The welfare states that were created after World War II are under pressure. The contributions of Judith van der Veer and Romke van der Veen both authors outline how the Netherlands is looking for new ways out to ensure the level of care of its citizens. Thus Netherlands is under the spell of the 'activating welfare state'. In Flanders makes similar analyzes can be found in recent policy documents the 'socialization of care 'as its central theme. But while a clear choice in the Netherlands to build from the local level, activating welfare of Flanders is holding onto a centralist and compartmentalised development of care and support. This leads to compartmentalized petrifaction, wasteful and bureaucratic chilly detachment. Adapted from the source document.

This study reports the results of qualitative interviews with 28 extreme right wing activists in Flanders (Belgium). We focus on the (ideological) motives for activism (why did they become active?) & the trajectory followed in becoming active (how did they become active?). The results show that these activists are primarily motivated by ethnic nationalism. All other ideological stands (e.g., rejection of foreigners, authoritarian attitudes & rejection of actual politics in Belgium) seem to be derived from this core of ethnic nationalism. The trajectory followed is primarily one that relates to socialization & continuity: most interviewees grew up in a family in which nationalism was of primordial importance. A minority of respondents, however, followed trajectories that refer to compliance or to conversion (deprivation). Adapted from the source document.

Interview data are drawn on to compare levels of political alienation among 206 German & 236 Belgian higher civil servants. Analysis shows that early academic & political socialization matters little, except for the ideological & general cultures. Belgians are less egalitarian, more materialistic, & more politically alienated, & their participation in policy formulation is lower. The high degree of technocratism among the Belgians, leading to disrespect for politicians, is yet to be considered. 17 Tables. Adapted from the source document.

The development of a sense of national belonging is problematic in a sociopolitical environment where children are confronted with multiple national identities. Analysis of survey data obtained from a sample of 1,000 Flemish secondary school pupils, ages 17-18, reveals that most Flemish respondents hesitated between claiming a Flemish vs Belgian identity. It is suggested that this lack of a single evident fatherland results in an absence of genuine patriotism. Also, identification with the local community takes precedence over allegiance to the nation. The political socialization process apparently does not effect an emotional attachment to either the Flemish or the Belgian political system. 10 Tables, 3 Graphs. Modified HA
