Ausgehend von dem Diskurs zur allgemeinen Professionalität von Lehrer*innen fragt der Beitrag nach den Besonderheiten von sozialwissenschaftsdidaktischer Professionalität und nach Möglichkeiten, ihre Ausbildung und Entwicklung zu unterstützen. Sozialwissenschaftsdidaktische Professionalität wird dabei als ein reflexives Unterscheidungs-, Urteils- und Handlungsvermögen umschrieben, das sich sowohl auf die jeweiligen bezugsfachwissenschaftlichen Anteile (Soziologie, Ökonomie, Politikwissenschaft) des Integrationsfaches erstreckt, für das aber explizit auch die sozialen- und lebensweltlichen Kontexte der Lernenden konstitutiv sind. Wie Professionalität im Allgemeinen, umfasst auch die sozialwissenschaftsdidaktische Professionalität grundsätzlich die drei Wissensformen des wissenschaftlichen Wissens, des Handlungswissens ("Könnens") und des Professionswissens. Im Hinblick auf die Herausbildung und Entwicklung sozialwissenschaftsdidaktischer Professionalität wird die These einer engen Wechselbeziehung zwischen sozialwissenschaftsdidaktischer Professionalität und Forschendem Lernen vertreten. Überlegungen zu dessen fachspezifischer Fokussierung münden in dem Vorschlag zur (hochschuldidaktischen) Arbeit mit einer "(Peer-)Reflexionsmatrix". Zum Beispiel angewandt in unterrichtlichen Praxisphasen kann sie Studierenden dazu verhelfen, Beobachtungen, Wahrnehmungen, Beurteilungen, Irritationen, Handlungsalternativen, Unverfügbarkeiten, (Nicht-)Wissen, Theorieanfragen etc. kommunizierbar zu machen und reflexiv werden zu lassen. Perspektivisch soll die (Peer-)Reflexionsmatrix sozialwissenschaftsdidaktischer Professionalität damit Studierenden, Referendar*innen wie auch Lehrenden in Hochschule und Schule in ihrer fachspezifischen Selbstvergewisserung mithin der (Weiter-)Entwicklung ihrer Professionalität unterstützen. In einer Zeit, in der die Wissenschaftspolitik derjenigen Form von Ressourcenallokation besonderes Interesse entgegenbringt, die die Kreativität der Wissenschaftler stärkt, will man wissen, welcher Typ von Forschungsorganisation tatsächlich wissenschaftliche Kreativität begünstigt (also ausgebaut werden sollte) und welcher umgekehrt für kreative Arbeit weniger hilfreich ist (folglich zu vermeiden wäre). Dieser Informationsbedarf kontrastiert mit dem geringen Wissen, welches gegenwärtig zur Verfügung steht, und dies gilt ganz besonders für die Geisteswissenschaften. Das Papier liefert einige Ideen, wie diese Lücke gefüllt werden könnte. Da, aus soziologischer Perspektive, für wissenschaftliche Kreativität die Organisation der akademischen Arbeit, nicht aber der individuelle kreative Genius, am meisten zählt: von welchem Organisationstyp müssen wir dabei ausgehen und wie sehen wir die Beziehungen zwischen dem einzelnen Forscher und dieser Organisation? Das Papier setzt hier auf schwach institutionalisierte Organisationen und die kreative Kraft lockerer Verbindungen. Ein weiteres bedenkenswertes Problem betrifft die abhängige Variable: Wie soll "Kreativität" operationalisiert werden? In den Geisteswissenschaften verfügen wir weder über unbestrittene Qualitätskriterien noch über allgemein anerkannte Wissenschaftspreise, auf die man sich beziehen könnte. Die Verwendung von Publikations- oder Zitationsindices führt ebenso wenig weiter, da diese Daten, speziell in den Geisteswissenschaften, fehlleiten, wenn es um die Erfassung kreativer Ereignisse geht. Das Papier führt diese Argumente aus und entwickelt ein Verfahren, mit dem akademische Kreativität in den Geisteswissenschaften identifiziert werden könnte. Dieses Verfahren setzt auf die Methode der Gruppendiskussion. Schließlich wird der Gegenstandsbereich, auf den sich das Papier bezieht - "Geisteswissenschaften" - diskutiert. Bilden diese einen bestimmten Wissenschaftstypus, der klar von den, sagen wir, Naturwissenschaften, abgegrenzt werden kann? Wie immer man darauf antwortet, die Entscheidung wird ein willkürliches Moment haben, und - trotz eines vielleicht gemeinsamen Leitmotivs - Disziplinen mit unterschiedlichen Rhetoriken und epistemologischen Kulturen umfassen. Das Studium von geisteswissenschaftlicher Kreativität kann sich deshalb nicht auf eine "exemplarische" Disziplin oder einen schmalen Satz von Disziplinen beschränken. Abschließend schlägt das Papier vor, sich (vorläufig) auf mindestens fünf Disziplinen zu konzentrieren (Geschichte, Literaturwissenschaften, Altertumswissenschaften, Philosophie, Soziologie). ; At