The STS movement, which emerged in embryonic in the middle of last century and made over the decades, remains relevant to the society we live in. Thus, it is recurrent the need for a participation of this society in the direction given to the scientific and technological activity, demanding more democratic decisions. In this sense the research is based on the questionings: what is the characterization of educational practices carried out in STS field in Basic Education and in teacher training?; And, as has been the participation of society in scientific and technological development? As objectives, we seek: (i) identify which subjects have participated in decision-making on scientific and technological development, and how; (ii) analyze data referrals in respect of educational practices STS; (iii) to investigate whether the STS assumptions are advancing the Academy to implement educational practices; (iv) to point out horizons for Science Education in the perspective of curricular settings guided by the constitution of a culture of participation. It is a bibliographical research whose methodology was the Discursive Textual Analysis, composed of unitarization, categorization and communication. The corpus of analysis emerged four categories: 1) Limitations practices STS implemented; 2) Methodological aspects of practicas STS; 3) Social participation in the development of ST in classrooms; 4) Justifications for insertion of STS practices.
The guidelines that regulate ethics in research involving human beings in Brazil, especially those that refer to the areas of the human and social sciences and to the sciences of education, are analysed in their relationships to bioethics and the sciences of life. The difficulties raised by researchers in the human areas in their dialogue with the interdisciplinary ethics committees are considered, including the possibility of disconnecting the authorization for research in these areas from the CEPs-CONEP system, the National System of Committees of Ethics in Research run by the National Health Board. Nevertheless, it is argued that the main focus of this system of ethics in research is the protection of the physical and mental health of the participants, which is considered a question within the area of bioethics and health, and broadly as a biopsychosocial process. It is also observed that the data collection techniques developed by the human and social sciences (interviews, questionnaires, observations or participant observations) are also utilized by the sciences of life. These considerations indicate that the dialogue between the areas, proportioned by the interdisciplinary composition of the ethics committees, is salutary and necessary for the good functioning of the system, despite the possibility, contemplated in the legislation, of specific committees existing for judging research ethics in the human and social sciences. It is proposed that new research be carried out for monitoring the functioning of the committees of ethics in universities and research institutions to perfect the regulatory system.

This article discusses the use of the concept of class in health research, different sociological approaches to social stratification and class structure, and the explanatory potential of the class concept in studies on social determinants and health inequalities. It also elaborates on the operationalization models that have been developed for use in sociological, demographic, or health research, as well as the limitations and scope of these models. Four main operationalization models were highlighted: the model developed by Singer for studies on income distribution in Brazil and adapted by Barros for use in epidemiological research, the model of Bronfman and Tuirán to study the Mexican demographics census and adapted by Lombardi for epidemiological research, the model proposed by Goldthorpe for socioeconomic studies in the UK and adapted by the Spanish Society of Epidemiology, and the model proposed by Wright for research in sociology and political science, which has also been used in population surveys in health. In conclusion, each of the models presented is consistent with their underlying theoretical concept, precluding the selection of one model over the others. This article seeks to discuss the vision of the 'social' in the field called social determinants of health. For this, bibliographical research was conducted, based on references from the field of human sciences, by authors such as Latour (2012) and Santos (1988). It begins with a general characterization of the field of social determinants of health, especially political and scientific views. Then, it presents the critical elements characterizing paths on the thinking of these authors. The study sought to highlight reductionism increasingly present in the approach to the field of social determinants of health. These reductionisms that ultimately limit further reading about the complexity of life in society and reinforce the commodification and trivialization of life. Santos (1988) notes that, in front of these reductionism, science cannot be merely producing a scientific paradigm, but also a social paradigm - the paradigm of a decent life. The thinking of Latour (2012) brought arguments to rethink the 'social' beyond a specific and limited domain of reality, as something always external to the subject and to their own health. The fragmented view of the field of social determinants of health is what we put into analysis and make inquiries as a way to raise future discussions on the topic.
Added to this factor are the restrictions caused by the financial crisis of 1929, which implied a drop in external demand and the emergence of new competitors. In this context, intellectuals are more intensely subordinated to the political situation than to cultural issues. The function and performance of intellectuals, in this way, go beyond the strictly intellectual field and enter that of the political. Thus, the present work aims to demonstrate the relationship between Brazilian modernization and the institutional and intellectual development of Social Sciences in Brazil.

