This study aims to summarize and expand the results of the most recent national and international surveys on teachers of STEM disciplines in Italy, regarding to the following aspects: 1) personal profile, 2) initial and in-service training, 3) didactic practices adopted, 4) school environment. By comparing and elaborating the data collected on samples of Italian teachers from the 2016/17 National Surveys of INVALSI, from PISA 2015, from TIMSS and TIMSS Advanced 2015, from TALIS 2018, and comparing STEM teachers with teachers of humanities, we highlight that: a), among the first, the feminization of the Italian teaching staff is less marked; b) in the primary school the percentage of graduates is lower; c) in the middle school, science teachers update less than mathematics ones; d) in the high school the percentage of those who have received specific training for teaching is lower; e) the frequency of inquiry-based teaching practices, among other practices, is the one that most negatively departs from the average frequency of the OECD countries; f) there are no statistically significant differences between STEM teachers and the other teachers regarding their relationship with the school environment. This analysis suggests the adoption of policies for the insertion in the primary school of graduates teachers, especially in the scientific field, the promotion of a wider initial and in-service training, which includes and incentives a more solid pedagogical preparation also for teachers of the STEM disciplines.
This paper analyzes the issues related to the establishment of an academic fashion course in our age of complexity. It shows the transition from studies focused on the analysis of the fashion object, with reference to the history of costume and the history of art, to studies focused on the complex of productive, cultural and communicative activities that established the current fashion system. It also shows the correspondence of the course launched at the University of Milan with respect to the so-called "Triple Helix" cultural policy. It therefore refers to the connections among the three poles of the virtuous exchange relationship: first, the university, with its research centers and scientific and educational activities; secondly, the world of work, with the relationship with representatives of companies and various entities in the fashion world, as well as the promotion of internships; finally, the third pole consists of the national and European government and the various initiatives to support innovative aspects and sustainable fashion.
The paper presents a pedagogical approach to civic education characterized by the combination of the dialectical (or Socratic) method and theatrical techniques and then it reflects on the effectiveness of the teaching approach in the light of its experimentation in the classroom with students. The teach-ing strategy was developed within the European project Forming active European Citizens through the dialectical method and theater (EAR) in order to promote the skills, attitudes, knowledge and values mentioned in the Competence Framework for Democratic Culture published in 2018. The contribution focuses on the discussion of the results of a participatory actionresearch carried out in two Italian Comprehensive Schools, demonstrating how the EAR teaching methodology has contributed to consolidate and develop some important citizenship competences, in particular inclusive cooperation, empathy, active listening and civic-mindedness.
The role of teachers is recognised as crucial to the quality of education and student learning. Ensuring and improving the quality of their professionalism is therefore essential. Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is critical to achieving this goal. This paper explores the CPD in Italy by analysing the results of the latest Teaching And Learning International Survey (TALIS) conducted by the OECD in 2018. After highlight- ing the relevance that CPD assumes in the Italian context, the paper examines the survey results and compares them with European and OECD countries. The contribution analyses participation rates, types of activities, content, and areas for which teachers express the greatest need for development. The paper also explores the impact of CPD, characteristics of the most effective activities, factors perceived as barriers to participation, and support measures received by teachers. Finally, it discusses the findings that emerged and outlines possible perspectives that can guide and improve policies related to CPD and the choices of those who design and implement it.
The Urban planning needs a cyclical disciplinary renewal to respond adequately to the transformations of the society within which it operates. The last twenty years have been characterized by substantial changes in relationship to new urban and territorial issues. In particular, the new urban question, analysed by Bernardo Secchi, focuses on three aspects that are as critical as they are fundamental for the city of the new millennium, namely climate change, accessibility and urban safety. Moreover, there are also procedural and operational changes, as well as the evolution of stakeholders: this leads to the need for more flexible training courses and more effective teaching methodologies. In the professional field, the planner has always encountered obstacles in his work, also in relation to an operational rivalry with engineers and architects. The official recognition of the urban planner's work took place only in 2001, renaming the Order of Architects into "Order of Architects, Planners, Landscape Architects and Conservators". A few months ago, the CNAPPC defined a reform plan that once again places the architect in a generalist perspective, as an expert in all spatial issues at any scale and in any field, effectively making urban planning, like other disciplinary sectors, a post-graduate specialization to be entrusted to work experience in the field. In foreign countries, on the other hand, although there is still a certain overlap of skills with traditional architects and engineers, the figure of the urban planner appears to be widely recognized, in the professional sphere, within public bodies and in specialist and private consultancy. The skills of this figure range from site planning to urban design, from territorial analysis to the application of programs and policies that include social participation and the use of information technology and the treatment of big data. This issue of the TRIA magazine aims to explore the theoretical ideas of the XII INU Study Day dedicated to teaching urbanism and planning, through reflections and suggestions for the training of urban planners.

