Despite the fact that it is widely established that the concept of race doesn't have a biological foundation, it is still discussed whether it might have a political and social meaning. A key elaboration of a possible non-biological use of this concept is the one of W. E. Du Bois, which we try to analyze in this paper. Thanks to recent theoretical formulation and reinterpretation of this author, we try to articulate Du Bois use of "race" following three axes (social ontology, subjection and subjectivation process). In conclusion we discuss a potential major critical issue in Du Bois's argument.
The article explores the political space from the perspective of contemporary cities and political subjectification within them. Today the Right to the City is mainly configured as a right to transform urban spaces, adapting them to plural and different life forms. A plurality of conscious and responsible political subjects occupies and crosses the urban space, often changing sign and direction of sedimented normative representations. We can say that these forms of political subjectification exceed the incl usion/exclusion dialectics, establishing themselves into a selective and differential logic of inclusion. A logic that works both through strategies of adaptation and resistance, of mediation and counter conduct. containing elements of conflict.
The crisis Ivory Coast went through in the last decade, has been enquired by many observers in its connection with the rise of youth as a pivotal actor in the national political arena. In this perspective, processes of political and religious subjectivation of the "jeunes patriotes" have been interpreted by scholars as a means of access to modernity and to full citizenship. The paper, based on field research, draws on the concrete, personal practices of moral and political subjectivation undertaken by young nationalist orators who speak in Abidjan's public parliaments called "agora". The ethnography of their daily life, their performances in public spaces and their management by political leaders, shows how becoming an orator and a nationalist full-time militant leads to paths of access to status, inclusion and economic resources. On the other side, it is shown how the same path leads to subjection through forms of self-discipline and subordination going beyond the public-political domain and affecting the militant's self. In her article, Viviana Segreto means to reconstruct the theoretical genealogy of political relationship between citizenship in the polis and otherness, that's to say the foreigner, the barbarous. Through the analysis of Plato texts and of some contemporary scholars regarding classic thinking, the author stresses the organization of political space in Athens in its practices of exclusion and inclusion, disciplined by kratos and nomos, and so she traces a lines of political subjectivation.
Through the tales of a group of former activists of "Lotta continua", an extra-parliamentary left-wing group, this work traces the cycle of mobilization which Italy went through during the Seventies, in search of the intersections between collective events and subjective experiences. The text focuses on two themes which are considered the tips of a controversial shared memory: political violence on one hand, and neo-feminism on the other. These two steps result fundamental in the process of subjectivation of individual men and women, and their effects can also be traced by observing the individual and collective outcomes of "demobilization".
A strange obsession for truth seems to define the present time: injunction to truth-telling, call to being authentic, fear of the fake are some of the features characterizing practices and rethorics of our living together. The realm of politics appears to be a privileged ground to this end, being able to grasp the symptoms diffused in the everyday life and configure them into steady models of behaviour through the effectiveness of its (self)representations. This paper aims to address the rhetoric pervasiveness of the concept of truth by inquiring the semantic field deployed by neologism "truthiness" and its Italian translation "veracità", tentatively defined as a "natural" truth that presents itself without mediation or filters and keeps together diverse phenomena, from popular wisdom to food wholesomeness. As a matter of fact, the need for witnessing one's genuine and truthful being seems to be the recurrent feature in several cultural expressions of the present time, as well as in the subsequent subjectivation processes. The goal of the paper is thus to analyse this "aesthetics of truthiness" to outline its specific enunciative strategies that testify how the matter of post-truth should be addressed primarily in terms of behaviours instead of knowledge.
; This work aims to analyse subjectivation processes and impoverishment of work starting from understanding the reticular torsion of capitalism and its organizational principles. Scholars have traditionally not given enough attention to unpaid work, thus my considerations move from formal and informal dinamics of economy. This is because from this point of view, we can see why the expansion of fields of capitalist capture constitute one of the key factors at the origin of work devalutation and its lack of monetary recognition. The accumulation process, in the new capitalist paradigm, seems to concerns with new lands, different from the traditional ones of production. Borders between interest and disinterest, productive and unproductive get blurred, expanding areas of interpenetration between formal and informal economy and the production of value outside of the monetary recognition. In this way, the desire of capital reproduction is translated in the individual desire of self-realization. Effectively, the subjectyfing dispositive emphasizes passional aspects of value production, while growing the indvidualization of risks. Thus, on one hand the capital increase its own accumulation opportunities, through colonizing individual subjectivity, on the other hand, the same process increase impoverishment and isolation risks for those who are involved. In order to investigate the relation between paid and unpaid work with the giustificational regimes that qualify this relation and individual and organizational risks, I have used three case studies: the first one in a research laboratory managed by a governmental organization, the second in a social cooperative and the third on volunteer workers for the Universal Exposition 2015, Milan Expo. From these case studies emerges that unpaid work is a shared condition, but justified only at individual level, borrowing the grammar from self-therapy and affection, when the worker looks towards the present, while promise and bet grammars when the worker looks towards the future.
The aim of this research is to delineate, within the Sartrian thought of the Sixties, the mobile perimeter inside which to define ethics as the overcoming possibility for a critical thought. In other words: as the subjective assumption of its political dimension. The shift of Sartre's historical-political thought follows a development not yet studied enough by scholars. The manuscripts of the Sixties about dialectical ethics appear as the fundamental completion of the dialectical experience of the Critique de la Raison dialectique (1960). Sartre was not able to publish the second part of the book during his life: indeed, the blockage of that work is the result of the structural limit of every attempt to conceptualize historical experience. In the Critique, the possibility to make a single history intelligible depends on a refoundation of dialectics as research method for concrete historical reality. Starting by such refoundation, it becomes possible to define the epistemological basis of a historical structural anthropology, and the conditions for the insurgence of human collective action at the same time. In our interpretation, this approach is out of a future perfect's logic that means out of the core of the modern sovereignty's system. Once fixed those points, the research moves around two principal problematic axis. The first evaluates the methodological and epistemological accuracy of Sartre's attempt to formulate a theory of knowledge for Marxism, considering this one as a theoretical-practical experiment yet to be done. At this point, Sartre's regressive-progressive method is compared to Marx's method of critique of political economy, evaluating affinity aspects and overcoming lines. Around the second axis, transverse to the first, the more properly historical-political plexus finds its profile: the dialectical comprehension of events connoting subjectively (that means politically) historical time's flow isn't detachable from questioning about the historicity of subjects involved in this flowing. For this reason, in the Sartrian thought of the Sixties the subjectivity's status is analyzed questioning the normative disposition of social sphere: focusing on normativity allows to understand the mutual implication of subjectification and objectification, in addition to locating basis for a Marxist axiology. Moreover, this perspective allows to improve historical effectiveness of praxis's ethical dimension. This one is the lens by which Sartre analyzes both Stalinism and colonial liberation struggles, but also the point of clarification of the torsion he imposes to the notion of longing. Materialistically, with the longing Sartre discovers the root of an ethics as the necessary step for every politics.
