"One of the purposes and necessary functions of a national association in the field of social work is to draw together the experience of various and different local agencies and channelize them back to the local groups for their use. In the field of case work practice it is particularly necessary that this two-way channel be kept open and free exchange be assured between local organizations and the national association. For the last two years the Training Committee of the National Association for Travelers Aid and Transient Service has been acting as one of the most vital channelizing units in our field. It has studied many of the problems and special skills found in transient service and has set down its analysis in a comprehensive report rendered to the National Association. Excerpts from this report are presented in the following pages. The Committee gave thoughtful study to one segment of case work practice in the transient service field--namely, the short contact--and explored in terms of worker-client relationship, the time-limited relationship. Since contacts limited by time are by no means confined to the field of case work with travelers and transients but do occur throughout the whole social case work field in both public and private agencies, we have considered it desirable at this time to make available in published form that part of the Committee report bearing directly upon "the short contact". In any pathfinding or exploratory study such as this, many agencies and individuals participate. It would be impossible to trace all the sources of ideas or to give a complete list of individuals and organizations that have contributed at some point to the study"--Foreword.
