The social history of Russia in the last decade of the 20th century is closely related to the last stage in the development of Soviet society, the time of "perestroika". These periods have not been sufficiently studied in national historiography, especially such aspects as the daily life of people in a transition society, the social mobility of the population, and the life strategies of young people. The article discusses the influence of the new political and socio-economic realities of the turn of the 1990s on the professional self-determination of young people entering independent life at the time. The author suggests considering this issue with reference to boys and girls who chose to major in history, making every effort to enter the prestigious Faculty of History at Kuban State University at the end of the Soviet era. However, they gained a diploma of higher education in different social conditions, and they had to reconsider or radically change their professional plans. The research refers to the personal records of full-time graduates of the Department of History, Kuban State University for 1992 and 1993 and materials of 20 interviews with graduates held in 2018. The author compiles a collective "portrait" of a graduate of the full-time department of KubSU in 1992 and 1993 (applicant of 1987 and 1988). The author reveals the motivation underlying the choice they made in favour of the Faculty of History. It is established that for many people, the Faculty was attractive in terms of career growth in party organs and state administration (especially for Komsomol activists). Young people gradually realised the consequences of "restructuring" for their personal professional plans. In the unstable economic conditions of the transition to market economy, many graduates started their careers exercising the profession they had chosen (at schools, museums).
; The process of physical education formation in Western Siberia dates back to the 1920s. Massive involvement of various categories of citizens in the military and physical training necessitated relevant personnel training in the region. The main method of instructors' and organizers' training in Western Siberia in the 1920s and 1930s was training courses suitable to the educational level of the absolute majority of the staff. Expansion of sport work in the 1930s, due to economical and political reasons, demanded to increase the staff and the quality of their training. The capacity of the Physical Culture College that opened in Novosibirsk in 1930 did not meet the region's need in specialists of this qualification. The level of demand for physical education staff during the decade was very high. In 1933, some state steps were made to ensure a certain social welfare level of physical culture specialists, but they did not increase the number of the staff. In the 1930s, the professional level of physical education specialists was determined both by their knowledge and skills in the field of physical culture (introduction of categories) and by their ideological and political background. Higher ideological level of physical culture specialists was determined by the work of sport organisations done not only in the sphere of physical education, but also in the sphere of military and patriotic education of soviet citizens, and was actual and timely. Komsomol played an active role in the organisation of physical education among citizens, mainly in the countryside. Specialists of physical training in the countryside, with their deficit, had the lowest qualification level, while university professors had the highest one. However, the basis of full time university employees in the 1930s consisted of workers with special education, not higher than the secondary one. The deficit of sport workers in Western Siberia was due to the influence of state events, like turnover, employees' job change, "staff cleaning", etc., typical to that period of time. The frequent change of administration did not allow to carry out stable work in the region. From the beginning of the 1940s, trade union sport organisations, having reduced the administrative apparatus, relied on the work of freelancers. But the war began and delayed further reforms in the sphere of physical culture and sport unions restructuring. Despite some drawbacks in personnel policy, the employees of the sphere were able to organise mass training of the USSR citizens and to get them ready for the titanic work and defence of the state against the fascist occupation.
The article examines recent trends in state regulation of setting up youth organizations whose aims and activity would match the urgent issues of national development under the rising pressure of various threats and challenges. The authors also outline the issues that can complicate the progress of integration in youth movement. At the moment, a single mass youth organization akin to the Soviet-time Komsomol is impossible to set up. Similarly, a new federation of already existing youth organizations would be unpractical, as federative structure has long been a feature of Russia's youth movement.Given the new circumstances of Russia's internal and international situation, federal youth policy needs corrections which would prioritize patriotic education and preparedness to defend the nation and its moral, spiritual and cultural values both in the short and long run. This mandates an overall review of the practices of state support provided to children's and youth organizations — a task that requires the full power of available social resources. It must become a unified priority for various aspects of internal and external policy, and for Russia's educational system in the first place. In this light, the authors view the implementation prospects of Presidential Decree No. 536 of October 29, 2015 — a decree which mandates the creation of the "Russian Movement of School Students" — a federal public organization of children and youth.
