Dr. Sherman P. Vinograd fulfilled the roles of Chief of Medical Science and Technology and Director of Biomedical Research at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) from the fall of 1961 until the spring of 1979. In this role he shaped, organized, and directed NASA's program of medical research as a funded program of studies, which was carried out in not only NASA Center laboratories, but also in university, industry, and other government laboratories and hospitals all over the country. It produced a large substrate of information through its bed rest studies, vestibular, bone, neuromuscular, hematology, and cardiovascular researches. It also produced valuable fall-out, such as an accurate bone density measurement technique which is now in common clinical use. ; His major activities during this career were conceptualizing, establishing, and chairing the Space Medicine Advisory Group (SPAMAG) charged with defining the earth-based and space-based research and life-support requirements for a manned orbiting research laboratory. This group designed a carefully planned study utilizing highly qualified, specialized members of the scientific community. They postulated a non-existent orbiting laboratory to be designed according to the needs of future human flight crews and requirements for human spaceflight information. This would result in the creation of Skylab. ; He was also responsible for establishing the In-flight Medical Experiments Program in preparation for the Apollo series of manned space flights. This program was a series of carefully designed flight crew studies derived from proposals by qualified scientists both from within and outside NASA to evaluate human responses to spaceflight. ; In addition, Dr. Vinograd developed a supportive Research and Development Program necessary to provide pertinent ground-based data and to advance state-of-the-art medical measurement technology, a major development of which was the Integrated Medical and Behavioral Laboratory Measurement System (IMBLMS). This consisted of medical experiments and accompanying equipment necessary to perform them that was used from the Gemini through the Skylab manned space flight programs. Carried aboard virtually any post-Apollo space vehicle by virtue of its rack and module design, these designs were used well into the future. He also fostered the continuing ground-based medical research program sponsored and/or conducted by NASA. ; The Dr. Sherman P. We all recognize that flight over private property must in some way be legalized. If the courts were to hold that any entrance into the air space constituted a violation of the legal rights of the owner of the soil, it would indeed be a great blow to the aeronautical industry In order to legalize flight it would be necessary to secure the permission of all landowners over whose property a flight was made. It is conceivable that this could be accomplished along regular airways. However, it is often necessary to deviate from the regular course by reason of weather conditions—and sometimes the deviation is involuntary The time may come when travel by air will be confined to specifically defined airways. However, in the present state of the industry, if flight over private property at all heights was made unlawful, the future of air transportation would be exceedingly dark. It is therefore necessary to legalize flight over private property if travel by air is to continue its growth and development. Clearly it is to the interest of our government and of the public that transportation by air be encouraged. To be balanced against these public and social interests are the interests of the private property owner. His right to use and enjoy his property must be protected. In defining the right of flight over private property we must recognize the public and social interest in freedom of flight, but at the same time we must give due emphasis to the interests of the property owner. Space will not permit of a comprehensive enumeration of the provisions of the Act or of the problems which have already arisen in its application, but an attempt will be made to briefly state and discuss its salient features and the more important problems which have arisen to date, and in conclusion reference will be made to the problem of constitutionality which is ever present in pioneering social and economic legislation.

Moss's first diary entry begins on page 13 and is dated September 13, 1943 --- the day his unit departed for overseas duty --- and the last is D-Day, June 6, 1944. During the bulk of this period his unit was in Italy at Anzio Beachhead and vicinity. Moss describes action at Anzio, German air attacks, unit casualities, and other events relating to the military campaign. This book "My Life in the Service" was issued to members of the armed forces. It contains space to enter important names, events, and other personal information.

Harry C. Buck (class of 1910) wrote this letter to Frank Austin Eyman on February 6th, 1935. Although Buck writes that he won't be able to attend the upcoming reunion, the letter remains humorous and jovial. He suggests that Eyman throw "Ab" in the lake and the reunion be transferred to Chennai (Madras). In the last paragraph, Buck writes that he is "having a grand old row" over amateurism, presumably in sports, and that he has not yet been accepted into the "best of circles." ; Frank "Fuzzy" Austen Eyman was a student at Otterbein University and Springfield College. He taught at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh from 1912-1918, when he was appointed the graduate manager of athletics. Harry Crowe Buck (1884-1943) was born in Liverpool and graduated from Springfield College in 1910 with a BS in Physical Education. In 1919, while teaching and coaching basketball at Galesburg High School in Illinois, he was invited by the International Committee of the YMCA to serve as the Physical Director of the Central YMCA in Madras, India. The Buck family traveled to Chennai (Madras) that year. The only facilities were a dingy, small gym and an open space exactly the dimensions of a basketball court, but Buck turned the space into the YMCA College of Physical Education. With a donation from the Indian Government, the YMCA expanded onto a 65-acre site in Saidapet. Buck continued to guide the college until his death in 1943. ; Right edge is damaged.

