Usage of European Integration - Europeanisation from a Sociological Perspective
The effect of European integration on its member states constitutes the new research agenda within the study of European integration. Marked by the "the institutionalist turn" of Anglo-Saxon political sciences, the most dominant theories on europeanisation focus on structural arrangements. Institutional incompatibility between the European and the national level, so the hypothesis, creates pressures for change. Actors are often only considered as mediators of these pressures. Consequentially, few approaches try to explain adaptational change initiated by policy actors in the absence of institutional pressures. Using a political sociology approach, the central concern of this paper is to insist on the political discretion of national actors in translation of European requirements. We believe that understanding not only "adaptation to" but also "usage of" the process of European integration is important to understanding the transformation of European member states. By insisting on usage, we aim at analysing both the strategic interaction of rational actors with the European institutions and the more sociological effect of "usage" - as "daily practice" - on the interest and identities of the actors.

Między odrzuceniem religii a zbawianiem świata: itineraria socjologii i postsekularnej teorii społecznej
In: Stan rzeczy: S Rz ; teoria społeczna, Europa Środkowo-Wschodnia ; półrocznik, Heft 2(5), S. 13-29
Ułatwia to nieustanny dyskurs niejednoznaczności.
Cosmopolitical groups of urban refugees in Central Africa: between human rights and city-right ; Collectifs cosmopolitiques de réfugiés urbains en Afrique centrale : entre droits de l'homme et droit de cité
A theoretical posture at the interface of political sociology and urban sociology is used to analyse the collective actions of urban refugees in Central Africa, focusing on the work of framing and adjusting mobilisations to the overall humanitarian environment in which they seek to integrate. In a context marked by a political decline at State level of the issue of assistance to refugees and the emergence of the international human rights regime as a central normative production framework in the host countries of Central Africa, it is then necessary to identify the conditions for the emergence of 'collective cosmopolitics' of refugees and their ability to call into question the relationship between human rights and citizens' rights in urban areas where the boundaries between international and internal order have never been so porous and undefined. ; International audience From a theoretical vantage point at the interface between political and urban sociology, this study analyzes collective action by urban refugees in Central Africa, focusing on efforts to adjust and adapt collective action to the global humanitarian environment in which it seeks to be embedded. In a context marked by political withdrawal at State level from refugee assistance issues and by the emergence of an international human rights regime as the principal normative framework in Central African host countries, we seek to identify the preconditions for the growth of "cosmopolitical collectives" of refugees. Further, we point up their propensity to call into question the relationship between human rights and the rights of citizens in urban areas where the boundaries between the international and domestic order have never before been as porous and undefined. ; A theoretical posture at the interface of political sociology and urban sociology is used to analyse the collective actions of urban refugees in Central Africa, focusing on the work of framing and adjusting mobilisations to the overall humanitarian environment in which they seek to ...

