As part of a larger research project, we asked 1,806 adults from France, Greece, and Italy (in the larger project, Portuguese students were included) to discuss the causes of the current economic crisis and the strategies that should be adopted by the countries to overcome it. The six factors extracted by the factor analysis revealed that the economic crisis was attributed to the depletion of resources, the weakness of the financial system, planned conspiracy, system inequality, overconsumption, or the weakness of the political system. These causes had cross-national structural equivalence and overconsumption – a people-blaming cause – as opposed to conspiracy attributions to a global power or to structural inequalities inherent to the system. Further analyses found three types of strategies to exit the crisis – conforming to EU requests, rationalizing the public sector, and leaving the European Union – but failed to establish cross-national structural equivalence. Results thus suggest that there is some similarity in the discourses of the media that is reflected on people's perceptions about the causes of the economic crisis, but that the strategies to exit the crisis are more linked to the socioeconomic conditions of the countries.

Previous research on violence during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina have emphasized the importance of narratives without focusing on narratives mentioning war violence, but they have not analyzed stories on war violence that were the product of interpersonal interaction and meaning-making activity. The aim of this study is to fill this knowledge gap by analyzing the narratives of survivors of the war in northwestern Bosnia in the 1990s. The focus lies on analyzing interviewees' description of war-time violence and also analyzing discursive patterns that contribute in constructing the phenomenon "war violence". Analysis shows that the interpersonal interactions that caused the violence continue even after the violent situation is over. Recollections from perpetrators and those subjected to violence of the war do not exist only as verbal constructions in Bosnia of today. Stories about violent situations live their own lives after the war and continue being important to individuals and social life. Individuals who were expelled from northwestern Bosnia during the war in the 1990s are, in a legal sense, in a recognized violence-afflicted victim category. Several perpetrators were sentenced by the Hague Tribunal and the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina on War Crime. The crimes committed in northwestern Bosnia are qualified as genocide according to indictments against former Serbian leaders Radovan Karadžić and Ratko Mladić. All interviewees in this study experienced and survived the war in northwestern Bosnia. These individuals have a present, ongoing relation with these communities: Some live there permanently, and some spend their summers in northwestern Bosnia. Institutions in the administrative entity Republika Srpska (to which northwestern Bosnia now belong administratively) deny genocide, and this approach to war-time events becomes a central theme in future, post-war analysis of the phenomena "war violence", and "reconciliation". Therefore, it is very important to analyze the political elite's denial of the systematic acts of violence during the war that have been conveyed by the Hague Tribunal, the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina on War Crime, and Bosnian media. The narratives in my empirical material seem to be influenced by (or coherent with) the rhetoric mediated in these fora. When informants emphasize extermination and the systematization of violence during the war, they produce and reproduce the image of a mutual struggle on a collective level. The aim of this struggle seems to be that the described acts of violence be recognized as genocide.

Die Digitalisierung unserer Lebenswelten ist allgegenwärtig und ermöglicht die Überwachung unseres Alltages in bisher ungekannten Formen. Warum aber gibt es dagegen so wenig Widerstand, obwohl Datenschützer immerzu warnen und Whistleblower wie Edward Snowden das ganze Ausmaß der Massenüberwachung öffentlich machen? Nils Zurawski konstatiert, dass solche Fragen am Phänomen selbst vorbeigehen, wenn sie nicht die Bedeutung des Konsums als elementares gesellschaftliches Element ernst nehmen. Er zeigt, welche symbolische Kraft Technologien haben und wieso Digitalisierung zu einer Re-Feudalisierung von Lebenswelten führt. In dieser Perspektive wird Überwachung zu einem Teil des Konsums und wirkt identitätsstiftend. In the fall I had the pleasure of working with twenty-two musicians on a concert featuring American music from 1929–1949. On the program were pieces for classical violin, folk songs, jazz standards, fiddle tunes, gospel jubilees, country ballads, and stylized original compositions. This semester I traded my bow for a laptop and have been researching and writing a thesis in double time, one titled A Singing Country: American Folk Expression and The Lomax-Hurston-Barnicle Expedition of 1935. In it, I discuss three weeks in June of 1935, retelling the local narrative of a team of spunky folklorists traveling through Georgia and Florida, and of the creation of an American identity that developed as a reaction to the turbulence of the post-war era. At times it resembles a history paper; at others, an ethnography. As I am a performer by nature and an academic by training, I felt that I needed to attach another creative outlet to this side of the project. I also recognized the irony in writing about the transmission of folk culture without having any oral or aural component, and so I present to you this Lecture-Performance. Inspired by John Lomax's work with Lead Belly, I've included musical interjections to help explain and draw parallels between the written work and the music it studies. In presenting live music and a library of field recordings—in conjunction with research from my paper—my hope is to provide access to folk culture that will encourage new discourses on the national experience preserved in American folksongs. Of primary concern is the legacy of this music and its relevance to our modernity: though many have never heard of Alan Lomax, his mark on the shape and sound of America's cultural identity is remarkably familiar, even if it isn't recognized. In an age of cultural amnesia and nostalgia instigated by the infinite increase of technological knowledge, it is easy to deem bristly field recordings as anachronistic. This is my effort to reawaken and preserve an interest in America's cultural roots, but ...

"Postcommunist elites play rational power games throughout East Central and Eastern Europe today. But their games differ according to the structure, behavioral codes, and informal orientations associated with the paths of elite change. Although democratic institutions and procedures are in place just about everywhere, the differing elite power games account for major differences in extra-electoral politics and, thus, for wide variations in the quality of postcommunist democracies. The extent of the particularisms - clientelism and patronage, blurred functional autonomies and boundaries, violations of horizontal accountabilities, manipulations of the media and judiciary, harassment of Opposition elites, personal vendettas, persecutions of minorities - define these power games, and they can be linked systematically to the patterns of elite unity, differentiation, and circulation. We view combinations of these patterns as constituting the critical elite conditions for different types of political regimes, including consolidated democracies." (author's abstract)

This open access book considers the development of the sharing and collaborative economy with a European focus, mapping across economic sectors, and country-specific case studies.
