Stanislaw Staszic was an educator and statesman, translator, political writer, philosopher, economic activist, philanthropist, pacifist, explorer, and geologist. Thanks to speculation and savings, he accumulated property worth millions, which he earmarked for public purposes. In a didactic poem entitled Ród ludzki (The Human Race), published in the years 1819 to 1820 (and written in the years 1791 to 1814), S. Staszic not only presented the phases of human development, but also - as the first amongst Polish scholars - the idea of a general association of nations. Although earlier attempts to unite Europe (taken by ancient Greeks, Romans, Charlemagne and Napoleon Bonaparte) had ended in fiasco, European nations had reached a point where a new political organization could be achieved. S. Staszic believed that the association of nations would ensure sustainable peace and create conditions for the development of the economy.

Stanisław Staszic was born on 6 November, 1755 in Piła a to a wealthy middle class family. Staszic played an important role in the development of Polish industry, working at the same time as a geologist and studying nature (in 1825 he published information about the Izerskie and Karkonosze Mountains). In the years 1816–1824 he held the post of the director general of Department of Industry and Crafts of the Congress Kingdom. At that time he devised a plan for redevelopment of the Industrial Region of Old Poland and, after he had founded in 1816 the Hrubieszow Agricultural Society, he became one of the pioneers of the peasant cooperative movement. He resumed exploitation of coal from the Reden deposit located in the present day Dąbrowa Górnicza. On his initiative a lot of industrial buildings were erected e.g. the first tin smelting works in the Kingdom of Poland (4 smelting works under one name of "Konstanty" – 1816–1822) and iron ore metallurgy centres. He also wrote a poem entitled "The Human Race 1919–1920".

The author presents the manner of understanding the notion of a 'nation' in Polish intellectual space at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The specific, historical and political situation of Poland brought forth an untypical answer to the question, "What does it mean to be Polish?". Such an answer is exemplified by the political thought of Stanisław Staszic. The author subjects particular writings of Staszic to scrutiny, demonstrating both the evolution of his thinking and the foundations upon which his interpretation of the concept of a 'nation' was based.

Stanisław Staszic's Tombstone and the Image-Building Policy of the Warsaw Society of Friends of Sciences
The article is devoted to the artistic setting of Stanisław Staszic's (1755–1826) burial place, for which his main heir, the Warsaw Royal Society of the Friends of Sciences (TKWPN), was responsible. The inspiration to raise this topic was the discovery of two previously unknown Jakub Tatarkiewicz's designs of Staszic's unrealized neoclassical tombstone in the collections of the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw (AGAD). However, the projects were never commissioned by TKWPN but were the sculptor's proposal. By analysing the relationship between these artistic projects and the initiatives concerning Staszic's tomb which stemmed directly from the Society (a big raw stone as memorial), the article highlights the problem of TKWPN's participation in creating the posthumous cult of its long-time president and most important benefactor. The TKWPN's seemingly paradoxical reluctance to glorify Staszic by means of traditional (artistic) forms of commemoration can be interpreted as a logical action calculated to benefit the Society's image. Therefore, focusing on this single aspect of the posthumous cult of Staszic, directly related to the TKWPN, this article refers to the image-building policy of this institution, and thus to the ways of building its social status. At the same time, it tackles the issue of the prestige of science and scientific patronage as a new (from the early 19th-century perspective) form of public merit.

Przyjazd Corazziego do Polski był efektem decyzji o sprowadzeniu z Włoch młodego, zdolnego architekta, gotowego realizować ambitne plany architektoniczno-urbanistyczne rządu polskiego. Zaproszenie z prośbą o wskazanie kandydata skierował najprawdopodobniej namiestnik Józef Zajączek pismem do księcia Toskanii.

"This book investigates the first moment in history when philanthropy was used as a self-standing claim to fame and philanthropists started being considered as a distinct breed of public figures. In search for the cause of this development, it examines the way in which public images of early philanthropists in different parts of Europe were shaped in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The work draws on a comparison between a British prison reformer John Howard, an Alsatian pastor and humanitarian Jean-Frédéric Oberlin, and Stanisław Staszic, a key figure of Enlightenment politics in Congress Poland. Revealing parallel mechanisms at play in different national contexts, it argues that famous philanthropists ushered in a new genre of fame, 'philanthropic celebrity', that placed Enlightenment ideals about virtue within the framework of early celebrity culture. In an original marriage of biography, cultural history, and media studies, Adrian Wesołowski contributes new answers to questions such as: What are the origins of our collective fascination in the figures of great philanthropists? Did secularisation of charity entail a change in the perception of its famous performers? Were the roots of the late eighteenth century 'humanitarian revolution' mainly economic or rather cultural?"--
