The atlas uses maps, charts and analysis to illustrate, trends, challenges and measurement issues related to each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The Atlas primarily draws on World Development Indicators (WDI) - the World Bank's compilation of internationally comparable statistics about global development and the quality of people's lives Given the breadth and scope of the SDGs, the editors have been selective, emphasizing issues considered important by experts in the World Bank's Global Practices and Cross Cutting Solution Areas. Nevertheless, The Atlas aims to reflect the breadth of the Goals themselves and presents national and regional trends and snapshots of progress towards the UN's seventeen Sustainable Development Goals: poverty, hunger, health, education, gender, water, energy, jobs, infrastructure, inequalities, cities, consumption, climate, oceans, the environment, peace, institutions, and partnerships. Between 1990 and 2013, nearly one billion people were raised out of extreme poverty. Its elimination is now a realistic prospect, although this will require both sustained growth and reduced inequality. Even then, gender inequalities continue to hold back human potential. Undernourishment and stunting have nearly halved since 1990, despite increasing food loss, while the burden of infectious disease has also declined. Access to water has expanded, but progress on sanitation has been slower. For too many people, access to healthcare and education still depends on personal financial means. To date the environmental cost of growth has been high. Accumulated damage to oceanic and terrestrial ecosystems is considerable. But hopeful signs exist: while greenhouse gas emissions are at record levels, so too is renewable energy investment. While physical infrastructure continues to expand, so too does population, so that urban housing and rural access to roads remain a challenge, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Meanwhile the institutional infrastructure of development strengthens, with more reliable government budgeting and foreign direct investment recovering from a post-financial crisis decline. Official development assistance, however, continues to fall short of target levels

"The Routledge International Handbook on Social Development, Social Work, and the Sustainable Development Goals answers the question: What is the contribution of social development and social work to the Sustainable Development Goals? The success of the SDGs requires implementation, and each of the 17 objectives for sustainable social progress have a social dimension. The SDGs, like the MDGs before them, were born of a larger social development movement which over the last 25 years has become increasingly mainstream in the fields of international development, sustainability, and social work. These practitioners are essential to the implementation of the SDGs. This handbook examines how the SDGs are being implemented in diverse contexts. No previous work has surveyed social development and social work's contribution to the SDGs nor represented voices from the Global South on the SDGs. This book broadens the current literature by focusing on key sites throughout the Global South and featuring underrepresented voices from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. These regions are vitally important to assessing the SDGs, as this is where innovative social development projects are occurring, and where social workers are playing a leading role in achieving the SDGs. Divided into eight parts: - Context of Social Development, Social Work, and the SDGs - Perspectives on the SDGs - Case Studies on Engagement with the SDG Agenda - Case Studies on Ending Poverty - Case Studies on Health and Wellbeing - Case Studies on Gender Equality - Case Studies on Climate and Sustainability - Case Studies on Governance, Peace, and Justice and comprised of 35 newly written chapters by 74 authors, it will be of interest to a broad interdisciplinary audience of scholars, educators, and students in the fields of social development, social welfare, social work, social policy, human rights, international relations, political science, international affairs, sustainability, community development, area studies, and development studies"--
"This book uses spatio-temporal analysis methods to understand urbanization in Indian cities and explain the concept and impact of global greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). It creates a GHG footprint for Indian cities and engages in a discussion about the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Smart Cities initiatives within an Indian context. Highlighting some of the best practices and tools being used for modelling urban growth through case studies, the book is useful to those interested in using new technologies and methods for data collection and problem solving. It focuses on the major environmental issues in India, which are prevalent in most developing countries"--
"The promotion of economic development is a recurrent area of interest, both in the policy ground as well as in the academic arena. Developed and developing countries are aware that there are pending issues to be solved. Trying to offer a response to some of them, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations balance social, economic and environmental factors which are in turn the pillars for sustainable economic growth. In this context, social changes, innovations, and technological advances would play a crucial role. But the needed changes require adequate economic policies aimed to promote sustainable economic development. Joint to this, the past financial and economic crisis has questioned the usefulness of several paradigms accepted by the academy and has also favored the research on economic policies. In the current globalized world, the new approaches to conduct economic policies, and the practical lessons that emerge from empirical analysis, are revealed as necessary tools to understand international economic relations. In this book, we provide some contributions that show the most recent approaches showing to which extent economic policies would overcome a sustainable economic development. First, we will review the current situation and the perspectives of development theories and policies. Next, we will show the scope of both demand-side and supply-side policies, when trying to achieve economic development. Finally, we will show several examples of how developing countries from the Latin America area are dealing with the current situation after the economic crisis, in light of the Sustainable Development Goals. Our results provide a vast and comprehensive analysis of the situation, the perspective and the proposals for the future of the economic policies for development."
"Governing the Interlinkages between the SDGs: Approaches, Opportunities and Challenges identifies the institutional processes, governance mechanisms and policy mixes that are conducive to devising strategies of integrated Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) implementation. The book edited by Anita Breuer, Daniele Malerba, Srinivasa Srigiri and Pooja Balasubramanian examines the dedicated policies targeting the SDGs, as well as political and institutional drivers of synergies and trade-offs between the SDGs in selected key areas - both cross-nationally and in specific country contexts. Their analysis moves beyond the focus on links between SDG indicators and targets. Instead, the book takes advantage of recent evidence from the initial implementation phase of the SDGs and each chapter explores the question of which political-institutional prerequisites, governance mechanisms and policy instruments are suited to accelerate the implementation of the SDGs. The findings presented are intended to both inform high-level policy debates and to provide orientation for practitioners working on development cooperation. This volume will be of great interest to practitioners and policy makers in the field of sustainable development, as well as academics in the fields of sustainability research, political science, and economics"--