In undertaking to survey the work of the 1941 legislature the aim has not been to attain complete coverage. Space limitations and the time factor have dictated that only certain phases be considered and that brevity rather than complete analysis be the guide. In selecting topics for discussion the aim has been to give attention to those statutes which are likely to be of greatest concern to practicing lawyers. At the outset this meant that virtually all of the largest group of statutes, those dealing with the powers of governmental units, be eliminated. Of the remaining statutes all could not be discussed, or even mentioned, and while the selection has been arbitrary the attempt has been to focus upon those which appear to be of the most general interest. Special regard has been had for statutes affecting judicial procedure, to those of a regulatory character and to social legislation. Because of space and time limitations consideration of some material has necessarily been postponed until the next issue of the Review. Among the statutes which will be discussed in the later issue are those dealing with agriculture, banking, small loans, taxation, trusts, and workmen's compensation. The survey has been a cooperative enterprise by the members of the law faculty of the University of Washington, with the valuable help of members of the student editorial board of the Review. In particular, Dean Falknor was assisted by Mr. Arthur Quigley. Mr. Robert Buck aided Professor O'Bryan. Professor Shattuck had the assistance of Mr. Herbert Droker, and Professor Sholley, of Mr. Snyder Jed King and Mr. Bayard Crutcher.

This typescript, with photographs pasted in, compiles the activities undertaken in Minneapolis parks in 1938. Major improvements were made to River Road West; lawn spaces and recreational facilities were improved in many older parks; fifty-four concrete courts were built; nearly five miles of fences were erected; and 3,315 trees, 1,363 evergreens and 2,184 shrubs were planted, all by W.P. A. workers. In the fall of 1933, the United States government inaugurated a program of federal work relief for the unemployed. The purpose of this program was two-fold: to provide work for the unemployed, and to initiate and support useful public projects round the country. The Minneapolis Park Board was included under this program. Beginning under the Civil Works Administration and the Emergency Relief Administration, and continuing under the Works Progress Administration many rehabilitation and improvement projects were undertaken in Minneapolis parks.

An article titled "Shawn refuses to use Propaganda to advance cause of Communists" written by Ted Shawn and published by the Boston Herald in May 28, 1936. This article is the 23th in a series of 27 articles about dancing written by Ted Shawn and published between April 7 and June 9, 1936 by the Boston Herald. This article focuses on Shawn's views on the role of dancing in political affairs. Shawn then goes to describe the state of dancing in the Soviet Union. ; Ted Shawn was the founder and director of the Jacob's Pillow, a dance center, school and performance space located in Becket, Massachusetts. The organization is known for the oldest internationally acclaimed Summer dance festival in the United States. Ted Shawn also taught at Springfield College during the 1932-33 school year, and a number of Springfield College students went on tour with Shawn in the first all male modern dance troupe. Ted Shawn (October 21, 1891 - January 9, 1972), originally Edwin Myers Shawn, was one of the first notable male pioneers of American modern dance. Along with creating Denishawn with former wife Ruth St. Denis, he also created the well-known, all-male company Ted Shawn and His Men Dancers. He was also the founder and creator of the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in Massachusetts, and was knighted by the King of Denmark for his efforts on behalf of the Royal Danish Ballet.

