Public sociology refers to the application and uses of sociology beyond the academy. The term has been used very broadly to describe any sociological theory, methods, research findings, or commentary by sociologists that are consumed (and, ideally, used) by non-sociologists. Its central aim is "to correct - that is, to make better, social conditions for the betterment of humanity" (Hanemaayer and Schneider 2014: 5). Public sociology has also been referred to more specifically as an approach sociologists use to participate in public discussions about social issues as "public intellectuals" (Burawoy 2005). This chapter focuses on public sociology in its broadest definition, as the sharing of sociological lessons with publics beyond sociologists, and includes a range of activities from publishing opinion pieces to daily work .in government, organizations, court rooms, classrooms, and communities around the world. Because many of the published works about public sociology are in response to the US-based Burawoy and the ASA, this chapter privileges the North American context.

[About the book] "The Uses of Sociology" discusses whether sociological knowledge is important. It introduces students to the main ways in which sociology is practised in the world and explores the major debates concerning its social purposes. Comparing and contrasting different traditions of sociological thought, the authors examine the different modes in which they engage with the social. Questions considered include the relevance of sociological knowledge to government, the public sphere, the media, economic life, social movements, 'race' and ethnicity. The text also discusses related issues, such as whether sociology is a science or a cultural endeavour, and whether sociological research and analysis can be detached and unbiased.

Die Debatte um eine public sociology zieht bislang nicht in Betracht, dass Soziologisieren in den verschiedenen medialen, alltäglichen und lokalen Öffentlichkeiten bereits weit verbreitet ist. Der Beitrag nimmt dieses allgemeine öffentliche Soziologisieren zum Ausgangspunkt, um die Rolle einer public sociology neu zu bestimmen. Dazu werden an zwei Fallbeispielen zugleich Einsatzmöglichkeiten vorgestellt und Grundzüge herausgearbeitet: Im ersten Beispiel bemüht sich public sociology darum, am Fall des Rücktritts von Horst Köhler zu verdeutlichen, auf welche Weise und mit welchen Folgen in den öffentlichen Diskussionen und Interpretationen dieses Vorgangs qualitative soziologische Analysemethoden zum Einsatz kommen. Im zweiten Beispiel für public sociology stellen wir mit der liveSoziologie ein von uns entwickeltes experimentelles Format vor, das fachliche und allgemeine Modi des Soziologisierens mobilisiert und miteinander in Kontakt bringt: Politische Zusammenkünfte werden teilnehmend und in Echtzeit für ein ko-präsentes und/oder medial zugeschaltetes Publikum soziologisch besprochen. The debates on public sociology do not account for doing sociology already in existence in public and workaday life. In order to capture the distinct role of public sociology, the article uses these common and public doings as point of departure. It refers to two case studies in order to define public sociology's key features: In the first example public sociology clarifies how sociological methods were publicly used in the debates on Horst Köhler's resignation. Accordingly some of the consequences of this doing sociology are pointed out. In the second example of public sociology a new experimental format called liveSociology is introduced. It seeks to mobilize and utilize academic as well as common sociological practices. Political gatherings and manifestations are commented on in real time by sociologists addressing an audience co-present as events are unfolding and/or connected via radio. Summing up, in light of these two examples, public sociology is understood to call for reflexively relating academic and common forms of doing sociology.

In this article I consider the impact of social epistemologies for understanding the object of the syringe. My aim is to examine the process through which the syringe transforms from an injecting device to a tool of social and political inquiry. Paying particular attention to the uses of Foucault, Becker, Bourdieu, Freud and Latour in empirical studies of injecting heroin use, I examine the sociology of the syringe through the lens of habit and habitus, discourse and deviance, mourning and melancholia, attachment and agencement. In pursuing the theory behind the object my goal is to address a sociological object in the making. In so doing I show how the syringe has been significant for social research, social theory, and sociology. It is the difference the object makes that this article seeks to describe. In tracing the epistemology of the syringe I show how the object is important not just for knowledge of addiction but sociology itself.

International audience ; This article aims at giving an overview about the four main collections of problems and studies that have structured over the last four decades what could be called the French school of rural sociology: from the rural exodus to the "rural renaissance"; the question of social change and innovation in agriculture; the working conditions, living conditions, professions in agriculture, and the alternative initiatives and paths away from productivism; politics and organisations in agriculture. In the last section, perspectives to understand splintering and coexistence of new forms of production organisation and agricultural trade in a context of globalisation are formulated.

How can sociologists observe a war "in the making"? In issuing an "instant call for papers," the editors of Sociologica suggest three lines of research: the semantics and the symbolic representation of war (of any war, but especially of this war); how political, military, economic, and social options and alternatives enter and exit the realm of the possible in connection with shifts in war semantics; how our understanding of "the day after," that is of the future after the war is over, binds and even determines decisions in the present.

The rapid science in the modern era, provides significant changes for humans, both in the fields of economics, politics, culture, environment, society, education, and even religion. The 19th century is a century of science that is growing rapidly, this can be seen from the emergence of various scientists who provide concepts, theories based on philosophy with basic ontology, epistemology, and axiology as a contribution to the development of science. One of them, the scientist known as the father of sociology, was Auguste Comte a scientist from France. Comte is famous for its philosophy of postivism because of the many references by scientists in the contemporary era. This is based on the calculation of the success of designing the social structure of modern humans with three stages of law, but one side of the theory he produced has eliminated the fundamental value in humans, namely eliminating the metaphysical basis. In a three-stage law, more concerned with physical values than metaphysical values, this will result in a society that abandons religion and even eliminates the existence of God. The thoughts produced by Comte are thoughts originating from the west, where the basic West is relativism so if viewed from an Islamic point of view this theory will produce atheists and eliminate the sanctity of religion. In Islam religion and society are inseparable because religion is a guideline that is used as a basis in people's lives based on the values of the Qur'an and Sunnah. Therefore in this paper we will study more deeply the criticisms of Aguste Comte's thinking, using qualitative research types, with descriptive analysis methods and theological philosophical approaches.

While sociology has historically not been a good interlocutor of war, this paper argues that the body has always known war, and that it is to the corporeal that we can turn in an attempt to develop a language to better speak of its myriad violences and its socially generative force. It argues that war is a crucible of social change that is prosecuted, lived and reproduced via the occupation and transformation of myriad bodies in numerous ways from exhilaration to mutilation. War and militarism need to be traced and analysed in terms of their fundamental, diverse and often brutal modes of embodied experience and apprehension. This paper thus invites sociology to extend its imaginative horizon to rethink the crucial and enduring social institution of war as a broad array of fundamentally embodied experiences, practices and regimes.
