Italian sociol'ts of the late 19th cent have described the Maffia above all as a soc plague. This has limited the study of a phenomena. The Maffia is certainly related to the lingering traces of feudalism which characterize Sicily (thus explaining, for example, the recourse to extralegal violence). But its vigor in the second half of the 19th cent must be attributed principally to the alliance of the new landed bourgeoisie, enriched by the purchase of noble & Church properties, with the traditional aristocracy. The Maffia, recruited from peasant circles, serves to defend this dominating class by retarding the formation of a middling peasantry. The exploitation by the 'mafiosi' of both the large land owners & the peasants is extremely profitable, permitting some of them to enter the ranks of the bourgeoisie. This soc role added to the control of the administration explains the strong position of the Maffia in Sicily. IPSA.

On December 16, 2004, a debate on "Law & Political Science. Reality & Perspectives", followed the closing of the Day of "Il Politico" on the future of Europe. The initiative was prompted by the recent publications of writings by Bruno Leone, Raffaele De Mucci, Lorenzo Infantino, Antonio Masala & Angelo Panebianco. The day started out with the introduction by Pasquale Scaramozzino, director of "Il Politico", followed by a round table joined by Raimondo Cubeddu, Mauro Barberis, Carlo Lottieri, Antonio Masala, Giorgio Fedel & Angelo Panebianco. This article is a synthesis of their participation. References. M. Schroeder

European integration (as well as other instances of the shifting of power from the nation-state to supranational levels) has raised hopes & concerns for its effect on power distribution among different actors, in particular, on the presence & role of the civil society. Focusing on the Europeanization of political mobilization & communication, this article addresses the specific problem of the formation of supranational public spheres. Looking in particular at the Italian mass media, on the basis of a systematic coverage of four daily newspapers, 1990-2002, & semi-structured interviews, the authors argue that various forms of Europeanization of the public sphere are indeed on the rise, with a growing presence of not only purely European actors, but also European targets & frames. Comparing the presence of institutional & non-institutional actors, Europeanization appears to have been in the public sphere traditionally a "top-down" process: in fact, the more Europeanized a policy, an actor, a target or an issue scope is, the less civil society actors seem to have access to the public sphere. However, some changes across time emerge, with the development of (contentious) forms of "Europeanization from below.". 5 Tables, 1 Figure, 1 Appendix, 62 References.