; In article on basis of published and archival documents, research literature activity of party-state bodies on development of agricultural mechanical engineering in Rostov area within 8-th and 9-th five-year periods is considered. The article is based on the author's research of documents and materials of the UYA Board, conducted during his scholarly internship in the UK. The materials belong to the library of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain in London and the archives which exclusively store complete files of such periodicals as Holos Molodi, Avanhard, Ukrainska Dumka, and Vyzvolnyi Shliakh, which were also studied. In the ongoing scientific debate over the assumption whether the Ukrainian Youth Association was a project of the Soviet secret services formed to identify and eliminate the nationally conscious part of the Ukrainian society in the 1920s and early 1930s, or the hypothesis that it was backed up by real organizers and cases, the author belongs to the group of researchers that share the second point of view.Modus operandi of this organization was as follows: it was founded in Kyiv on the basis of the First Shevchenko Kyiv Labor School in late 1925 as an alternative to the Moscow organization of the Communist Komsomol. Mykola Pavlushkov became the founder and first head of UYA. In 1929, UYA was exposed by the punitive Soviet authorities as an "underground counterrevolutionary organization". ; The article analyzes current spiritual-political and socio-economic situation in postreform China with the emphasis on newest tendencies in the social feeling and conscience. Such a gigantic sociocultural laboratory as China, with the processes of modernization and archaization proper to it, gives much material disproving conceptions of unilinear historical progress and brining to light the Chinese particularity. The content of China elite identity and the reasons of its stability and continuity are analyzed on the basis of a profound excursus into history of the evolution of the «Confucians way of governance», that quite differs from the European model. In consequence of thousands years of selective breeding through the examination system and the stratagem mentality there was created, in the author's opinion, not the political culture, but some type of the specific Chinese administrative behavior mode, based on «the moral consensus» between different clans of elite, this time leaded by Xi Jinping, and composed by the «shanghai» and the «komsomol» factions. Contemporary partocracy regime of PRC inherited all the negative characteristics of soviet «nomenclature» such as hierarchy career based on loyalty, bureaucracy privileges, special rations and advantages, nepotism, corruption and so on, but has created specific Chinese system of «soft» succession of power from generation to generation. At the same time, the confluence of political and business elites is taking place and the state and society interests are more and more subordinated to their corporative Ames, that provoke so called «new leftist» movement against the irrational redistribution system. The CCP new leadership exploits the «Chinese dream» rhetoric and anticorruption assault to get the national consensus and conserve its monopoly on political power. However, the social-economic structures sophistication and the new social contradictions and conflicts intensification, the now days economic crisis evidences about, draw attention to the crucial importance of democratization and creation of the new nontraditional political system for up to date diagnosis, softening and salvation of such conflicts.
; Scientific problems of the present paper concern identifying the characteristics of the formation and evolution of the worldview of such a well-known figure in the modern history of Ukraine as Levko G. Lukyanenko in the context of socio-political life of Ukraine in the second half of the 20th — early 21st century. The authors identify four main stages of worldview evolution of this public figure: initial (from birth till 1950), Komsomol-party (1950—1957), human rights work (1957—1988), and politics (1988 till present day). In characterizing each stage authors identify the main factors that had a decisive influence on the formation and development of L. Lukyanenko's personality, and discuss the forms of public activity he devoted himself to in different life periods. As a result, it was determined that Levko G. Lukyanenko formed his main ideological positions (the necessity of the struggle for an independent democratic Ukraine) in his youth, and those remained almost unchanged throughout his life. The vision of the ways to achieve the main goal, however, has undergone certain changes in accordance with the historical realities: for more than half a century of his public activities in the framework of the official Soviet ideology has changed the part in the clandestine human rights movement and eventually turned into a purely political work.
