectors. The program proved to be an interesting policy to promote sectorial integration towards an implementation of integrated public policies. This program was considered relevant insofar as promoting integration between the health and education sectors leads to significant changes in the relation between both parties. In 1979, the Federal Government released a report, "Healthy People," that examined the major health problems and the associated preventable risks facing Americans. For the school-age population in particular, several problem areas are notable, such as violence (suicide and homicide), accidents, and drug and alcohol abuse. A number of risk factors related to personal behavior have been identified for these and other health problems facing young Americans. Comprehensive school-based health promotion programs have the potential to influence positively the health status of the school-age population. This article highlights some of the more important recent Federal activities related to school-based health education.
