(DIPF/Orig.) ; Topics of the conference of the German Association of Research in Music Education (AMPF) 2011 were concepts, practices, and political dimensions of music education. The broad discussion about different action theories that is going on in philosophy and the theory of education has also left its mark on the theory of music education. The contributions to this volume focus on the many different aspects of music education: theories of memory and remembrance stand next to reports on empirical research; intercultural themes as well as the relationship between music theory and music education receive attention. Methodological reflections and contributions from the philosophy of science fill out the picture. (DIPF/orig.)
; The author subdivides the complex of military leadership into the categories leadership philosophy, leadership conception and leadership culture. Based on these categories the complexity of military leadership is shown and used for a binational comparison between the Armed Forces of Hungary and Germany. In addition the mentioned subdivision makes it possible to check whether a transformation from a theoretical leadership philosophy to a concrete leadership conception (e.g. laws and field manuals) was possible. Moreover this categories have made it possible to find out in which way leadership conception was realized in the daily life of military leadership (leadership cultures). The relevant topics have been identified by analyzing the negotiations for the European Defence Council (early 1950ies) and by the results of four current studies of military multinationality.
; With a revitalization of antique philosophical questions about the purpose of education, Kirsten Meyer opens in her habilitation treatise places for a systematical discussion, which deals with a fundamental consideration of aims and 'measures' of education instead of determinations of educational tools. Here she encounters explosive and intellectually challenging topics of autonomy, equality of opportunity, human rights and neutrality of the state. The leading thesis, which considers different contemporary Anglo-American philosophical discourses, is that the philosophy of education can't do other than think about the question of a good life in a normative 'impregnation'.
Dazu zählen u. a. ; CSE in Sweden is conducted at state universities in a highly secularized society. Formed by history it stays in tradition of Martin Luther, furthermore Christian realism is important for the discipline. Because of this impact CSE understands itself as a critical discipline and connected to political philosophy. The text illustrates the different areas and questions in the different departments that teaches CSE. It depicts also topics that will be important for the future of CSE, e. g. Environmental ethics, research of human rights, dialogue between Christian, muslim and jewish ethics, and the role of religion in post-secular society.
; This thesis aims to find and describe the main features of the work of Albert Drach in order to connect them with the work of his contemporary, Michel Foucault. In this, I adopt a wide view of all of Drach?s writings and of Foucault?s major texts up to the period of ?The History of Sexuality? from 1975. I follow the main results of American researchers in the field of human geography who stressed the importance of space in this period. There is no doubt about the impact of Foucault?s philosophy on the understanding of the modern era. My question is to what extent Drach as an author of modern fiction described these features of modernity. Where are the connections in topics between power, violence and the law (das Recht)? How are these connections represented in his work, and where do these lines form a connection between this representation and the paradigms of modernity?Starting from these questions, I divide the analysis into four stages: the first presents a close reading of Foucault?s work from about the 1950s to 1975 regarding his philosophy of space. I then attempt to apply the language of space to selected texts of Albert Drach in order to show the way in which he allows space to interfere with the storyline. The main focus here lies in the description of closed spaces and the way disciplinary society works. I attempt to show that most characters in Drach?s writings are encircled or imprisoned in various ways. Their movements are inhibited, and it seems that this is in fact a hidden nucleus in Drach?s writings. A reading of Foucaults two topics of biopolitics and governmentality and a juxtaposition to Drach?s work in this respect shows, that Drach?s focus was the individual body (or the disciplinary body) and that he used only parts of the discourse on biopolitics to criticise legal and political problems in post-war Austria. ; In this essay I take the popularity of the term 'responsibility in everyday language as opportunity to examine its relation to the term 'obligation. Firstly there is a general analysis of the term 'responsibility. Then I discuss three misuses of the term in the context of indeterminism, amoralism, and interactionalism. After close consideration it becomes clear that those uses are general rhetoric deception strategies. They are not bound to the usage of the term 'responsibility, instead, they can generally come up in communicative references to moral claims. The then following analysis of the concept 'obligation, which shows some fundamental similarities to the concept of 'responsibility, also illustrates this. However, ex negative it is shown how a proper recourse of both philosophical basic concepts is possible. Moreover, the differences of those concepts become clear. Despite some essential similarities, the concept of 'obligation is less complex than the concept of 'responsibility. This is why the concept of 'obligation is less suitable as basic concept in the context of some topics of Practical Philosophy. Simultaneously it becomes clear that the question "Responsibility or Obligation?" presents a wrong alternative when it is seen in an excluding sense.