One of the fundamental aspects of the contemporary educational research is the question the inclusive school referred in particular to the inclusion of the students with disabilities and the role of digital teaching to promote inclusion. This is a complex question which requires analysis, new experiments and, above all, new scientific hybridizations to deeply understand the phenomena. Tis issue is fundamental for an hypothesis which analyzes a better social justice in the democracy. In this article we will try to connect the relationship between inclusive school, digital teaching and Artificial Intelligence. Advances in Artificial Intelligence could represent the birth of a new inclusive educational paradigm for schools.
The opportunities for teachers to specialize and undertake advanced courses opens the debate on the importanceand training priorities of in-service teachers. Starting from a theoretical framework, this contribution aims tohighlight an analysis of the training practices of in-service teachers declared in the Tree Years training plan of100 lower secondary schools (randomly extracted for each geographical macro-area). The data collected refer toa qualitative-quantitative design for a broader research of national interest, which has as its purpose the definitionof a curriculum of moral education in lower secondary school. The analysis – carried out using the NVivo software– made it possible to identify the contents of the main forms of teacher training (e.g. digital skills, key andcitizenship skills, safety, evaluation, innovative teaching) in relation to their ethical importance, in line with thecreation of a democratic society.
The first part of this report describes an educational aid kept at the Museo dell'Educazione of the University of Padua, a synoptic table entitled Da Romolo a Mussolini. It shows several peculiarities of the educational policy of the fascist regime, above all the method and the aims of the teaching of history. The second part, starting with some epistemological reflections, presents a potential use of this educational aid for the study of the Italian Risorgimento. It shows the distortions of the regime's historiography and places the Italian history in the international context; but it also remembers that this historiographic and educational method began in Italian schools only in the second half of the last century.
; Nowadays it is extremely important to experiment innovative teaching methodologies aimed at facilitating the acquisition of a global communicative competence in a Foreign Language (FL)/ Second Language (L2), also taking into account the most recent European language policies. The starting hypothesis of this research work is that the learner's emotional involvement and the use of different expressive codes, in addition to the verbal code, promote more effective results. We therefore want to demonstrate the advantages of learning and teaching a language by using drama/theatre techniques in specific contexts. In recent years, we have witnessed, throughout Italy, significant changes due on the one hand to globalization and, on the other, at "glocal" level, to the migratory wave that has involved the whole nation e that finds in Sicily, because of its geographical position, a forced outlet. It is therefore necessary to rethink the organization of the learning-teaching process in Italian as L2, in a sociolinguistic, pragmatic and intercultural way and to plan inclusive and wider educational paths that act primarily on motivation and on the lowering of the affective filter. Why then investigate drama/theatre techniques applied to language teaching? Precisely because they represent the winning combination to achieve objectives even outside of schools, in the social sphere. Through laboratorial practices and cooperative strategies, a spiraling educational continuity is promoted in terms of growth and personal autonomy which are linked to the prerequisites for expanding and enhancing transversal skills in ever new and differentiated situations. Dynamic and expressive activities are carried out in relaxing educational environments, starting from body language and physical actions; at the same time, cognitive and metacognitive processes are activated even at early interlanguage stages. This facilitates a more rapid adaptation of foreigners in the host country. In fact, the multi-sensorial, physical involvement promotes an intersemiotic communicative experience which, related to the use of the L2, means opening to the Second Culture (C2) values and comparing the socio-behavioral and pragmatic peculiarities of the two languages in a perspective of democratic coexistence. Theoretical work includes general objectives and takes concrete form in a series of specific objectives by carrying out an analysis of the topics at issue, finally narrowing the research to the Sicilian territory, namely that part of the province of Messina which goes from Capo d'Orlando to Milazzo. In particular, it was decided to undertake action research on the potential of the Glottodrama Method in migratory contexts.
This volume was developed within the framework of the teaching course of Urban Sociology in which seminar activities had been planned to respond to a significant teaching demand: to show students the polyhedral nature of studies and research located within the discipline. At the same time, it was intended to highlight the common heuristic option, going beyond the first impression of a magmatic accumulation of research strands. By involving young researchers, the seminar activity thus was designed not to focus on a specific research topic to be explored in depth during the various scheduled classes but to draw attention to the explanatory value of the territorial dimension in understanding a multiplicity of social phenomena, even where this was not immediately evident and often not adequately recognized. The researches outlined in the volume have the merit of focusing on spatial and territorial aspects of the different social forms studied, contributing to the spatialization of sociological theory. In this reading, the territory emerges not just as a mere background and container for a set of social processes but a dimension socially structured by the forces in play and, at the same time, structuring them.