a time in which science policy attaches much importance to the mode of resource allocation that fosters the creativity of scientists efficiently one wants to know what type of research organization actually encourages scientific creativity (hence should be strengthened) and, conversely, what type is less supportive for creative work (hence should be avoided). This demand for information contrasts with the low level of knowledge available at present, and this is all the more true for SSH (Social Sciences and Humanities, "Geisteswissenschaften"). The paper presents some ideas for filling this gap. As, from a sociological perspective, what matters for scientific creativity most is the organization of the academic work, not the individual creative genius, which type of organization do we have to picture and how do we conceive of the links between the individual scholar und that organization? The paper argues for an open understanding of organizations and the creative force of weak ties. A further problem to be well sorted out is the dependent variable: How shall we operationalize creativity? Within the SSH we neither have undisputed quality criteria nor broadly accepted academic prices on which we could rely. To make use, as an alternative, of publication or citation ratios is also flawed because, particularly in the case of SSH, these data are misleading when we are interested in capturing creative events. The paper elaborates these arguments and develops a procedure suitable to identify academic creativity in the SSH. This procedure builds on the method of group discussions. Finally the subject matter the paper focuses on, i. e. SSH, is discussed. Do they constitute a distinct type of science whose organization can be contrasted with the, say, natural sciences? However one responds, the decision will be a bit arbitrary and, in spite of a perhaps common "leitmotif", will embrace disciplines with different rhetorics and epistemological cultures. Hence, the study of creativity in SSH cannot restrict itself to looking at one "exemplary" discipline or to a very small set of SSH-disciplines. Concluding the paper proposes to concentrate (temporarily) at least on five disciplines (history, literature, archaeology, philosophy, sociology).

Die sogenannte 'Historische Sozialwissenschaft' hat stets den Anspruch vertreten, für die Geschichtswissenschaft als ganzes eine Neuorientierung zu bieten. Ähnliches gilt für die 'Historische Anthropologie'. Beide Disziplinen stehen daher in der heutigen Geschichtswissenschaft als zwei Versuche einer innerfachlichen Neuorientierung nebeneinander. Der Beitrag beschreibt die Berührungspunkte und Überschneidungsbereiche und konstatiert, dass ihr jeweiliges Erkenntnisinteresse unterschiedlich ist. Jene menschlichen 'Elementarsituationen' und 'Grundbefindlichkeiten', für die sich die Historische Anthropologie interessiert, stehen mit Sicherheit nicht im Mittelpunkt der Historischen Sozialwissenschaften. Insgesamt spricht der Autor von einem 'offenen Projekt' in dem von sehr unterschiedlichen Ausgangspositionen ausgehende Richtungen konvergieren. ; This article deals with two different approaches in the german historiography. The 'Historical Social Science'-approach claims to have a general perspective, which needs a close link to the systematic social science, especially with sociology, political science and economics. Structures and processes of social changes should be explored and illustrated. Therefore, the structures of social stratification, of political power, and of economic developments are in the centre of the interest. On the other hand, the meaning of 'Historical Anthropology' cannot be defined in the same precise manner as that of 'Historical Social Science' - dued to the heterogeneous research orientations that are trying to promote a common initiative under the title 'Historical Anthropology'. Focus of interest is the diversity and inconsistency of the ways people adapting the world. The approaches to this problem are very different. Therefore, Historical Anthropology does not stand for a closed concept with respect to contents and methodology. But because of the central issue of essential human existence and elementary situations a new interesting perspective to the phenomena of the rapid social change is given, which occurs since the middle of this century.