; The present interdisciplinary work deals with migration and integration, while a special emphasis is put on young immigrant school dropouts. Philosophically speaking, the work is based upon the thoughts of J. Carens (1996) who suggests that sensitive issues like migration and integration are best dealed with by combining the idealistic approach (concerned with the ought), and the realistic approach (concerned with the is), so as not to neglect neither the citizen?s nor the immigrant?s needs. Further important philosophical issues are the question of diversity, and its limits and A. Margalit?s approach, in which he propagates a ?decent? society, in which institutions are called upon not to humiliate people. Chapter 2 is concerned with socio-political issues, among others immigration policy, forms and dimensions of integration, the role of the nation state as well as the right and duties. In chapter 3, migration is dealed with on a more personal level. Among others, the consequences of migration upon the individual?s personality, the role of social affiliation and the interplay between adolescence and migration are looked upon. Furthermore, a subchapter deals with the religion of Islam, which many immigrants adhere to. Chapter 4 again returns to philosophy, or, more precisely, to intercultural philosophy which deals with ethical questions such as the effects of globalization upon different countries and communities, the question of intercultural empathy and the capacity to see things from the perspective of others. Chapter 5 is divided into two parts, the first of which focuses on three topics which seem to be especially relevant for modern (immigrant) societies: education, work, and the question of ethnic colonies and their implications for integration. A major point in this chapter are the disadvantages from which immigrants suffer as far as education, housing, and work are concerned, and the measures which can be taken to ameliorate their situation. ; Since its beginning, space travel is examined by different disciplines. Likewise, philosophy has taken a critical look on this activity ever since. Though, until now a philosophic-systematic approach, with genuine 'anthropological' viewpoint, is lacking. This gap is getting obvious, since, after the discovery of the first exoplanets, new 'astro-sciences' (e.g. astrobiology, astrocognition, astrosociology) were established, for which 'the human as space traveler' is an explicit prerequisite, or for which the 'detachability' of human capacities is under discussion. The present master thesis is trying to uncover the necessary presuppositions, for the understanding of the human as a 'space traveling life form', without the narrow-minded perspective of naturalistic or culturalistic approaches. For this purpose, the systematic frame of Helmuth Plessners philosophical anthropology is selected, because, it offers a comprehensive 'species-neutralized' (i.e. it allows to contemplate about humans, animals and extraterrestrials equally, without 'anthropocentric' and 'speciecist' prejudices) examination of the matter in question. To exemplify these frame, and to elaborate in the course of this a philosophic-systematic approach to space travel, which is equally able to conceptualize the spacefaring extraterrestrial without anthropomorphization and to problematize the dealings with extraterrestrials in ethical and political regard, the topics of astrobiology, astroethics and astropolitics are discussed in separate chapters. At last, against all the odds, the approach is to defend as a new 'critical-posthumanist' option.
The author describes the program and organization of the Riverside Church & Corporation in New York City for a German readership, taking German experiences with religious work and life into account. The essay is based on the underlying sociological concept of "welfare production," which deals with the general question of how societal actors contribute to the quality of life and well-being of people. The first section, "Die Kirche und die Firma" (The Church and the Firm), is a standard introduction of the article's subject. It acquaints the reader with Riverside's neighborhood and buildings, denomination, corporate indicators, and the diversity of its congregation. It also includes a brief portrait of its present senior minister, Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes, Jr. This section illustrates the dual nature of U.S. churches as both religious and entrepreneurial organizations. The second section, "Riverside's Angebot—Seelsorge im größeren Zusammenhang" (What Riverside Offers—Pastoral Care Within a Wider Context) explores the mission, goals and day-to-day activities of the Riverside Church. The main topics are its integrative approach known as the "three i's" (interdenominational—interracial—international) and its broad program which centers on worship services and spiritual exercise, including a range of social, cultural, and political activities. The third section, "Der Sonntagsgottesdienst" (The Sunday Worship Service) comprises a description of three frequently mentioned elements to make the worship services of the Riverside Church particularly attractive: the famous sermons of Reverend Dr. Forbes, the church's music program, and the optical setting. The section closes with observations and explanations of the offertory formalities during the Sunday worship services. The fourth section, "Der Einfluß von Rockefeller und Fosdick" (The Impact of Rockefeller and Fosdick) reviews the founding phase of Riverside and the meeting and synergies of its founding fathers, Dr. Harry E. Fosdick and Mr. John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The author argues that these two men exerted lasting positive influence on Riverside's philosophy, freedom of spirit and action, innovative capacity, and high standing. The fifth section, "Die Ökonomie von Riverside: Das 'dreifache t'" (The Economy of Riverside, Including the Three t's") gives an overview of Riverside's resources. The "Rockefeller endowment" and the time, talent, and treasure of the congregation are emphasized as the financial assets and human input of Riverside's work. Highlights of this section are creative money-making, exemplified by the Easter Flower List, and the New Members Plus Program. The final section, "Die dauernde Herausforderung" (The Constant Challenge) focuses on two main challenges for the Riverside Church & Corporation: the cohesion of its multifaceted congregation, and organizational sustainability in the face of external pressure. The author concludes that Riverside is fit for survival thanks to a timely pastoral concept, professional excellence, business acumen, creativity, ability and willingness to communicate, and innovative capacity.
