Increased international tourism in large European cities has been a growing social and political issue over the last few years. As the number of urban tourists has rapidly grown, studies have often focused on its socio-spatial consequences, commonly referred to as touristification, and have linked this to gentrification. This connection makes sense within the framework of planetary gentrification theories because the social injustices it generates in cities have a global pattern. However, gentrification is a complex process that must be analytically differentiated from tourism strategies and their effects. Whereas gentrification means a lower income population replaced by one of a higher status, touristification consists of an increase in tourist activity that generally implies the loss of residents. Strategies to appropriate and marketise culture to sustain tourismled economies can also shape more attractive places for foreign wealthy newcomers, whose arrival has been theorised as transnational gentrification. Discussions on the relationship between gentrification, transnational gentrification and touristification are essential, especially regarding how they work in transforming an urban area's social fabric, for which Seville, Spain's fourth largest city with an economy specialised in cultural tourism, provides a starting point. The focus is set on the processes' timelines and similar patterns, which are tested on three consecutive scales of analysis: the city, the historic district and the Alameda neighbourhood. Through the examination of these transformations, the article concludes that transnational gentrification and touristification are new urban strategies and practices to revalorise real estate and appropriate urban surplus in unique urban areas. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersion

In this dissertation, I explore how flamenco performance models intimacy and solidarity in Andalusian communities based in Seville and Morón de la Frontera. The adaptability of flamenco performance underscores the inherent decision-making that goes into determining which physically, socially and affectively constructed environments are appropriate, if not ideal, for making music. Since expression within flamenco is largely based upon collective experience and reciprocal execution, the performance space constitutes a defining element of both social and sonic aesthetics. Drawing from ethnographic fieldwork, I look at how artists and communities are responding to pressing subjects that involve cultural patrimony and protection as well as political corruption and interference. The first two chapters chronicle the maintenance and development of a flamenco guitar tradition in Morón that proliferated into the hands of international students beginning in the 1960s. I analyze how the introduction of recording and sound reproduction technologies in Morón served to create new types of mobility that separate sounds from their original bodies and spaces of production and, in so doing, alter and blur the boundaries between public and private in communities of flamenco performers and listeners. Next, I focus on the work of twenty-first century flamenco group Son de la Frontera, who organized the music of Diego del Gastor into lush and varied arrangements. By tracing this music back through particular genealogies of listening, I reveal how the Morón style has become entangled in larger processes of countercultural and transnational encounters that converge and become audible through the work of Son de la Frontera. In the final two chapters, I discuss how the recent encroachment of institutional capital and decree upon artists and venues has threatened, rather than supported, the local flamenco community in Seville. I demonstrate how members of this community are responding to these attacks through radical forms of performance protest. Highlighting the dangerous and deceptive elements of intangible cultural heritage, I interrogate the ways in which flamenco artists and community members continue to negotiate distinctions between public and private performance in an era of globalized media circulation, neoliberal economic regimes and complex localized structures of kinship and power.

At the same time, a stable structure and division of labour with rules and hierarchies is necessary to sustain their organisation and social influence. The study explores this organisational dilemma by drawing on the category of flexible institutionalisation. It enquires how actors experience this balancing act between spontaneous solidarity and hierarchical structures in the life of the collective. The study focuses on the PUMA complementary currency in Seville, which was the brainchild of a neighbourhood association, a degrowth group and the local community. Puma functioned as a mutual credit system with a passbook and later as a digital wallet. The research presents primary data collected in 2014, 2017 and 2019 and concludes that the institutionalisation of social innovations is purposefully incomplete and regulates spaces of spontaneity and caring to preserve solidarity and identity.

During the sixteenth century many Catholics yearned for an active role in lay religiosity. One avenue to achieve this was through membership in a penitential confraternity. In the first half of the sixteenth century, the pioneering penitential confraternities concentrated on the development of membership requirements and how to translate the imitatio Christi on a secular level. The organization of the second generation of Sevillian penitential confraternities coincided with the Council of Trent (1545–1563). As Church leaders met to define their faith based on an existing foundation and to justify their vocations, the same anxiety and struggles were present on the local lay level as the subsequent generation of penitential confraternities sought to uniquely define themselves through faith and attempted to control their public persona.