Decisions in the context of Climate Engineering (CE), the deliberate large-scale manipulation of the Earth's climate, are decisions made under uncertainty. CE options are associated with a broad range of environmental and societal risks that raise complex questions: How can the risks be assessed and evaluated when balanced against the risks of alternative strategies to counteract climate change? What are the strategic implications for climate politics against the background of insufficient scientific knowledge? Can we estimate the ethical implications of the risks involved for society? Uncertainties and risks represent a central aspect of the issue but cannot be reduced to the traditional technical orientation of risk terminologies. The article elaborates on the specific characteristics of the risks and uncertainties associated with CE technology from six different disciplinary viewpoints. It thereby seeks to reveal chances for a mutual enrichment of these individual viewpoints since each discipline experiences boundaries while examining the complex risks of CE. In this way, the article redefines disciplinary boundaries without entirely dissolving them and without disregarding the valuable contribution every individual viewpoint can make. This aim is realized by means of the identification of new approaches to central questions regarding the risks and uncertainties involved in CE that can only be addressed from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Vom 14. bis 15. Januar 2016 findet in Kassel eine Konferenz zum Thema "Beyond the Master's Tools: Post- and Decolonial Approaches to Research Methodology and Methods in the Social Sciences" statt. Veranstaltet wird die Konferenz von den Fachbereichen Postkoloniale Studien und Soziologie der Diversität der Universität Kassel.

Die Forderung nach Open Access, d.h. dem freien Zugang zu Artikeln in referierten wissenschaftlichen Fachzeitschriften, hat mit der Budapest Open Access Initiative, den Zeitschriften der Public Library of Science und der "Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities" die Fachwissenschaften, aber auch eine breitere nicht-wissenschaftliche Öffentlichkeit zu erreichen begonnen. Im Kern geht es um die Frage, ob wissenschaftliche Informationen als in der Regel durch öffentliche Mittel subventionierte Ergebnisse der Wissensproduktion und daher als Gemeinschaftsgut – ähnlich wie Gesetze und Urteile – für alle Interessierten ohne Nutzungsentgelte zugänglich sein sollten. Hier trifft sich die Open Access-Bewegung mit Initiativen gegen den Digital Divide, die digitale Kluft, und auch aus diesem Grunde haben Forderungen nach Open Access mittlerweile in politische Manifeste Eingang gefunden, so u.a. in die "WSIS Declaration of Principles" und in den "WSIS Plan of Action". In dem Beitrag wird zunächst kurz entlang eines historischen Abrisses über Inhalte und Ziele der Open Access-Bewegung informiert (Abschnitt 2). Danach wird an einigen Beispielen demonstriert, in welcher Weise die Open Access-Bewegung und Initiativen gegen den Digital Divide konvergieren (Abschnitt 3). Anschließend werden in Abschnitt 4 einige Barrieren diskutiert, die bisher verhindern, dass Open Access breit in der wissenschaftlichen Veröffentlichungspraxis verankert wäre. Abschnitt 5 skizziert hiervon ausgehend einige derzeit diskutierte Szenarien der Umverteilung zwischen "information poor" und "information rich". Hier besteht trotz der Brisanz und Reichweite der Open Access-Bewegung weiter dringender Informations- und Handlungsbedarf – insbesondere auch für die deutschen Fachwissenschaften –, sich mit dem Konzept und der Praxis des Open Access-Publizierens vertraut zu machen. Although the long reign of Emperor Justinian I (527-565 CE) and the military history of late antiquity have been frequent subjects of ancient historical research, the emperor's military policy has not been closely studied until now. This study contributes to our understanding the specific course of decision-making and the intentions of imperial activity in the military sector.

