This article evaluates the impact of New Labour's 'modernization project' on two key non‐departmental public bodies for sport, Sport England and UK Sport. Our analysis concentrates on identifying the sources of the general momentum for modernization in the sport sector, how it has been interpreted by government in relation to the two organizations, the nature and consequences of modernization for both organizations, and the future of modernization. The analysis is informed by a range of public documents produced by government and by the two sports agencies, together with a series of seven interviews conducted with senior staff and members of Sport England and UK Sport and with senior civil servants in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Our conclusions suggest that modernization has resulted in a narrowing of the two organizations' objectives, the adoption of business‐like principles and a 'command and control' regime in relationships with key frontline delivery partners.

From the inception f the field of sports history in the early 1970s, a major area of research regarding US sports history has been documenting how racial and ethnic minorities played, participated in, and used athletics for various purposes, such as to challenge negative ethnic stereotypes and to hold on to aspects of their own cultures. Several early projects dealt with baseball in the lives of African Americans, particularly about the Negro Leagues and their importance to civic life in the years after the Great Migration. Subsequently, scholars researched other groups and their experiences with sport. A worthwhile example of such works on Italian Americans (Baldassaro 2011) is noted under General Overviews and Related Articles. While the discipline has expanded, one glaring lacuna has remained: the participation of the Latino community in sport (at all levels) and the significance thereof. Fortunately, in the late 20th and early 21st centuries a few individuals have begun to remedy this gap. While certainly not the oldest project, the most important early work is Viva Baseball! Latin Major Leaguers and Their Special Hunger (Regalado 1998, cited under Baseball).
The fan sports blogger, a sports fan who contributes their own narratives to the quotidian reportage of sports by publishing an online sports news site on platforms like Blogger and Wordpress, is a relatively new fan presence. The scant research devoted to this nascent culture has questioned its potential impact on mainstream sports media, or the blogging behaviour of sports entities, but little yet is understood about the output and information-seeking behaviours of these fan bloggers. Given the increasingly entwined relationship between media and sport, these bloggers can be viewed as both sports fans, of which there is a growing corpus of surrounding literature, and as media consumers who gather information from the source they emulate. An increased understanding of these fan bloggers can illustrate how sports media audiences both harness and make sense of the media they consume and offer key insights into the interpretative behaviours of sports audiences. In this project a case study of 20 fan sports blogs from two sports blogospheres were analysed, looking for ways in which fan sports bloggers both use mainstream sports media and emulate sports media in two different sports contexts.

On the 50th anniversary of the ISSA and IRSS, Annelies Knoppers, one of the leading scholars in understanding the culture of sport in organizational settings, considers how the critical lens of sociology can enhance and mesh with research on sport management. Knoppers argues that there have been lost opportunities and understandings from the little overlap between scholars publishing in journals in the sociology of sport and sport management. Using the topic of gender and leadership, she describes the benefits that might result from using a sociological lens and a 'critical reflexivity' to study power and social inequalities in sport management and organizations. Consideration is given to how critical understandings about gender can enhance organizational effectiveness by valuing 'hybridity' in leadership styles. The essay closes with arguments for a critical intersectional approach to the study of sport management with recognition that 'disciplinary' practices shape the wielding of leadership power within organizations.
The USA are regarded as the leading sporting nation. But what do we really know about the American sport besides the fact that Baseball, American Football and Cheerleading originate there? What is meant by terms such as Athletics, Intercollegiate Sports, Intramural Sports, Title IX, Physical Education or the "Y"? So far, there has been only little German language literature about the American sport, its structures and characteristic forms. This book is making a first try to close this gap. The individual contributions, which have been written by well-known American and German researchers on sport sciences, show that sport in America has a completely different structure than German sport with its clubs and societies.