Ilus. Tab. Bib. Sum. (En) ; Secondary forests developing on agricultural land after it is abandoned, or as the fallow period in systems of subsistence agriculture, are an increasingly important component of the forest resources of the tropics. They fix and store carbon and may contribute to the alleviation of global warming, they are refuges for biodiversity in agricultural landscapes, and they are low-cost sources of a tremendous variety of forest products. The final years of the 20th century represent an opportune time to bring together researchers concerned with biological, ecological, social/organizational, financial/economic and political aspects of secondary forests and their management, to share their experiences and opinions concerning secondary tropical forests and to contribute to the development of a forward-looking, cross-disciplinary research agenda. The conference had the following objectives: 1) to summarize the state of knowledge of tropical secondary forests from the standpoint of the ecological, social and political sciences. 2) to report the most recent results of research on secondary forests from all relevant disciplines.
; The living conditions of the inhabitants of Iauaretê, an indigenous area in the municipality of São Gabriel da Cachoeira, State of Amazonas (Northern Brazil), have been negatively affected by population density, poor sanitation and maintenance of sanitation practices that are incompatible with that reality. To improve the population's quality of life, sanitation systems that are adequate to the local socio-cultural characteristics should be implemented, as well as educational processes with emphasis on social mobilization and community empowerment. The aim of this paper is to report and discuss a training course on health and sanitation using action research, directed to the mobilization of the Iauaretê indigenous people, with the objective of assisting other studies of this nature. In the meetings, issues related to environmental health were discussed, a Community Newspaper was constructed, the course participants made interviews and drew up claims documents. This experience has enhanced the participants' understanding of local problems and of the importance of social mobilization for the dialogue with governmental institutions that are responsible for providing sanitation services and for seeking better living conditions. The researchers and teachers of the training course benefitted from the construction of collective knowledge resulting from interaction with subjects of the investigated situation and from the recognition and redefinition of their representations, fulfilling the fundamental premise of action research.
Festivities not always are taken seriously as objects of study, but they have long attracted the attention of social scientists and other researchers. However, its analysis tends to be restricted and enclosed in some classical conceptions that, although relevant and useful, have become mere buzzwords and do not live up to the richness and complexity of this field of study. This article aims to provide some insights for the analysis of the festivities, focusing particularly on carnival and the way it has been treated by Social Sciences. It begins by exposing and discussing some theoretical recurrences – namely the theories of inversion, escape valve, resistance and communitas – and then presents other analytical perspectives that look at different facets of the festivities – cultural, social, economic and political – thus suggesting more in-depth and committed approaches to social reality and less hostage to the abstraction and dryness of theoretical models.

; From the inquiry about the possibilities for social participation and effective population interaction in health research, this article aims to analyze how the communicative dimension is approached in the National Policy for Science, Technology, and Innovation in Health. For that, the official document of this policy underwent a thematic analysis. The communication of science, technology, and innovation for population features mainly at the "scientific and technological advances diffusion" section, designated under different expressions that, although presenting distinct meanings and goals, are stated as synonymous in the document. Overall, the policy considers communication as the upright and unidirectional transfer of content to specific audiences – from a sender to a receiver. Such perspective contrasts with the horizontal and participative perspective of knowledge construction and technological appropriation preconized by studies on public engagement in science and scientific literacy. Considering our political, social, and cultural context, along with the merit of the Policy's creation process, communication proposals must include an effective public participation in science, technology, and innovation in health, respecting the democratic and participative principles postulated by the National Health System.
; The article presents a reflection on conception of poverty as a condition or circumstance that restricts personal autonomy and increases vulnerability. Focusing on bioethical arguments, the authors discuss two perspectives: (i) economic, that relates poverty to incapacity to work and (ii) ethical-philosophical, which relates poverty to inequality and injustice. The first perspective corresponds to the World Bank's view according to its recommendations to the political and economic adjustment in Latin America. The second one is based on concepts of fairness and equality as components of social justice. The subjects' autonomy and vulnerability have been under question in an international movement that requests revision of ethical guidelines for the biomedical research. The bioethical arguments presented in this article enhance a discussion on unfair treatment to subjects enlisted in protocols sponsored by rich countries and hosted by poor nations.
The Social Sciences demarcate their importance in the construction of the plural and democratic identity of modern society, whose civilizing principles have been historically represented in the process of elaborating the sociological, anthropological and politological discourse of civilizational progress. In Brazil, in recent years, more in-depth debates about the teaching of Social Sciences in Basic Education began to be guided. Since the mandatory teaching of Sociology, understood as a formative space in Social Sciences in High School, Brazilian society began to reflect on the place of Anthropology in school. In this perspective our research originates, in order to understand the teaching / learning process of Anthropology in the scope of Basic Education. Thus, the purpose of this article is to reflect on the contributions of anthropological knowledge and Social Sciences in the school context, thinking about their challenges and contributions in the teaching practice and in the construction of critical reflexivity about society and culture. ; From my field experience in Angola, I seek to question the traditional characterization of Brazilian anthropology - and by extension of the social sciences - as made by "Brazilians" about "Brazil", reflecting on the new profile of social scientists regarding ethnic belonging, racial and class that has pluralized for the past 20 years. This transformation of the profile of social scientists challenges the idea of "us the anthropologist" built on a nation-centered idea that does not recognize its class, race and territory, i.e. white, middle class, or socialized status in the south / southeast of the country. I defend the decentering of the Brazilian social sciences inspired by the new movements of decolonization of the social sciences. This decentering involves the recognition and politicization of the hegemonic whiteness of the social sciences as a condition for its critical revision.