Salomon Neumann (1819-1908) is one of the outstanding representatives of 19th century social medicine. As a medical reformer, statistician and city councilor, he made a significant contribution to improving social and hygienic conditions in Berlin. His most famous work was published in 1847 under the title "Die oeffentliche Gesundheitspflege und das Eigenthum" [Public Health and Property]. From 1859 to 1905, Neumann was active in the Berlin City Council for the improvement of the living conditions of the population. He was involved in the construction of municipal hospitals, supported the modernisation of sewage disposal, organised the Berlin censuses of 1861 and 1864 and was active in the field of health and social statistics. Not only was Neumann exposed to anti-Semitic reprisals during his lifetime, a foundation he founded to promote the science of Judaism was dissolved by the National Socialists in 1940. On the occasion of his 200th birthday, this article commemorates the life and work of the democratically minded and socially committed doctor and health politician. Salomon Neumann has rendered great services to social medicine in Germany. ; Salomon Neumann (1819-1908) zählt zu den herausragenden Vertretern der Sozialmedizin des 19. Jahrhunderts. The article sketches the evolution of mathematical social sciences in Great Britain, focussing on Political Economy and Social Statistics. The formal methods which were later to become of greatest importance in these sciences (differential calculus and probability theory) were mainly imported from continental mathematics at the beginning of the 19th century. The emergence of Political Economy and the transformation of classical Political Arithmetic into Statistics roughly coincided with this "catching-up" process. Moreover, the "Cambridge Network of Scientists" (Cannon), with its protagonists Whewell, Herschel, Babbage and Peacock, played a central role in the adoption of French mathematics as well as in the early attempts to place the social sciences on a methodologically sound basis. Not surprisingly, the Cambridge Scientists (gathered mainly in the Cambridge Philosophical Society and the Cambridge Astronomical Society) were among the first to use mathematical methods in dealing with "the complicated conduct of our social and moral relations" (Herschel). However, the mathematicization of the social sciences cannot be seen as a smooth, continuous process of successively applying formal techniques to social phenomena. The application of the general equilibrium framework of analytical mechanics to the study of man's desires and actions, and the use of probability theory in explaining (not just describing) the synthesis and development of social aggregates, required an essential precondition: a new kind of analysis of "man", such as had emerged in geology and physiology since the late 1830s. Using the principles of natural selection and reflex action, it became possible to view human societies simultaneously as random samples and systems of forces, to which mathematical techniques now became reasonably applicable. The rise of Economics and Eugenics (founded by Jevons and Galton, respectively) towards the end of the 19th century can thus be perceived as a late consequence of this "anthropological turn". Die derzeitigen währungs- und finanzpolitischen Schwierigkeiten überlagern die seit der europäischen Integration bestehenden Defizite einer gemeinsamen europäischen Identität. Es scheint, dass zwei-hundert von Nationalstaaten geprägte Jahre unter Betonung nationaler Besonderheiten rund 1.800 Jahre vergessen gemacht haben, die von einer weltweit einzigartigen wechselseitigen Befruchtung in Politik, Wissenschaft, Kunst und Kultur geprägt gewesen sind: einem gemeinsamen kulturellen Erbe in Europa. Insbesondere die Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften erforschen, dokumentieren und bewahren dieses Erbe. Dabei spielen die Wissenschaftsakademien Europas eine herausragende Rolle. Ein pan-europäisches Forschungsprogramm zu kulturellem Erbe und kultureller Identität in Europa gibt es allerdings nicht. Die Wissenschaftsakademien sind - im Gegensatz zu der sonstigen geistes- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschungslandschaft Europas - bislang noch weitgehend terra incognita. Dieses Buch analysiert die