Though 12 times the size of the resident European pop, the native pop has been dominated by the superior knowledge & skills of the colonists, who instituted a `dual instit'al structure' to maintain their dominant status. In a stratified random sample of Europeans, age 20+ years (N=500), a questionnaire testing att's re native customs & laws found that the R's wished to maintain the existing soc system. The study is further amplified by structural correlates of age, sex, income, & district of residence. However, these isolated att's do not fit the cultural norm as expressed in the inter-group relations - 'interacting individuals & the demands for collective action often require that individuals' att's be held in check.' It is concluded that pol'al 'structural pressures' are operating independent of the racist att, & that individuals' actions are not so much governed by their att's as by deliberately (& even 'non-deliberately') organized collectivities. A clear distinction must be made between studies on race relations & problems of inter-group relations. Relations between diff races in South African countries include the relationships between soc, econ, & pol'al factors, & indicate the need for further study in inter-group relations. In a summary analysis of res in the field, the problems between native & immigrant (largely European) groups are distinguished as (1) the use of race as a status symbol, (2) racial stratification, SM, & the role of the African elite in relation to modernization, (3) cultural diff's, (4) soc structure instability, (5) conflicting att's, & (6) native religious movements. A pop chart of the states & territories concerned is appended. P. D. Montagna.