Influence of Internet on re-definition of public sphere
The article is focused on the fact how Internet's popularization affected the definition of the public sphere. In the first part classical concepts of this issue - Hannah Arendt's, Bruce Ackerman's and Jürgen Habermas' - have been presented. In the next part classical visions of the public sphere have been reinterpreted, based on the examples of present civil engagement. It has been defined which of their constitutive elements seem to be still valid and which have lost their significance as a result of the development of Internet. ; Arendt H.: Kondycja Ludzka, Fundacja Aletheia, Warszawa 2000, ; Armbruster J.: Arabska wiosna. ISO standards belong to the field of soft law and are binding as voluntary standards. The article proposes a political sociology for their construction and implementation. It is therefore necessary to identify the regulatory plasticity of ISO standards: these texts, which are incorporated in a continuum of legislation, allow for multiple catches and broad interpretations. Policy across borders: the political sociology of emigration ; La politique au-delà des frontières : la sociologie politique de l'émigration
This article aims to develop a framework for analysing the political sociology of emigration. The article focuses on the dual nature of the migration phenomenon: immigrants are also emigrants, foreigners in the legal sense are also citizens, foreigners in the social sense are also nationals, the exclusion from receiving societies are also members of the societies of origin. Of the issuing company, but no longer in this society, migrants are members whose cross-border connections and adaptation needs lead the issuing state to expand across borders; however, living abroad weakens their claims to belong. In the receiving society, but not in that society, they have access to economic and political resources that enable them to exercise influence at home; on the other hand, as foreigners, their rights are limited and their acceptance uncertain, a vulnerability which may increase when continued engagement with the country of origin gives rise to suspicion on the part of the nationals of the receiving State. This variety of conditions triggers interventions by issuing states seeking to protect and influence nationals residing abroad, but also to respond to the demands of these citizens outside the country and channel them in order to better recover them. However, the extension to the territory of a foreign country paves the way for the exercise of power, be it despotic or infrastructural, allowing only the exercise of influence. In addition, even limited commitments run the risk of igniting the passions of nationals, which are already concerned about the presence of a foreign population among them. ; This paper seeks to develop a framework for analyzing the political sociology of emigration. The paper emphasizes the dualities at the heart of the migration phenomenon: immigrants are also emigrants, aliens are also citizens, foreigners are also nationals, non-members are also members. At once of the sending state, but not in it, the migrants are members whose everyday cross-border connections and ongoing needs draw the ...

Forced sterilisation of indigenous men: an unexplored facet ; Esterilización forzada de hombres indígenas: una faceta inexplorada
Summary aims to explore the issue of forced sterilisation in the indigenous population, from the perspective of political sociology and in dialogue with medical anthropology, gender studies and human rights. Its methodology is based on a case study in which Mexican indigenous men were sterilised, and is complemented by a documentary review that allowed a theoretical comparative case to be built, starting with Peru, both of which were registered in the 1990s. The main finding is that forced sterilisation, although largely due to a policy of population control, in the particular case of the indigenous population, is also linked to the militarisation involved in the counter-insurgent struggle from the State to the guerrilla activity that characterised Latin America in the years.

What is the European identity? ; Quelle identité européenne ?
for political sociology, the concept of identity covers a variety of meanings and approaches, if not contradictory. Political identities can be defined as stories that give everyone the opportunity to define themselves in relation to others and to characterise relations between them and a group. In a nation, the salient 'imaginaries' they convey — and who are repeatedly the subject of questions and reinterpretations — bring people closer together and are taught to them from childhood. Europe also has a narrative, carried out by the EU's institutional apparatus and pro-European elites, but these transnational stories will then be "naturalised" within the national frameworks, and they reach the general public little. While measures to assess identification with Europe are difficult to establish, Sophie Duchesne explains that there are large disparities between countries and social groups. There is also — in contrast to initial assumptions — a positive correlation between citizens' attachment to Europe and the strength of their national attachment.

Places and "Non-Places": The Identity of a Place in the Perspective of Individual Memory and Social Forgetting
The article deals with the issue of the identity of the place, taken in reference to the concept of places and non-places by Marc Augé. The main purpose of the theoretical analyses and analysis and interpretation of empirical results of the study was to determine the identity of the place (borderland) by referring to the individual memory of members of the minority group, inscribed in multifaceted, individual negotiations of experiencing the identity of the place. An important aspect discussed in the article are issues of social forgetting in Paul Connerton's approach and socio-cultural consequences of this process for the identity of the individual, group and place. Narrative interview was the main form of data collection. The analyses are oriented to the variable of the identity of the borderland. The categories of the analysis refer to: the cultural identity of the borderland; personal memories of respondents related to the events, situations related to the past of their family; social memory of the minority group; social memory of the majority group. Memory of the borderland is a memory strongly embedded in a given area and unequivocally localized – assigned to a place "marked" and "embedded" cul- turally. This, of course, implies a series of difficult group-based negotiations regarding the contents of memory, places, events that, from the perspective of internal diversity of the group, may construct contradictory images of the past of the place. ; jolamusz@uwb.edu.pl ; Faculty of Education, University of Białystok, Poland ; Assmann, J.
