This article discusses différent aspects of migration and health in Swedish 19th century urban environments. The décliné in urban mortality set in during the last decades of the century, at the same time as Sweden rapidly became more urbani-zed. The relation between population increase and mortality was however not that clear. The article analyses mortality among migrants in comparison with the more permanently resident population in two Swedish towns-Sundsvall and Linköping. People with another origin than the town of Sundsvall had much better survival than the others. A possible explanation for this is that the migrants were brought up in a much healthier environment than those that spent their childhood in the urban environment, and that the better health in adulthood partly was a resuit of these long-term effects. For illegitimate children, however, their mother's back-ground as migrants had a negative effect. The unmarried migrant mother's lack of social network and support made the survival of their children low.

From Silent Films to « Talkies »: The Birth of the Cinematographic Quality in France during the Interwar Period
Fabrice Montebello
The identification of motion picture industry as a "national wealth" at the beginnung of the twenties, went with the transformation of the film, from a good sold by the metre (used mainly by public houses, music-halls, third-rate theatres, popular cafes) to a cultural object, praised as a means of a quality entertainement, morally unquestionable. This changing operated through the implementation and diffusion, under the joined pressure of the State, the professionals and the audience, of instruments of measurement of the cinematographic quality (censorhip certificate, film nationality, standard play, cinema performance, moral ratings, reviews, artistic and historical categories). It has been made possible by the progressive substitution of the talking movies market to the silent films market and by the national standardisation of the cinema entertainement which resulted from it.
This work is focused on some filmmakers considered as "Critical Witnesses". I will define the designation "Critical Witness" from Walter Benjamin's writings about history and cinema. The philosopher has highlighted the necessity to politicize these two domains. But two approaches seem to characterize the idea of politicizing both history and art. On the one hand, Benjamin defends a critical historiography which actualizes the past: what he names the "dialectical image" represents the encounter of "what-has-been" and "now". Such a practice can be assimilated with the operation of montage, which in Benjamin's thoughts is meant to provoke a shock in order to change the present time. On the other hand, the politicizing of art is quite different. To a large extent, Benjamin considers cinema's ability to serve revolution in another way: using the means of film, the filmmaker should investigate and reveal new aspects of reality: his or her goal is to raise awareness. The Critical Witness refers to the filmmaker whose approach corresponds to Benjaminian imperatives, at the junction of these two approaches of politicization. From this perspective, the analysis will focus on a few works from Peter Watkins, Agnès Varda, Chris Marker, Chantal Akerman and Claire Angelini. Using the means of film, these essayists collect testimonies, connect past to present, bringing barbarism and its continuity to the spectator's consciousness.
