This study proposes a reading of the financial statements of co-operatives operating within the Florentine metropolitan area, with a view to underscoring business aspects of a quantitative and monetary nature. The entrepreneurial nature of the co-operatives is taken as read, focusing as with any other corporate entity on assets and economic results as indicators of success. The financial statements were collected from co-operatives with their registered offices in the provinces of Florence, Prato and Pistoia for the financial years 2004-2007, and the accounts were then aggregated, reclassified and analysed. The observations on the resulting data are then broken down by province and by type of co-operative (A or B).
Environment and society are increasingly affected by human activity. World society must constantly face many problems such as climate change, air, water and soil pollutions, resources overuse, human rights, child labor, social inequalities, health and safety. Since companies are the most responsible actors for these troubles, they are stimulated to develop and adopt policies of sustainable development. Practices of Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility are increasing within many businesses for reasons which go beyond the mere compliance with legislations and regulations. Nowadays, sustainable and responsible companies behave ethically for competitive reasons as well. The connections between sustainability and business strategy occurs through the pursuit of eco-socio-efficiencies, resources cost cutting, product-service differentiation, access to ethical funds, image and reputation, and the avoidance of fines, penalties and environmental taxes. Sustainability management occurs through a process that starts with identification of key stakeholders and the relative types of environmental or social impacts generated. Then, strategy must be developed, and communicated to all level of the organization. Leadership and commitment of top management are fundamental in order to diffuse sustainability guidelines, support the organizational structure and spread the new culture. In addition, performance measurement and management systems should drive the attainment of sustainability objectives. Environmental and social accounting systems must provide meaningful data in order to monitor the accomplishment of strategy and, at the same time, disclose the sustainability reports addressed to stakeholders. One important aspect of the process above mentioned regards the connection between strategy and performance measurement system. In order to translate sustainability strategies into actions measurable through performance indicators, it must be emphasized the support of Balanced Scorecard (BSC). The multidimensional conception of the tool advises to integrate environmental and social aspects of business activity within the four traditional perspectives of management in the BSC (financial, customers, processes, learning and growth). Therefore, the emerging concept of Sustainability Balanced Scorecard (SBSC) is referred to the additional feature of considering the environmental and social issues connected directly or indirectly with the execution of the business processes and thus with economic success. Cause and effect relationships in the strategy map show the relations between better social and environmental performances with increasing competitiveness and profitability. The airline sector is facing many challenges of sustainable development. Hence the case developed about a real carrier can help to better understand the matter. The implementation of a Sustainability Balanced Scorecard in Lufthansa Passenger Airline consists in a simulation of the process that starts with the identification of stakeholders and related environmental and social impacts. Based on these exposures, sustainability strategies are developed and formalized as several strategic objectives belonging to the different perspectives of SBSC. Afterwards, for each sustainability objective, numerous key performance indicators are developed in order to monitor single operative aspects related to the achievement of objectives. Finally, the construction of strategy map makes clear how sustainability performances are connected with financial ones. In conclusion, the analysis of environmental, social and economic performances achieved by the German carrier and the comparison with direct European competitor Air France KLM and other minor competitors helps to identify the successes and criticisms deriving from sustainability purposes.