Building no. 113. Constructed in 1860. The elongated "T" plan Cavalry building was used to house Cavalry units until WWI, when it became the Quartermaster warehouse and commissary. A devastating hurricane on September 4-5, 1933, struck Brownsville and caused extensive damage to the post. Winds were estimated at 125 miles an hour after 106 wind gusts blew the anemometer away. One of the buildings on the fort that received damage was the Cavalry Building No. 113. A larger (100 feet longer) but identical Artillery barracks (No. 133), built by Wainwright near the area where the Brownsville Compress towers now stand, was heavily damaged and was deemed "not habitable" on the Post Engineer's Record. It was probably too far removed from the active base and no longer needed to warrant repairs. Much of the Cavalry Quarters veranda must have been damaged and removed, as it does not appear on either post records. Runyon photographs show how the porch looked in the early 1900s. They are also a record of the building's appearance before the north wing extension was added. Old bricks juxtaposed by new bricks make this noticeable. Repairs were made in June, 1934. By the 1930s, the T-plan structure's central block was used as the Main Post Quartermaster's Office sales commissary office with the Commissary, Clothing and Equipage Storeroom in the north wing and subsistence storeroom in the south. Partitioned walls are shown in detailed 1936 floor plans, with little change to space usage. Revised records from 1942 label it as the Post Commissary with both wings as storerooms and an exterior wood framed "issue shed" attached to the north wing. A roofed, open passageway separated the main block from the central block. It is not known when the central block was attached to the main by brick. Maps show there were two brick N.C.O. officers' duplexes and a garage where the Smith Amphitheater and parking lot are presently located. There was a "wash rack" on the corner of Gorgas Drive and Ringgold Road. There was also a laundry and "motor transport" building for the 12th cavalry across the street from where the New Student Union is now located. Adjacent to the west wing and across the street where the Bookstore now sits stood a shoe repair shop and medical dispensary for the 124th cavalry. A wide-open corral in front of Cavalry extended up to the entrance of the Rusteberg building. Four warehouses once stood where the Life, Health and Sciences Building is located. Two barracks buildings were constructed behind Building 113 around 1940 and were removed in the late 1990s. A small plate with number "113" can still be seen above the entrance. The Cavalry building was not immediately used by the college. A Sanborn fire insurance map from 1949 indicates the west wing was used by Sears & Roebuck for warehouse storage and the east wing to house auto supplies storage with a cold storage room at the far end. The central block is labeled as general storage. Other former Army buildings belonging to the city behind Cavalry appear to have also been used as commercial rental spaces bordered by Brownsville Compress warehouses. These compress warehouses were former hay barns. The building appears to have been used by the college throughout the 1980s for electronics technology classrooms. Campus Police, which was once in the Old Morgue building and later in Building 23 (Married Officers' Quarters) during the mid to late 1980s, later moved into Cavalry with Student Health Services with room for computer classrooms. Renovation and reconstruction of roofed porches were planned by Design Five Architects and contracted to the Jearel Adams Construction Co. It is still in use by Campus Police, and Student Health Services had relocated to the Cortez complex. The east wing is used by Computer Sciences and Computer Information Systems. Building no. 89. The Art Annex is now used as an office and storage space. One set of Post Plans designate it as a Telephone Exchange and a Bachelor N.C.O. Quarters. Floor plans have a telephone switchboard, sleeping quarters, and signal corps detachment room crossed out, leaving a lavatory and N.C.O. quarters on the first level. A signal corps workshop and lighting switchboard were shown on the second floor loft. The difference of the second set of Post Plans place the two upper rooms as storage and switchboard rooms. Walls are 15 inches wide. Both plans do not give a date when it was built. It was likely built in 1904, the same time as building 88. Its double doors were once a single door, with a five-step stoop at the entrance. HABS photographs taken in 1977 show a metal exterior smokepipe once rose from the exterior sill when it housed a kiln and it was once connected to Building 88 by a flat-roofed wood frame shed. The east entrance was also brick sealed. A door was once located near the southeast corner with another directly across to Building No. 88 when the two buildings were joined by the wooden structure. This building was torn down and entrances sealed to attain the historical authenticity of the two buildings. Openings at the foot of the building have also been brick filled. In Ballots, Bullets and Barking Dogs, historian Bruce Aiken recalled that the building was used by the Sergeant of the Guard. Whiskey bottles, over one hundred of them, were discovered beneath wooden floors while being renovated for use by the college. Good old-fashioned drunkenness back then was known as the delirium tremens. This was one the place to party on the Army post! The new Washington Domestic and Foreign Corporation Act was enacted by the State of Washington at the session of its Legislature convened January 9, and adjourned March 9, 1933. The Act was approved by the Governor on March 21, 1933, and by an express provision therein became effective on and after January 1, 1934. The Act is patterned upon the Uniform Business Corporation Act and may be cited as such. The history of, and the consideration given to, the drafting of this Act is treated in a note introductory to the draft originally submitted to the Legislature, published in an earlier issue of this Law Review. Naturally, many and various lines of approach suggest themselves, as the Act in its entirety reflects approximately the entire law of corporations, and the changes made involve policies and problems which for an adequate treatment would require volumes rather than the space allotted here. For example, the new Ohio Corporation Act enacted in 1927 and amended in 1929 has already brought forth three leading articles dealing each with one of the many problems suggested by the Act. Incidentally, it may be observed that the Ohio Act is in many respects quite similar to the Uniform Business Corporation Act, in fact, being enacted after various interchanges of views with the Committee of the Commissioners on Uniform State Laws.6 Accordingly, the reports. of the proceedings leading to the enactment of the Ohio Act furnish much illustrative and enlightening material for the consideration of the Uniform Business Corporation Act. When, with the foregoing, one considers the many recent articles concerning corporate problems forming a background for the recently enacted corporation acts," treating among other subjects the historical development, the changing concepts," the reserved power," and the rights of dissenting stockholders,—it is apparent that it must presently be desirable to limit this consideration of the Washington Act to a summary and somewhat more or less clerical treatment.