Ergebnisse der ersten umfassenden Um-frage über geistes- und sozialwissenschaftliche Grundlagenforschung an den Wissenschaftsakademien, Gelehrtengesellschaften und ähnlichen Forschungseinrichtungen Europas. It is for the humanities and social sciences (SSH) to research, document and preserve this heritage, where the European science academies play a major role. However, a pan-European research programme on European cultural heritage and identity is still lacking, and, in comparison to the rest of the European SSH research landscape, the science academies are terra incognita. This book provides an analytical report of the first survey of basic research in the SSH conducted by the European scientific academies and related research organisations. It not only provides greatly needed information about this important area of the European research landscape, but also investigates the potential for a pan-European academies' research programme in the SSH (including a corresponding digital infrastructure) that could strengthen the integration of European research into cultural heritage and identity. Interdisziplinarität markiert ein Forschungsprogramm, das unterschiedliche Konjunkturen erlebt hat. Auch wenn es aktuell wieder an Zuspruch gewinnt, bleiben oftmals die Konturen der Vorstellung von Interdisziplinarität verschwommen. Wenn eine Forschungsgruppe dezidiert die interdisziplinäre Perspektive aufgreift, ist es daher zwingend geboten, sich über den Begriff und seine Implikationen zu verständigen. Darauf aufbauend zeigen wir, wie sich die DFG-Forschungsgruppe 2757 interdisziplinär aufstellt und vernetzt, um eine komplexe Fragestellung zu klären, die durch Einzelforschung nicht befriedigend behandelt werden kann. Dazu erläutern wir zunächst die in interdisziplinärer Reflexion gewonnenen und ausgewählten begrifflichen Grundlagen, Theorien und Methoden und präsentieren die entsprechenden Grundideen unserer Forschungsgruppe. Auf dieser Basis beschreiben wir deren organisatorische Tektonik sowie die inhaltlichen und methodischen Verbindungen der einzelnen Teilprojekte. Somit präzisieren wir unsere Vorstellung von interdisziplinärer Zusammenarbeit im Sinne einer vernetzten Forschung. Wir erarbeiten mit unserem Vorgehen in interdisziplinärer Hinsicht einen angemessenen Zugang zur Thematik, der es erlaubt, die grundlegenden Fragen aus unterschiedlichen epistemologischen Perspektiven zu beleuchten und damit umfassender zu erfassen, als es aus einer rein disziplinären Sicht möglich wäre. Weiterhin streben wir eine Erweiterung und Vertiefung unseres methodischen Vorgehens an, indem verschiedene fachspezifische Methoden verwendet und kombiniert werden. Auf dieser Grundlage versprechen wir uns innovative Ergebnisse, die theoretische und methodologische Aspekte betreffen. ; Interdisciplinarity has experienced cyclical fluctuations. Even though it is currently gaining popularity again, the contours of the notion of interdisciplinarity often remain blurred. For a Research Unit that is adopting an interdisciplinary perspective it is therefore imperative to reach a consensus regarding the underlying concept and its implications. We therefore explain how the interdisciplinary setup and interconnectedness of the DFG Research Unit 2757 contribute to approaching a complex research agenda that lies beyond the scope of individual disciplines. To this end, we first elucidate the fundamental terms, theories and methods, developed and selected through interdisciplinary reflection, and present the basic ideas of our Research Unit. Furthermore, we describe the organizational structure and explain how the subprojects are connected both in terms of content and methodology. This allows us to more precisely define our understanding of interdisciplinary cooperation in the sense of networked research. We are thus aiming at an adequate interdisciplinary approach to our subject matter that allows us to shed light on the fundamental questions from different epistemological perspectives and thereby grasp them more comprehensively than would be possible from a purely disciplinary vantage point. Furthermore, we aspire to broaden and deepen our methodology by implementing and combining different subject-specific approaches. We thereby aim to achieve innovative results regarding theoretical and methodological aspects.