The advent and spread of Internet and the Web have radically transformed the modes of communication. This book considers a particular ambit of online communication, namely that of science. In the first place, the author reconstructs the circumstances that gave rise to the modern system of scientific communication, and the qualitative and quantitative tools for scientific evaluation. After this, the analysis concentrates on the history, philosophy and architecture of the Web from its inception through to the most recent developments of both a technical (Semantic Web) and a socio-cultural kind (Web 2.0). Finally an open and democratic model for scientific communication is projected and proposed, made possible through the use of transparent, accessible and distributed tools.
; The research covers the current process of re-centralization of Social Housing in the suburbs in a part of the international context, which seems to be leading the cities to rethink and reshape themselves thanks to the awareness of the existing differences, as compared to the past, in the new processes of transformation in which the city is considered both as made up buildings and as a social space. As a conseguence of these two complementary aspects of the city, today, the role of contemporary suburbs seems to be interpreted differently, likewise the welfare rehabilitation tend to transform their characters in search of the "model city". Moreover the interest in this topic is the result of the realization that at the basis of the crisis of public models of intervention lies economic unsustainability and above all the misunderstanding of the needs of families in their specificity and diversity. In this sense the participation of citizens would actually be a valid proposal, even to solve the growing housing demand that is arising in the world. The aim of the research is to analyze, on the international level of Social Housing, the characteristics of participation and subsidiarity that characterize the redevelopment works aimed at less well-off families, in particular by analyzing the methods and means suitable to participatory communication in the project in Italian and Brazilian suburb areas. The first and second steps of the research were, respectively, a work of literature review on home emergency and new housing policies of urban development and a specific on the issue of participatory rehabilitation of Social Housing in suburb areas. Then the third step analyzes case studies selected by highlighting the analysis of the characteristics and performance requirements of participatory techniques of representation - communication, best suited to positively influence this process.
; This thesis focuses on the rediscovery of the ethical aspects of consumption. Principal consumption that is both sustainable and responsible presupposes what Weber termed a rational social action and represents an aspiration to live well. Vicarious consumption - which has existed for a long time – has become one of the principal if not the principal turning point in the society in which we live. Post-modern consumers, technically more prepared and able to express their wishes to the world of production and distribution, are aware that shopping has become an instrument with which to express commitment and responsibility in the public domain. Shopping has contributed to the affirmation and the determination of new ways of being and behaving, which converge with the new symbolic values tied to the emergence of new shopping habits. Using this hypothesis as a starting point, the empirical part of this thesis engages with a qualitative analysis of the development of the farmers' market, the embodiment of a short distribution chain. It examines a case study in the region of Molise, with the aim of understanding what is concealed behind the act of shopping and why there is now a preference for an alternative way of thinking that goes against the model of mass production. The farmers' market is a place of conviviality, where it is possible to stop, talk and consume something in company. It is an occasion in which physical, economic and above all social distances are diminished, where the idea of food shopping as merely an essential and alienating act, typical of the homo consumericus, is remote. Conceptions, habits and attitudes now promote a move away from a model of consumption founded on the principle of subjective well-being – a primary component of personal happiness, even when seen from the point of view of identity and expression – to a model in which consumers remain fundamental, but are now the main players in the quest for a better quality of life. The first part of the thesis, as an introduction, reviews the literature and discusses both classic and contemporary sociological theory, with the aim of producing a definition of the post-modern consumer. This is followed by a discussion of environmental sustainability and social responsibility, two concepts that are set in opposition to the logics of wasteful consumption, something that can be seen at the heart of the global environmental crisis. The ecological debate has become not only economic and political but social; the fruit of a new organisational logic in the field of consumption. The second part of the thesis deals with the field work, presenting amongst other things, data concerning the motivation at the heart of this new model of consumption. This is followed by a detailed exploration of the role of the producer/seller by focusing on the attribution of credibility which has been conferred upon them. A discussion of the concept of community, a concept still wide open in sociological debate, with a particular emphasis on the rediscovery of localism, concludes this research. ; Dottorato di ricerca in Sociologia e Ricerca Sociale (XXIV ciclo)
Sponsored by the University of Florence, the "National Committee for the celebrations of the bicentenary of the birth of Antonio Meucci" had multiple goals. These included: fostering a knowledge of the historic period in which Antonio Meucci lived in Florence, where he was born on 13 April 1808; contributing to spread and enhance technical-scientific culture among secondary school and university students; offering an occasion for reflection on the future of telecommunications from the perspective of technological innovation and the legal, regulatory, economic and social aspects; underscoring the influence of the telephone on the evolution of language, customs and means of expression, and finally co-ordinating and enhancing other initiatives not directly sponsored by the Committee. This book "Il telefono & dintorni" brings together a selection of the events, contributions and 'images' selected from among the numerous initiatives organised by the Meucci Committee over its three years of activity.
; The thesis aims to examine two types of social song in the nineteenth century, and in particular around 1848. The study of the song in the Italian and French context is analyzed through two lines of research. In the first part of the thesis, through the concept of sociability, attention is focused on the spread of the music production. The archival research, based on police documents, puts in relevance the sites of song diffusion (such as streets, tavern, cafés-concerts, the popular music associations and the goguettes) and the different uses of the song (the song as a form of oral expression but also as a writing on the wall and protest leaflet). In the second part the author conducts a detailed study of musical texts to highlight the different themes, images, figures of speech and some important aspects about politics and thoughts of artisans-workers to emphasize the differences of the idea of nation between the two contexts considered. It will be clear the role of songs as a place of emancipation and worker's claim. The point of view adopted allows the author to consider the song in its entirety, both as "text" and as "social practice". These operations allow to probe the social function of the song within the popular culture and its importance as a form of expression and vector of politicization. The author presents an international historical overview of studies on the popular song, paying particular attention to the new approaches came from the social and cultural history. The study of social song is a heuristic research tool, not only in a national context, but especially for its comparative function.
; 30 years after the Declaration of Alma Ata, the World Health Organization has given the attention on social determinants of health and on the development of healthcare according to "Primary Health Care" approach, both during working session of the Commission about Social Determinants of Health and during its 62nd Meeting (2009), where the participation to decisional process is an aspect that can affect the equity of health among and within nations. Starting from this framework the thesis, after a presentation of principal elements and theoretical concept - Social Determinants of Health, participation and participatory empowerment (Chapt. 1 and 2) -, focuses on: development and reform processes of health care service (Chapt. 3); international cooperation politics (Chapt. 4) and action (often experimental) of civil society in Zambia, considering (Chapt. 5) the main critical issues and limits of participation; the presence of instruments and specific participative empowerment strategies; decentralization and accountability politics; good practice and emerging suggestions from civil society; the broad outlines and functions of international donors and the Government of Zambia. This doctoral thesis aims at highlighting and interpreting both the recent debate regarding participation in health sector and different and contradictory level of attention to participation in development politics of health sector and the emerging of issues and practices of civil society. All this affects spaces and participation forms of governance and also decisional processes in health sector, which influence politics and health equity conditions themselves. The thesis has benefited from some periods of fieldwork carried out in Zambia (Lusaka, Kitwe and Ndola, in the Copperbelt region) besides to a research period EuropeAid Offices in Brussels. The methodology used has been articulated in observation, interviews, bibliographic and documents analysis.

For patients with epilepsy coping with the reaction of other people can sometimes be the most difficult part of living with the disease. In many Countries social implications of epilepsy have determined the institution of legislative interventions to patient's rights. Therefore the clinician's responsibility includes helping patients in knowing their rights and the most important laws that have special relevance for people with epilepsy. This article discusses legislative aspects, referring to the Italian law, concerning epilepsy management. Many areas of the life of a person with epilepsy are considered, such as driving, employment, and recreational pursuits.

The paper collects the greek and latin testimonies on real or fictitious acoustic automata. The words and the meanings concerning the automatic devices have been considered and analysed as the most important personalities of engineers and inventors, in order to determine and single out the possible connections between their creations and the social, political and economic systems that gave impulse to this creative impetus. The analysis tries also to point to the ludic aspects of this process, in which abstraction, epistemological mechanisms, empiric praxis, go together and alternate themselves in a game played between the inventor and his public, a game made of secrets, enigmas, discoveries and acknowledgement, in order to obtain concrete objects that share many aspects with the toys.
