Acknowledging that the political scientist wanting to explore Arkansas government and politics is often frustrated by the lack of sources and data, the author presents a wideranging guide to little known materials. There are a few general reference works, such as the Historical Report of the Secretary of State, and a half-dozen bibliographies and document listings. Numerous documents of more narrow focus are noted, available from various executive, legislative, and judicial offices as well as from university groups and historical societies. The author also offers a syllabus for a course in Arkansas politics, drawing upon a number of the sources cited and focusing on the dramatic change believed to have characterized Arkansas politics in recent years.

In his paper, 'Sex Differences in Science Achievement at G.C.E. 0 Level', Mr Ventura refers to an analysis by Falzon and Sammut of the results of rational examinations held in Government Secondary Schools in June-July 1975. Much against expectation, they found that girls scored significantly higher than boys even in a subject like General Science. In trying to account for this result, Falzon and Sammut hazarded that one of the reasons for the girls' superiority was their better grasp of English. Such a conclusion would give English a determining role in a candidate's success, or failure for that matter, in subjects where the language is the medium of instruction - of reading and writing and, often, of teacher's explanation. ; peer-reviewed

This study assesses the status of the teaching of contemporary issues in secondary social studies classrooms in four southwest Virginia school divisions. One hundred and sixteen secondary teachers in these school divisions were surveyed concerning their attitudes toward contemporary issues and the instruction of these issues in their social studies classrooms. Mean score results show that the issues that teachers perceived to be most significant to humankind were generally those issues that were given more extensive coverage in the curriculum. Teachers were divided when asked what issues would best be covered in each of the four major secondary subject areas. Each subject area was clearly noted for specific coverage of particular issues, with government classes providing the greatest amount of coverage and world history classes the least amount. A variety of teaching strategies, sources of information, and evaluation strategies were implemented in this instruction. Teachers also detailed what they considered to be major sources of support for the teaching of these issues. Finally, while teachers noted that contemporary issues were detailed in their curricula, they perceived limited coordination among teachers in this instruction. There are many advantages for a law graduate to pursuing a period of advanced study of legal problems and issues abroad. Colleges and Universities in other countries may be able to offer tuition or facilities in specialised topics, or may offer new approaches to legal issues, which can stimulate the student and enable him or her to return home with new ideas. Postgraduate legal education can therefore be very useful whether you are intending to become a law teacher yourself, or go into practice, or into government service. The basic requirement for entry into postgraduate courses is a good honours degree from a University or College with an international standing, plus a good knowledge of English. It is vital for the student as well as the University to ensure that this necessary educational background has been achieved. Nothing is more disappointing than to embark on a course and find that you are badly prepared for it. You can waste a lot of time and money trying, sometimes too late, to remedy a deficiency in your basic education. ; peer-reviewed

Teaching assistants are represented by unions in the majority of large universities in Ontario and British Columbia (and in one smaller Saskatchewan university). Both traditional economic motivation and social/psychological/political factors appear to have contributed to unionization. The unionized universities tend to be in urban settings, to have large graduate student enrolments and to have faced greater budgetary concerns at the time of unionization. Graduate students in those first unionized had lower incomes than others and a higher proportion enrolled in the humanities and social sciences and the discrepancy was greater between the income of students in these fields and that of students in other fields. The refusal of labour relations boards in Canada to allow the "student" relationship to invalidate an "employee" relationship contrasts with decisions of the (U.S.) National Labour Relations Board. This and the fact that Canadian public policy is generally more supportive of public sector unionization and more protective of unions during the period of organizing and negotiating a first agreement, perhaps account for the greater extent of T.A. unionization in Canada than in the U.S. Although as short-term, part-time employees, T.A. 's would seem to be unlikely candidates for unionization, T.A. bargaining is now an accepted institutional reality with collective agreement achievements to point to and dues income to draw on. Future budgetary, program and priority changes are likely to generate graduate student anxiety and trigger further T.A. unionization. ; Les maîtres-assistants de neuf universités canadiennes se sont syndiqués de 1974 â 1.980. 'Languages do not die natural deaths', as Daniel Corkery, the distinguished Irish scholar has observed, 'they are murdered, and their murderers are those who would destroy t.he soul of the nation'. The truth of this observation becomes plain if we glance at those communities troubled by a 'Language Problem'. Language problems are in fact a disease, of which imperialism is the carrier, and they trouble communities which are, or until relatively recently were, subject to the political domination of an imperialist state. This is certainly true of the Welsh language, whose survival is in question for the second time in five centuries. In the nineteenth century, over 90% of the population of Wales was Welsh speaking, many of them monoglot; by the recent Census the number had dropped to under 30%,1 while the monoglot speakers had all but disappeared. It is true that the rate of decrease has slowed down, so we seem to be reaching a turn of the tide, but the danger is so great that Welsh patriots are rousing them- selves to a determined effort to save the language and to recover lost ground. ; N/A