Nature-based solutions (NbS) are currently a priority of international institutions (UN and EU) to improve urban resilience to hydro-climatic risks. However, responsible institutions, such as river basin authorities and local governments, while still prioritizing gray infrastructure, often present resistance to these strategies. This paper analyzes this issue in the case of Seville (Spain). We identify historical and recent institutional practices related to the development of gray infrastructure and the experience of citizens' movements that demand the implementation of green infrastructure and the naturalization of urban space. Based on the theoretical framework of the sustainability transition, the article contributes to the identification of the factors that hinder or trigger the processes of change, drawing from the results of a case with a long tradition in hydro-climatic disaster management. The research has included an in-depth review of risk planning in the city of Seville, semi-structured interviews with 24 social and institutional actors, and participant observation of both urban planning processes and the practices of citizen movements. Our results show that the generation of shared visions clashes, first with conflicting perceptions of the city's strengths and weaknesses regarding risks; second, with contradictions between institutional discourses and practices, and finally, with the operational limitations of public participation processes.

This article studies how northern European migrants adapted their collective strategies to Seville's institutional framework in the last third of the sixteenth century and how these strategies shaped the emergence of the so-called Flemish and German nation. It analyzes the group's motivations to refuse the creation of a particularized commercial institution, as well as the alternative institutional mechanisms they developed to organize themselves in southern Spain. The article sheds light on the role of open-access institutions in Spain to facilitate long-distance trade and gives a new insight into the evolution of the commercial connections between the Spanish monarchy and the Dutch Republic during the Eighty Years' War.

This research investigated the quality of communication between doctors and patients of the Public Health Services in the city of Seville, Spain. Two hundred and twenty-eight doctors were selected at random from all of the clinics in the city for interviews. The interviews were guided
by a specially composed questionnaire, which obtained answers to 30 variables grouped under four headings: variables which influence doctor-patient communication, interest in the consultation, information used in the consultation, and qualities of doctor-patient communication. Chi-squared
tests were carried out on the different groups, which confirmed the objectives proposed in the investigation – among which was the need to set up communications training programs for doctors in order to improve their communication skills.

This study analyzes the relationship between the territorial concentration of the Chinese immigrant population and their perception of health and well-being in Seville, a city in southern Europe, where this ethnic community has seen one of the fastest growth rates in recent times. An ethnographic design and a merging strategy by data transformation were adopted. The results show that there is a greater perception of good health and well-being among the Chinese population, who live mainly in neighborhoods with a high concentration of Chinese immigrants with a high socioeconomic status. However, this territorial concentration does not result in a lower perception of integration, affection or support from the host society. This apparent contradiction could be explained by the importance of relations with their fellow nationals at work as a key element in the socialization of the Chinese population.

In the specific study of medieval fortifications, an advanced knowledge of the state of conservation is required to achieve an effective diagnosis and a detailed evaluation that will provide the basis for establishing the criteria for prevention and restoration. The characterization of the materials and the knowledge of their degree of deterioration is one of the key points to address a restoration project in any rammed earth wall. In the last decades, a number of medieval fortifications built with rammed earth in Spain have been studied and restored. Although there is currently a better knowledge of the construction materials involved and their degradation processes, no detailed work has been carried out to date on the Seville City Wall, which is an outstanding sample of this kind of heritage. The aim of this work is hence to study the material characterization of the most recognisable section of the whole structure, which is known as Macarena Wall, that runs between the Macarena and the Cordoba Gates. The results and discussions presented offer a novel approach for this heritage asset and would play a solid criterion for a correct restoration proposal. For this purpose, ananalytical methodology already known and verified in the literature has been followed, which has been adapted according to the specific requirements of this monumental building. Among the most relevant results of the analytical and experimental phase, it is highlighted that capillary humidity and the transport and crystallisation of salts is one of the main causes of the deterioration of this monument. As this building is a clear reference of rammed earth military structures, the analytical procedure and the results obtained are an interesting reference for other similar interventions.