The aim of the research consists in elucidating the nature and main aspects of the development of a language identity and national consciousness of the Ukrainians of Donetsk region during the period of "perestroika" and the first years of independence of Ukraine, in the context of modern ethno-national problems. The research methodology is based primarily on the principle of historicism, concretized by the approach to historical phenomena and processes from the standpoint of dynamics, the study of the relationships between them and their interdependence. The use of this principle allows us to study the dynamics of the historical process from the point of view of its past and development trends in the future. A number of general historical methods have been used, namely: comparative-historical, historical comparative studies, retrospective. The latter, in particular, provides for the reconstruction of certain phenomena in the process of the revival of a cultural and national identity of the Ukrainians of Donetsk region in the context of "perestroika" and the first years of independent Ukraine. This allows us to construct separate models for the development of a national consciousness in our time, using, at the same time, some historical patterns and traditions. The scientific novelty consists in analyzing the process of the revival of a language identity and national consciousness of the Ukrainians of Donetsk region in the context of "perestroika" and the first years of independent Ukraine. This allows us to design individual models for the development of a cultural and national identity under modern conditions. The Conclusions. The process of reviving the cultural and national identity of the Ukrainians of Donetsk region in the context of "perestroika" and the first years of independent Ukraine became an interdependent phenomenon with the emergence in Donetsk region of a number of cultural national and socio-political organizations, primarily, Donetsk regional organization of Taras Shevchenko the Ukrainian Language Society. Despite the active process of Russification and denationalization, which has been carried out since the 1930-ies, the Ukrainian identity in Donetsk region still prevailed for some time. However, a targeted Russification policy aimed at destroying the language identity and national consciousness of the Ukrainian, naturally led to the confusion of all the peoples of the Soviet Union on the principles of the so-called internationalism into one, artificially formed, "homo sovieticus". Thanks to public organizations and cultural national societies in Donetsk region at the end of the 1980-ies – beginning of the 1990-ies, the process of Ukrainization of the identity of the region population began. However, a number of factors prevented this. In particular, the predominantly individualistic orientation of ethnic self-expression of the Ukrainians of Donetsk region prevented the widespread development of their language identification and national identity. Also, as a result of a massive Russification and planting of chauvinistic stereotypes, the Ukrainians were deliberately turned into a second-class ethnic mass, the outcasts. The leaders of such a policy were mainly the former party-Komsomol functionaries, who, thanks to connections with criminals and oligarchic circles, reached leading positions in almost all authority structures during the 1990-ies. And, naturally, it was they, who stood at the origins of separatism long before the spring of 2014.
; This article is an attempt at a microhistorical study. Through analysis of documents from the personal archive of social activist, pedagogue and military expert Boris Ivanovitch Zhurin (1890–1964), the author demonstrates that the year 1939 turned to be very important in his career. It was precisely in 1939 that Zhurin changed his previous "modest" profession of an engineer-constructor specializing in concrete buildings for the profession of military expert and for the role of social activist and publicist. As a military expert, he spent the years 1939-1940 writing a monograph about the interaction of different combat arms, including artillery and air reconnaissance, during the Russian offensive in June, 1917. He was convinced that learning from this experience would be vital during the next war. As a social activist and publicist, Zhurin invented, described and promoted a new social institute which he called "parents' committees in multi-family dwellings," insisting that such committees would be the best instrument to control and improve family education. This second "know-how" was also based on the idea of interaction, since the parents' committees had to establish close relationships with district executive committees (ispolkomy), local Komsomol cells, school administration and school parents' committees, as well as the management offices of apartment buildings. Detailed study of Zhurin's archive and publications, combined with a reconstruction of the historical context of both 1939 and the "Thaw" years, lead the author to conclude that Zhurin saw Soviet society after the Great Terror as completely atomized, as demoralized by the low competence of the new army chiefs and state officials, and as lacking channels for transmitting knowledge and experience. During 1939, as well as during the subsequent years of his professional and social activity, Zhurin sought to rebuild and intensify "horizontal" social ties.
