The relationship between professional and social media is multi-dimensional and characterised by complementary developments. Journalists use social media as research sources, and social media can sometimes generate Twitter events of unprecedented scale and scope for classical media. Social media discourses are marked by a new form of expression of opinion and democratic formation of opinion. Content is generated by "citizens who engage through commenting", important characteristics of discourse and content are the immediacy of communication (concerning time as well as intermediary control entities), interconnectedness and re-usability of contributions and a sinking threshold for publication (publishing sector vs. Bloggers). In his article, Volker Lilienthal addresses the question of whether these developments contribute to the gradual substitution of professional journalism through social media. Due to the limited will to get involved (on part of the citizens) and the thematic narrowness of social media discourses ("hobby activity"), the authors argues that such substitution is not currently in train. However, (possible) pressure from the audience has already led, and will continue to lead, to significant changes in the practice of professional journalism. Adapted from the source document