; The research project that led to the writing of my doctoral thesis had as its main objective that of retracing and analyzing the history of the academic teaching of Pedagogy in the major Italian universities, starting from the pre-unification period until the sixties of the last century, reconstructing with accuracy the mapping of the major university chairs of Pedagogy, to highlight their evolution and their development over time. The first chapter of this work is divided into three parts: in the first one the research investigates how the history of academic Pedagogy has been approached in other European countries, where, with the exception of Austria with the monumental work of W. Brezinka, where the situation is similar to the Italian one; in the second part the three Italian pre-unification states that already proposed the teaching of Pedagogy in their universities are presented: that is, the Savoy Kingdom in Turin, the Habsburg Empire in Pavia and Padua and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in Pisa; finally the last part proposes a quick legislative framework about the teaching of Pedagogy in the various faculties and in the different courses of study. The second chapter represents the most substantial part of the entire text since it examines the development and articulation of the discipline in the twelve universities under analysis, also briefly framing the profiles of all the teachers in charge of teaching; it also presents an initial analysis of the data in each university. With the beginning of the third chapter, the work focuses on the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data collected. It shows the summary graphs accompanied by a critical commentary on the aspects investigated that were considered most important, that is, the geographic origin of the teachers, the age at which they entered the professorship, the training of each professor, the type of assignment, the lesson plans and the pedagogical and philosophical currents embraced by each teacher; finally, the chapter concludes with the presentation of a sketch of the typical professor of Pedagogy in correspondence with four main historical periods: Unification to 1880; 1880 to the end of the century; 1900 to the end of World War II; and the post-war period to 1960. Lastly, the fourth chapter, although shorter in length than the previous ones, consists of a presentation of the creation of a web application related to the research. In this application it is possible to consult all the data collected, that is, both the list subdivided by year and by faculty of the professors of Pedagogy in the Faculty of Arts, and the biographical files of each one, so that they can be accessed remotely by anyone who needs them. This thesis is then accompanied by an Appendix that reports the filing of the numerous data collected. In conclusion, this long-term analysis has made possible a historical and geographical mapping of the permanences and fractures that have characterized the teaching of academic Pedagogy in Italy. Pedagogy was for a long time complementary to Philosophy, included in the Faculty of Arts; only in 1934 the Teacher Training Faculty was born, but the discipline still showed some difficulty in splitting from the philosophical disciplines. Moreover, in the beginning, History and Didactics of Pedagogy were united and the teacher of Pedagogy mastered everything; we had to wait until the Seventies, with the explosion of the number of chairs, to see the separation of knowledge. In conclusion, this work wants to be a first step in the attempt to fill a gap in the history of Italian academic Pedagogy through a global comparative analysis.
; The desire to make the Teaching of Restoration in the degree courses in Architecture more professional and incisive, has led the writer to establish, by means of an agreement, a stable relationship with the Superintendence for Cultural and Environmental Heritage of Palermo, city in which one operates. This agreement was implemented in the Restoration Workshops of the Monuments of the Laurea LM- 4 in Course of Architecture in Palermo and in the preparation of the thesis. Through the analysis of the two cases investigated (Monastery of St. Caterina d' Alessandria, Barracks of the Carabinieri Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa, located in the complex of the S. Giacomo dei Militari) it is specified the opportunities and problems of such relationships, however necessary for a restoration that truly aspires to preserve both the values and the materiality of the heritage, while at the same time protecting the sustainability of the method used.
Bayes' Classroom: Methodological, Epistemological and Operational Notes for a Real Digitalization of Teaching in the Italian School System The gap between the new «digital natives» learning styles and teaching strategies and practices – still very traditional in Italy – is wide. We need to radically re-think the teaching and learning setting, at least, with regard to three fundamental issues: (a) the physical spaces of education; (b) the methodological approaches; (c) the technologies involved in the learning process. The aim is to sketch a possible design for the new digitally augmented education, based on a social-constructivist approach. The analysis of data and evidence related to behavioral and cognitive styles of the younger generations have led us to identify the logic of scientific discovery (in this case, understood in terms of Bayesian epistemology) as the best suited cultural matrix to develop a model of augmented education. In order to illustrate our proposal, we first describe how and why the brain-frame of «digital natives» is different when compared to our Gutenberg-based way of teaching. The second part describes the design of our methodological and technological proposal, and outlines its three step-structure: tool box, cooperative problem-solving, and situation room. The third part provides some remarks on the impact of this approach on the concept of democratic citizenship.
The article presents part of the results of the Teens' voice 2019-2020 survey and, in particular, the analysis of the answers to an open-ended question on the issues for which students leaving upper secondary school declare themselves available for a political commitment. The sample consists of 753 students who were interviewed during the Saloni Campus Orienta in eight Italian cities. The research shows how young people declare that they want to commit themselves to issues of great social value and that they therefore are open to a political commitment linked to the values of the environment and solidarity. This testifies that the young people leaving secondary school have internalized the values of the Constitution. The authors consider this work the demonstration that it is possible to do research even with first-year students and therefore propose an active approach to teaching at the university level.