Summary. The purpose of the study is to analyze the prosopographic and commemorative aspects of the activities of representatives of socio-humanitarian sciences of the western regions of Ukraine in the first decade after their accession to the Ukrainian SSR; to show the influence of the Communist Party on the reformatting of the works of former figures of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Lviv, representatives of the Mykhailo Hrushevsky Scientific School, whose works were interpreted as "bourgeois-nationalist". The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism, systematics and objectivity with the involvement of special historical methods. The scientific novelty lies in the study of the peculiarities of scientific work and socio-political activity of famous representatives of socio-humanitarian sciences in the western regions of Ukraine, primarily in Lviv, in 1940–50՚s and shows the influence of ideological factors of the totalitarian era.Conclusions. It is claimed that the new Stalinist party administration sought to unify in the annexed western regions of the USSR not only the socio-economic but also the humanitarian sphere; tried to change the way of life of the scientific intelligentsia, involving it in Soviet forms of socio-political life (election campaigns, voluntary Saturday and Sunday work, parades and demonstrations, socialist competition, etc.), dominated by the Communist Party and "satellites" – the Komsomol and departmental labour unions. Officials of the ministries, the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, the Central Committee, regional committees and city committees of the CP(b)U systematically interfered in the scientific process of academic institutions and humanities departments of higher educational institutions, brutally involving scientists and teachers in the struggle against "bourgeois nationalism", whose works were constantly withdrawn from scientific circulation and fell into the special funds of scientific libraries. The history of Ukrainian statehood was increasingly interpreted by the authorities and their supporters as a process of strengthening the eternal friendship and brotherhood of the Ukrainian and Russian peoples, their struggle against foreign invaders. At the same time, the cult of the Russian language and literature was imposed, in general, the Russian/Soviet version of the historical process on the territory of Ukraine and other republics of the USSR, countries of "people՚s" democracy. As a result, not all scientists managed to avoid the webs of ideological and physical pressure from party officials and law enforcement agencies; some were forced to write works "to the drawer" hoping for better times. After the restoration of Ukraine՚s independence, many banned or looted works of contemporary humanities scholars were published or republished and such archeographic activity must be continued. ; The dissertation entitled "Reconstructing the History of the Russian Advertising Council" discusses the formation, work and closure of the Advertising Council in post-Soviet Russia. The research question is: What narratives exist among the people involved in the Russian Advertising Council about its formation, agenda and closure and what do these narratives reveal about the ways the actors remember the 1990s today? The principal players involved in founding the Advertising Council were interviewed by the author. Critically examined, the elicited narratives serve as sources for the reconstruction of the history of the Advertising Council. The research conducted borrows from the methodology employed in Oral History, meaning that the interviews with contemporary witnesses were examined and evaluated using discourse analysis and qualitative content analysis. Following an overview of the Soviet, late and post-Soviet advertising industry, the author portrays the individual players around the Advertising Council. Each protagonist brought his individual background knowledge to the Advertising Council, which helped shape this most important institution of the Russian advertising industry in as many specific ways. Their careers exhibit clear parallels to the careers of the members of the technical intelligentsia, Komsomol members and businessmen from the 1980s and 1990s already examined in the relevant literature. The study concludes that the protagonists involved in the advertising Council were part of the community connected to the New Russians or oligarchs and that they derived some sort of protected status from this position. Moreover, to the outside world they conveyed the impression of a self-made business elite. During the eyewitness interviews, they consciously re-enacted the part they used to play in the Council, which suggests that they wanted to detach themselves from their subjective point of view, to strive for an air of exclusivity. The promotion of three categories of goods proved particularly problematic for the industry at the time: tobacco and alcohol, pharmaceuticals, and sanitary products for women. Western tobacco companies entered post-socialist Russia because its market was attractive to them. Due to a lack of tobacco produced in Russia, they were able to hold on to their market share. The study also discusses the challenging situation in the health care sector due to the unstable economy. Against the background of social taboos, female hygiene articles emerged as products for which advertising proved problematic. Advertising in these areas was to be monitored and regulated by the Russian Advertising Council. However, the state interfered heavily in the work of the Council. Initially, the State Committee for Antimonopoly Policy severely restricted its work. This led to several disputes between the advertising community and the politicians. After a few years, the two parties reached a compromise, which the advertising industry considered to have been imposed on them. The interviewees involved in the Council spoke little and only under guarantee of anonymity about criminal entanglements in the 1990s, and usually avoided the subject if they could. Charts drawn up by the author based on her research show possible links to criminal organisations and some of the people interviewed indicated that it would have been impossible for the Council members to entirely es-cape links to the criminal underworld of the 1990s. The Advertising Council, founded in 1995, was closed down in early 2002. Of particular relevance is the investigation of the reasons for its closure, which, based on the narratives of the people involved, were manifold. One of the most important reasons given was that a Western tobacco company had stopped funding the Advertising Council. Other reasons given involved powerful personalities from the advertising industry who were said to have closed the Advertising Council, or the closure was blamed on external circumstances and coincidences. The conclusion can be drawn that the attempt to establish the Advertising Council as a lobby group independent of the state failed for political, economic, and motivational reasons. This study contributes to research in the field of the 1990s and may be considered a point of reference for further research into the advertising industry of the 1990s and the early 2000s, which are strongly bound up in the glamour culture and early days of Vladimir Putin's reign.
