Corpo em risco
In: Athenea Digital: Revista de Pensamiento e Investigacion Social, Heft 6, S. 56-65
This article looks at the notion of 'risk' in the construction of the body as a spectacle. Its specific focus is on the body of the aerial acrobat and the production of an aesthetic of risk in the circus. The aim of the article is to understand the ways in which the illusion of risk is created in the circus, and how this fits into the framework of adventure-risk in society at large. In understanding how risk is created, we shall see that every risk has its counterpart in strategies of safety. We shall see that modernity's quest for thrills is linked to its concern for means of ensuring safety, though technologies of prevention, insurance cover, and rigorous training programs to ensure the technically perfect execution of skills. It is this concern for security which, paradoxically, makes an aesthetics of risk meaningful. Our research examines the point at which the aesthetics of risk is embodied in the body of the acrobat. We use a variety of research methods, including observation, field diaries, photography, image-searches, interviews and documents in the public domain. The questions we address are the following: what are the bodily risks of acrobatic shows? How are such risks used? How is it that sensitivity to bodily practices has changed so much? Our analytic path starts by contextualizing the notion of risk, then proceeds to characterize the spectacle of the circus, and continues through an account of the technical aspects of acrobatic skill. We arrive ultimately at our end-point: the 'aerial acrobat', which, in embodying the illusion of risk and the transcendence of human limits, stands as an example of contemporary subjectivity.
Ecology and management of tropical secondary forest: science, people, and policy. Proceedings
Ilus. Tab. Bib. Sum. (En) ; Secondary forests developing on agricultural land after it is abandoned, or as the fallow period in systems of subsistence agriculture, are an increasingly important component of the forest resources of the tropics. They fix and store carbon and may contribute to the alleviation of global warming, they are refuges for biodiversity in agricultural landscapes, and they are low-cost sources of a tremendous variety of forest products. The final years of the 20th century represent an opportune time to bring together researchers concerned with biological, ecological, social/organizational, financial/economic and political aspects of secondary forests and their management, to share their experiences and opinions concerning secondary tropical forests and to contribute to the development of a forward-looking, cross-disciplinary research agenda. The conference had the following objectives: 1) to summarize the state of knowledge of tropical secondary forests from the standpoint of the ecological, social and political sciences. 2) to report the most recent results of research on secondary forests from all relevant disciplines.

A questão da transição na teoria marxista e na teoria democrática ; The issue of transition in Marxist theory and democratic theory
Towards a Theory of Transition. ; The definitive death of the attempted Transitions from capitalism to socialismrepresented by Soviet socialism and European social-democracy also brought, for many authors, the burial of any possibility of going beyond capitalism. Inthis article, we will see that this is not the case for other authors. Our objectiveis to present some fundamental aspects of the current meaning of theTransition, from the point of view of Democratic Theory, as well as MarxistTheory. This analysis is based principally on the most recent work by IstvánMészáros, Beyond Capital. Towards a Theory of Transition.
