A series of wars over the last decade have produced complex emergencies that have led to various combinations of genocide, famine, destruction of infrastructure, enforced displacement of populations and regional destabilisation. There are now violent situations in around 30 countries, which produce over a thousand victims per year in battles over political power or territory. The leading actors in these conflicts are very often corrupt and repressive States and non-state armed groups. These wars are part of, and instrumental to, illegal economies based on resources such as diamonds, oil, timber, and on illicit trades of weapons and drugs. ; Peer reviewed
This article focuses on the ways of generation of media discourse about management and labor organizations. This discourse plays a central role in the social construction of organizational criteria and practices as well as the definition of work health indicators for all the implicated social groups in the labor phenomenon. His common justification is the intention of educating and spreading mass knowledge. Both are conducting to produce a high homogenous view about how to do with persons in organizations. Our analysis uncovers a fundamental interpretative repertory: systemic conceptualization of organizations and the implications for the persons at work subjectivity in a time defined for a erased labor class. This article focuses on the ways in which work and management are discursively represented in the media. Media discourse plays an important part in the social construction, by various interested parties, of well-being at work. The basic rationale of the discourse is, it claims, educational. That leads, we argue, to a very undifferentiated understanding of how personnel should be managed. We identify a pervasive interpretative repertoire: the systematic view of organizations, and its implications for the subjectivity of employees, in an era defined by the diminishing certainty of working class identity in contemporary social structure.
At least three paradoxes return to the life of Juan Pablo Il, the media phenomenon of the century. It is not easy to take an objective account of his role in religion, politics and communications, in the form of a universal and unanimous tribute of such proportions that the speaker of 'papolatría' has not been missed. The first paradox surrounding Juan Pablo II is located between the reach of the message and its effectiveness. A multitude of biblic proportions became visible in Rome when Pope's death. 'The largest funeral in history' titled Ecuador's newspaper El Comercio, coinciding with many headlines around the world. 2 million pilgrims and 5 000 journalists arrived in Rome from all parts of the world. But this was only the logical end of a 26-year trajectory. There has been no figure in history that has fascinated so much the crowds of all breeds and ages. No one has therefore been in force. "His fourth hour of glory lasted a quarter of a century", said French journalist Gérard Dupuy. However, and here is the paradox, your message was not as successful as his presence. The crowds he received did not put his lessons into practice. They received the messenger but not the message.
Goat ranches in the west area of La Pampa Province (Argentina) are analyzed by mean of surveys. These are long tradition family enterprises (2.5 man equivalent) with owners (average 53.3 years old) that believe in the continuity of their farms. The educational level is very low (about 80 percent are real or functional illiterates), although 46 percent of their inheritors had completed the primary school and 15 percent had completed the high school. Technical assistance is received mainly from governmental programs. Kids are the main sale product and about 18 percent of them are used for family feeding. Other source of income would be increased adding value by mean of handmade manufacture (cheese, hair, spinning, tan leather, etc.)
; The author analyses, from the point of view of Political Economy, the consequences in political life due to the major transformations produced in cultural industry and communication areas. His work is displayed in three steps. He outlines firstly the troublesome relationship between communications and democracy. Afterwards, he precises the features of his own perspective. Finally he focuses his work on the mutations in public sphere. He proposes giving up the spatial metaphor and the idealistic rationalism, and seeks to identify the trends which dominate the public-private reconfiguration in the so-called information societies.
presents the difficult and problematic but at the same time encouraging the reality of the community media and alternative media in terms of their sustainability, the latter being understood in the context of the balance between social sustainability, institutional sustainability and economic sustainability. The work stresses that the analysis of the maintenance of these means cannot, under any circumstances, be reduced to a mere analysis of economic phenomena, and that such communication cannot exist unless it is based on the social dynamics in which it takes place, without the involvement of social actors, without the legitimacy of the Community political project and without ownership of the communication process itself; the importance of maintaining resources in a challenging, globalising and hegemonic global context lies in these aspects and others (which are more interesting).
This research is mainly focused on rethinking the concept of public opinion that has managed to break into the social sciences since the eighties of the twentieth century, reinforced by the presence and influence of the mass media and institutions responsible for developing opinion surveys, rescuing the concept of public opinion that occurred in the eighteenth century and under which the necessary changes deployed demanded by European societies. This vision of public opinion formulated by Jürgen Habermas, is the guiding thread to generate critical thinking and put in its proper dimension a concept that in the contemporary world has been diluted by the irruption of new actors, media, especially assume an uncritical attitude in current history plagued by major social problems.
; The author analyzes the development of the feelings of common identity and its consequences in the cities of Castile. The causes of its development were: the possession of an own juridical statute, the enjoyment of privileges, the economic common interests, the development of the collective dominion and the symbolic elements; although, the bases of the common identity were not the same for all the inhabitants. The urban oligarchies used it to justify their government, whereas the rest of neighbours used it to support their claims.

This work is an approach to the fundamental elements on which it turns the specially French sociological current known as sociology of the imaginary thing. In the first place, it fixes his attention on the analysis of those theoretical traditions that have contributed to develop this current, the anthropological-sociological thought of Gilbert Dürand and the durkheimian contributions of the French sociological School. Next, it raises the sociological relevance of the notion of imaginary like a new approach to the understanding of the social reality, synthetically detachhing the essential directives on which this current weighs affecting five aspects: the persistence of the myth and the asylum, the implication of the imaginary thing in the routine character, the interpretation of the daily life, the attachment between imaginary and the politician and the imaginary foundation of the utopia.

The aim of this paper is to try & find an answer to the question of why the Internet is such an attractive medium, via an examination of the promises it offers. One of the most popular promises is that of creating virtual communities, something which has grown from more than sixty years of development of various technical programs, experiences & community projects such as the first, limited communities of computer experts Arpanet & Usenet, the popular BBs & more recently, the various more or less successful - community projects proliferating on the Internet. First, I will present a short historical survey of some of the discourses of the first designers & users, in order to try to present the context from which these promises have emerged. Second, I have attempted to relate these expectations to the emblematic text of Rheingold on VC which covers the most popular experiences of CVs the USA during the 80s. My aim is to identify, via examples (this is not a detailed study) some of the aspects of this promise which are present in varying degrees in the current virtual communities.
There is significant literature in the social sciences about the Internet. A lot of it is dedicated to understanding interaction in virtual spaces like forums, chats, etc. Such analyses represent two different approaches. In the first approach, authors are concerned to clarify the limitations that virtual spaces put on interactional phenomena. In these cases the object of study is always face-to-face interaction. The second approach is to treat virtual spaces as a new field of interaction, an independent dimension for interaction phenomena. Our work runs follows this latter approach & offers a critique against the first position. The analysis uses part of the results obtained in a virtual ethnography. We report an examination of the development of interactive sequences in a specific virtual space: a forum of Estudis d'Humanitats i Filologia in Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (a virtual university).