The life path, scientific-pedagogical and public activity of Volodymyr Sokurenko – a prominent Ukrainian jurist, doctor of law, professor, talented teacher of the Lviv Law School of Franko University are analyzed. It is found out that after graduating from a seven-year school in Zaporizhia, V. Sokurenko entered the Zaporizhia Aviation Technical School, where he studied two courses until 1937. 1/10/1937 he was enrolled as a cadet of the 2nd school of aircraft technicians named after All-Union Lenin Komsomol. In 1938, this school was renamed the Volga Military Aviation School, which he graduated on September 4, 1939 with the military rank of military technician of the 2nd category. As a junior aircraft technician, V. Sokurenko was sent to the military unit no. 8690 in Baku, and later to Maradnyany for further military service in the USSR Air Force. From September 4, 1939 to March 16, 1940, he was a junior aircraft technician of the 50th Fighter Regiment, 60th Air Brigade of the ZAK VO in Baku. The certificate issued by the Railway District Commissariat of Lviv on January 4, 1954 no. 3132 states that V. Sokurenko actually served in the staff of the Soviet Army from October 1937 to May 1946. The same certificate states that from 10/12/1941 to 20/09/1942 and from 12/07/1943 to 08/03/1945, he took part in the Soviet-German war, in particular in the second fighter aviation corps of the Reserve of the Supreme Command of the Soviet Army. In 1943 he joined the CPSU. He was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree and the Order of the Red Star (1943) as well as 9 medals «For Merit in Battle» during the Soviet-German war. With the start of the Soviet-German war, the Sokurenko family, like many other families, was evacuated to the town of Kamensk-Uralsky in the Sverdlovsk region, where their father worked at a metallurgical plant. After the war, the Sokurenko family moved to Lviv. In 1946, V. Sokurenko entered the Faculty of Law of the Ivan Franko Lviv State University, graduating with honors in 1950, and entered the graduate school of the Lviv State University at the Department of Theory and History of State and Law. V. Sokurenko successfully passed the candidate examinations and on December 25, 1953 in Moscow at the Institute of Law of the USSR he defended his thesis on the topic: «Socialist legal consciousness and its relationship with Soviet law». The supervisor of V. Sokurenko's candidate's thesis was N. Karieva. The Higher Attestation Commission of the Ministry of Culture of the USSR, by its decision of March 31, 1954, awarded V. Sokurenko the degree of Candidate of Law. In addition, it is necessary to explain the place of defense of the candidate's thesis by V. Sokurenko. As it is known, the Institute of State and Law of the USSR has its history since 1925, when, in accordance with the resolution of the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee of March 25, 1925, the Institute of Soviet Construction was established at the Communist Academy. In 1936, the Institute became part of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and in 1938 it was reorganized into the Institute of Law of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1941–1943 it was evacuated to Tashkent. In 1960-1991 it was called the Institute of State and Law of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In Ukraine, there is the Institute of State and Law named after V. Koretsky of the NAS of Ukraine – a leading research institution in Ukraine of legal profile, founded in 1949.It is noted that, as a graduate student, V. Sokurenko read a course on the history of political doctrines, conducted special seminars on the theory of state and law. After graduating from graduate school and defending his thesis, from October 1, 1953 he was enrolled as a senior lecturer and then associate professor at the Department of Theory and History of State and Law at the Faculty of Law of the Lviv State University named after Ivan Franko.By the decision of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Ministry of Higher Education of the USSR of December 18, 1957, V. Sokurenko was awarded the academic title of associate professor of the «Department of Theory and History of State and Law».V. Sokurenko took an active part in public life. During 1947-1951 he was a member of the party bureau of the party organization of LSU, worked as a chairman of the trade union committee of the university, from 1955 to 1957 he was a secretary of the party committee of the university. He delivered lectures for the population of Lviv region. Particularly, he lectured in Turka, Chervonohrad, and Yavoriv. He made reports to the party leaders, Soviet workers as well as business leaders. He led a philosophical seminar at the Faculty of Law. He was a deputy of the Lviv City Council of People's Deputies in 1955-1957 and 1975-1978.In December 1967, he defended his doctoral thesis on the topic: «Development of progressive political thought in Ukraine (until the early twentieth century)». The defense of the doctoral thesis was approved by the Higher Attestation Commission on June 14, 1968.During 1960-1990 he headed the Department of Theory and History of State and Law; in 1962-68 and 1972-77 he was the dean of the Law Faculty of the Ivan Franko Lviv State University. In connection with the criticism of the published literature, on September 10, 1977, V. Sokurenko wrote a statement requesting his dismissal from the post of Dean of the Faculty of Law due to deteriorating health. During 