Wir bringen zwei neue Beiträge in die FQS-Debatte zu "Erfolgreich Sozialwissenschaft betreiben .": (1.) Einen theoretischen Text, der ein Schweige-Gebot für die sozialen Hintergründe und Interna in der sozialwissenschaftlichen Subkultur aufstellt, (2.) eine (literarische) Einzelfall-Geschichte einer Promotion im universitären Dickicht. Die beiden Beiträge sind Ausdruck sehr unterschiedlicher Blickweisen auf das sozialwissenschaftliche Milieu. The first text focuses on a theoretical issue, proposing a law of silence concerning the social background and internal processes in the subculture of the social sciences. The second text presents a literary case study of a dissertation in the thickets of university politics. The two contributions are an expression of very different perspectives onto the milieu of social science. They exemplify our, the moderators' intention to illuminate this (small) social-scientific world from different points of view and to take advantage of it for constructing a more systematic and deeper understanding of the social construction of social-scientific knowledge. Die Dissertation untersucht am Beispiel mikrohistorischer Fallstudien die Forschung des remigrierten Instituts für Sozialforschung in Frankfurt am Main unter der Leitung Max Horkheimers und Theodor W. Adornos. Deren empirische Sozialforschung war in Institutionen der frühen Bundesrepublik gefragt, weil die Forscher durch die Studien zur Autoritären Persönlichkeit den Ruf als Experten der Demokratie erworben hatten. Die Forschungsdisziplinen, in denen das Frankfurter Institut seine Expertise entfaltete, reichten von den Feldern der Militärsoziologie über die Sozialpsychologie, über dass Feld der Politischen Bildung bis hin zur Industrie- und Betriebssoziologie. Für das Amt Blank, das Bundesverteidigungsministerium, das Bundesministerium für Arbeit, die Bundeszentrale für Heimatdienst und den Mannesmannkonzern untersuchte das Frankfurter Institut die Akzeptanz demokratischer Institutionen und das demokratische Bewusstsein der Deutschen. Dabei konnte es an Studien der alliierten Besatzungsorgane anschließen, entwickelte aber deren Untersuchungsmethoden durch die Etablierung qualitativer Erhebungsverfahren wie das Gruppendiskussionsverfahren entscheidend weiter. Die Dissertation kommt zum Ergebnis, dass kritische Sozialforschung in der frühen Bundesrepublik nachgefragt wurde, dass aber durch vielfältige Konflikte und Widerstände von etablierten Wissenschaftlern, deren Karrieren zu einem guten Teil im Nationalsozialismus begonnen hatte, aber auch mit den untersuchten Eliten, Verbänden und im industriellen Großkonzern eine breiteren Rezeption verhindert wurde. ; The dissertation consists of several microhistorical case-studies analyzing the research conducted by the Frankfort Institute for Social Research directed by Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno, after the institute's return to post-war Germany. Empirical social research was in high demand during the first years after the war, and the Frankfort scholars, having developed the theory of the Authoritarian Personality, were considered experts on democracy. The Frankfort Institute conducted research in the areas of military sociology, social psychology, political education and in industrial sociology. For several institutions, for instance the Blank Office, the Federal Ministry of Defense, the Federal Ministry of Labour and the Mannesmann Steel Company, the Institute researched the German population's democratic awareness and its acceptance of democratic institutions. The Frankfort scholars" research was similar to public opinion polls conducted by the allied forces in the after-war period, but they developed new methods of qualitative social research, for example the focus group method. The dissertation concludes that critical social research caused resistance and resentment among the scientific establishment in Germany, especially when it came to academic and applied psychologists who had begun their career in the national socialist era, but the same holds true among other elites, organizations like the Association of Homecoming Veterans and in industrial companies. Because of this, the Institute's work didn't have the impact on German society and science it could have had without the resistance it met with.
