This book deals with relations between the West eschatological thinking of the XVth century and the fear of the Turks. It shows how theologians have updated old medieval prophecies so as to interpret the rise of the Ottoman Empire as a sign of the end of the world.--Summary by Classiques Garnier

This book reveals little-known facets on the history of homosexuality in Switzerland. It
is based on a detailed analysis of the revision of criminal law in sexual matters, the
discourse of groups of key actors (lawyers, police officers, psychiatrists, theologians,
homosexuals), as well as the influences of debates in the United States, Germany
and France between the end of the Second World War and the 1990s.

This book contains an edition and annotated translation of the only remaining doxographical fragments written by al-Qalānisī, a Sunni theologian contemporary of al-Aš'arī. The study preceding the edition gives an overview of 9th-century Sunni kalām. It sheds a new light on al-Qalānisī's positions and explains the reasons behind the success of al-Ašʿarī whose school relegated this early period of Sunni kalām.

"The thought and work of the Jesuit Francisco Suárez (1548-1617) is widely acknowledged as the culmination point of the contribution of the theologians and jurists of the so-called School of Salamanca to the development of modern Western law. This collection of studies on the legal work of Suárez explores some of his major forays into the law. Both his theoretical system-building as well as his interventions in practical questions are covered. Next to discussions on the nature of law and its different categorisations, they extend to various subbranches of the law including family law, property law, the law of obligations, criminal law and international law. Contributors are: Dominique Bauer, Daniel Schwartz, João Manuel Azevedo Alexandrino Fernandes, Lisa Brunori, Wim Decock, Bart Wauters, Gaëlle Demelemestre, and Jean-Paul Coujou"--

The Qāḍī Abū Bakr Ibn al-ʿArabī was an Ašʿarite theologian, a Maliki jurist and an Andalusian traditionalist of the fifth-sixth / eleventh-twelfth century. His influence in the Muslim West is undeniable: he is one of the most important figures in the history of ašʿarism in al-Andalus, and introduced kalām books that quickly became references of local teaching, such as the Iršād of al-Ǧuwaynī. He also introduced treatises of uṣūl al-fiqh such as the Mustaṣfā and the Manḫūl of al-Ġazālī. Ibn al-ʿArabī is also the most famous disciple of the latter and one of the first to have transmitted his thought to Andalusian scholars, then to the rest of the Muslim West. Through a critical, introduced, translated and commented edition of his sum of legal theory entitled Nukat al-Maḥṣūl fī ʿilm uṣūl, this present work shows how the legal thought of the Qāḍī is articulated between language and theology
Mathematician, physicist, inventor, philosopher, moralist and theologian, Blaise Pascal escapes any attempt at an exhaustive portrait. This exhibition proposes to enter the work of the author by following the thread of the three "orders" which organize Pascalian thought: the body , around "Pascal's unfamiliar face" but also his early inscription in a Intellectual and scientific circle which favors the blossoming of his genius, reason , which Pascal "geometer" pushes to the extreme point where it encounters its limits; The heart , finally, around the apology of the Christian religion of the Pensees . The autograph manuscript and the first copies of the book, which is one of the treasures of the BnF's collections, will shed light on the singular history of the book, whose pages were collected and published posthumously. Presented opposite the mortuary mask of the author, they underline the enigmatic imprint of this philosopher's hollow presence, which he expressed in this way: "Figure bears absence and presence, pleasure and displeasure"--Translation by BnF