1955-1965 he was on research trips to Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Austria, and Bulgaria. From August 1966 to March 1967, in particular, he spent seven months in the United States, England and Canada as a UN Fellow in the Department of Human Rights. From April to May 1968, he was a member of the government delegation to the International Conference on Human Rights in Iran for one month. He spoke, in addition to Ukrainian, English, Polish and Russian. V. Sokurenko played an important role in initiating the study of an important discipline at the Faculty of Law of the Lviv University – History of Political and Legal Studies, which has been studying the history of the emergence and development of theoretical knowledge about politics, state, law, ie the process of cognition by people of the phenomena of politics, state and law at different stages of history in different nations, from early statehood and modernity.Professor V. Sokurenko actively researched the problems of the theory of state and law, the history of Ukrainian legal and political thought. He was one of the first legal scholars in the USSR to begin research on the basics of legal deontology. V. Sokurenko conducted extensive research on the development of basic requirements for the professional and legal responsibilities of a lawyer, similar to the requirements for a doctor. In further research, the scholar analyzed the legal responsibilities, prospects for the development of the basics of professional deontology. In addition, he considered medical deontology from the standpoint of a lawyer, law and morality, focusing on internal (spiritual) processes, calling them «the spirit of law.» The main direction of V. Sokurenko's research was the problems of the theory of state and law, the history of legal and political studies. The main scientific works of professor V. Sokurenko include: «The main directions in the development of progressive state and legal thought in Ukraine: 16th – 19th centuries» (1958) (Russian), «Democratic doctrines about the state and law in Ukraine in the second half of the 19th century (M. Drahomanov, S. Podolynskyi, A. Terletskyi)» (1966), «Law. Freedom. Equality» (1981, co-authored) (in Russian), «State and legal views of Ivan Franko» (1966), «Socio-political views of Taras Shevchenko (to the 170th anniversary of his birth)» (1984); «Political and legal views of Ivan Franko (to the 130th anniversary of his birth)» (1986) (in Russian) and others.V. Sokurenko died on November 22, 1994 and was buried in Holoskivskyi Cemetery in Lviv.Volodymyr Sokurenko left a bright memory in the hearts of a wide range of scholars, colleagues and grateful students. The 100th anniversary of the Scholar is a splendid opportunity to once again draw attention to the rich scientific heritage of the lawyer, which is an integral part of the golden fund of Ukrainian legal science and education. It needs to be studied, taken into account and further developed.
; This article examines the nature and manifestations of Ukrainian nationalism during World War II. The authors dwell upon the making of the nationalist movement in emigration, and later across Ukraine. The authors come to the conclusion that, in its essence, Ukrainian nationalism was a social-political movement oriented towards the expression, protection, and actualization of the interests of the Ukrainian people. The creation of a Ukrainian nationalist state was seen as the primary means for resolving the above objectives. At the same time, the struggle for its creation began amid the unconcluded process of the formation of the Ukrainian nation. Worthy of note is also the relatively late emergence of political organizations pretending to the expression, as well as localization, of national interests mainly in Western Ukraine and, above all, in Halychyna, a region that had long been part of Poland and Austro-Hungary, which facilitated the entrenchment of anti-Russian sentiments in the latter. By the beginning of World War II, the influence of the Halychynans in the Ukrainian national movement had grown, while the national leaders who had stayed in the USSR were no longer active or were subjected to repressions. The leading positions in the Ukrainian nationalist movement came to be firmly occupied by the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), although it was split into several factions within itself, which nevertheless shared the common sentiment of not just Ukrainophilia, but of Rusophobia and Anti-Sovietism, a sentiment largely exacerbated under the influence of a close partnership with the German Nazis. As a result, during the war the most widespread were the radical, more aggressive, manifestations of Ukrainian nationalism, which were accompanied by extreme forms of discrimination against representatives of other ethnicities, going as far as their physical extermination: the Russians, Jews, and Poles. Later on, hatred would be aimed at representatives of their "own" ethnicity deemed to oppose a specific faction within the OUN. Cruel terror attacks would be carried out against residents of Ukraine's both eastern and western regions communists and Komsomol members, party officials and Soviet activists. By the same token, the OUN movement would be suppressed via mass repressions by homeland security agencies. The events of World War II and its aftermath resulted in serious trauma for many residents of Ukraine and may be viewed as having had an impact on the development of the present-day crisis in Ukraine.
