Science is facing a fundamental turning point of its history. Never as in this historical moment it appears giant and powerful, but at the same time it shows high fragility: the concentration of information control power in the hands of few commercial groups, the iniquity of a system that benefits developed countries, the restriction of academic autonomy by political and economic power, the precariousness of working conditions of young researchers, the increase in the number of cases of scientific fraud and misconduct, the questioning of its authority by a portion of the public. Can openness be understood as a system capable of strengthening science and treating the diseases that afflict it?
; The aim of this work is to (re)construct the emergence process of the "Science and Technology Studies" (STS) field, as a result of broad disciplinary negotiations (especially between history of science, sociology of science and philosophy of science). In order to achieve this, I proposed an integrated methodology that I labelled "Socio-Historical Epistemology". From the historical point of view, my Ph.D thesis provides a detailed survey of the academic emergence of the "STS" interdisciplinary field, from the 60s to the mid 80s (made also through archive research and oral history). First of all, I traced some intellectual, academical and socio-political trajectories, in order to explain the conditions of the emergence of this field (from the 30s to the 60s). In the following chapter I proposed a cartography of the major research units and pedagogical programs in U.K., U.S., France, German Democratic Republic, Federal Republic of Germany, Austria and Netherlands. Finally, another chapter is dedicated to the professional and international societies in STS. The results of this historical inquiry have been interpreted and organised through the framework of the "sociology of scientific fields" and the "sociology of knowledge". Furthermore, the philosophical approach has made possible an epistemological analysis of both the historical and the sociological genesis and development of the interdisciplinary context of research of the "STS". In this sense I argued that disciplinary boundaries in social sciences are, at the same time, diachronically constructed and reconstructed, through a collective process of controversies and negotiations and due to epistemological claims.
Although it is not a new phenomenon, citizen science is a form of collaborative research whose importance has grown in recent years. There is no single definition of citizen science and although this is the prevailing expression, activities are often referred to by other terms. However, the various terms used emphasize the key element, which is the voluntary participation of non-expert citizens in scientific research. Citizen science encompasses a wide range of activities and practices that can cover the entire life cycle of a research, from data collection to publication of results, and even evaluation. The first part of the article briefly traces the history of citizen science, highlighting the implications of the different facets through which it is defined. Then, it gives an overview of the state of the art, the initiatives, guidelines and good practices, the open issues, and the most representative institutions and organizations. A series of data are also provided regarding its dissemination, and reflections on the impact of this form of research on the scientific community and society, as well as on specific aspects related to open science and sustainable development. Finally, the article focuses on the role of university libraries and public libraries for citizen science.
While the field of foreign policy has generated an impressive amount of research, there is still much to be explored and explained of the way in which regime types (totalitarian and democratic) influence the dynamics of state behavior at the international level. The present study examines in a comparative way the characteristics that influence the process of foreign policy making in totalitarian and democratic states. This can help achieve a better understanding of their foreign policy decisions and also help reveal valuable patterns in their decision making process. For the purpose of the present study, the United States of America and the People`s Republic of China were chosen as representative cases of the above mentioned highly contrasting regimes. The foreign policy and diplomatic relationship of the two countries is analyzed on the period between the 1940s and the 1970s using comparative foreign policy analysis, their differences providing a fertile ground for comparison.
The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of 'Dialogues' as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with 'others', which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, "dialogue" as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title 'translated' into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.
The University of Camerino Botany Library was established in 1828 by Vincenzo Ottaviani, founder of the botanical gardens. The library collections have grown over the years thanks to the professors' passion for scientific research, and its history reflects the transformations occurred in the scientific and academic world, the political passions that would have led to revolutions in Europe and the institutional problems of a small Italian university with a rich and complex historical background. By analyzing the library's historical inventory and its collections' development we can catch a glimpse of the feverish scientific spirit of the time – a time of great innovations and knowledge exchange at an international level.
Significant changes affect contemporary societies, thus influencing politics and economy by transforming the tools and the strategies that are regarded as useful for the training of subjects.Within the frame of citizenship awareness, an artefact of capabilities is used to re-connect the poles of various false dichotomies: theory and practice; intuitions and inclinations of individuals with real life. Accordingly, this enterprise goes towards the overcoming of the school-labour dichotomy. This remark is consistent with the idea of capability when defined as the ability that allows the person to have the possibility of making substantial choices. The possibility of achieving the training of skills would allow people to enforce their rights and to transform them into real opportunities of life—provided freedom is regarded as the end of this process.

Presentazione relativa all'intervento tenuto al webinar "Le scienze del patrimonio culturale on Air.