Since the beginning of the 21st century, there has been a boom in environmental documentary films in which the "ecological crisis" is illustrated, for example, by deficits in the food industry and livestock farming, food waste, climate change and biodiversity as well as the pros and cons of genetically modified food. Analysing the political goals and aesthetic strategies of such environmental documentaries was the objective of a three-day workshop at the Center of Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) at Bielefeld University in May 2019. Bridging the traditional gap between cultural studies and natural sciences by bringing together their respective disciplinary approaches was the overall ambition of the interdisciplinary working group: agricultural science and biology focussed on the production site of environmental knowledge, whilst media studies analysed aesthetic methods of communication. Ethical questions pertaining to the value of nature/environment or animal/human life were also discusse. As the conversation between the natural sciences and the cultural/media sciences was the main focus of the workshop, a methodology day was held immediately before the analysis of the films, initially presenting and comparing the approaches to the topic from the standpoints of the various disciplines: biology, agricultural science, cultural science (environmental humanities), media science, philosophy and, finally, from the point of view of the filmmakers themselves. During the following interdisciplinary discussions, the topics included whether films are, and aways should be, aesthetically designed to convey a specific moral message or whether they should essentially be informative. The analysis of the documentaries produced a consensus on the point that there is, in fact, a wide range of sophistication, complexity, aesthetic quality and affective power in the films. The normative question as to the educational role of documentary films, by contrast, proved controversial: Should films present as balanced a pro and contra as possible and inform impartially or should they use moral arguments to take a stance, engender a sustainable community and thus themselves play a political role? The working group paid particular attention to exploring the natural science, cultural science and media science aspects of one particular documentary, TASTE THE WASTE (2010), as the director, Valentin Thurn, participated in the workshop and had agreed to hold a public lecture one evening. All in all, an interdisciplinary discussion of the individual documentaries proved very advantageous and rewarding: When the same film material offers the opportunity, on the one hand, to map out whether and, potentially, how facts are distorted or wrongly presented whilst, on the other, revealing the audio-visual means that are used to control emotions and, finally, uncovering the value judgements that tacitly underpin the piece, the knowledge deriving from the expertise of the individual disciplines flows into a dialogue that is indispensable for answering questions on media practice and social responsibility.
; Concepts of man ("Menschenbilder', assumptions about human nature). Psychological, biological, cross-cultural & religious perspectives. Psychological and interdisciplinary anthropology. A concept of man ("Menschenbild') is the comprehensive representation of assumptions and belief systems about human nature, about how man lives in his social and material context, and about which values and goals he should have in life. Assumptions about human nature are a matter of Philosophical Anthropology and of empirical investigation in Differential Psychology. In more recent times, the traditional concepts of man as formed by religion and philosophy have become increasingly influenced by findings of the advancing biological and social sciences. The conventional distinction between Philosophical Anthropology and Biological Anthropology should be superseded by an explicit interdisciplinary approach. Psychology can make a considerable contribution to this by virtue of its well-placed position as a field of science between those of the Humanities, Social Sciences, Biology and Medicine. The book has five main topics: (1) Concepts of man in Psychotherapy and Psychology, for example, Sigmund Freud, Erich Fromm, Viktor Frankl, Burrhus F. Skinner, and concepts from personality research and social psychology such as subject models, self theories, and attitudes. (2) Concepts of man in Biology and Neurobiology: genetics, descent of man, primatology, and brain research. (3) Concepts of man in Social and Intercultural Perspectives. (4) Concepts of man and Religion: Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Chinese Religion; social surveys on religious beliefs, religious attitudes, and spirituality. (5) Ways of Enlightenment: Concepts of human dignity and human rights, assumptions on human nature and religiously motivated conflicts of value, religious belief and reason, pluralism and tolerance, covert anthropological assumptions and their consequences. — Concepts of man and their important aspects are outlined in 25 chapters. With respect to religious beliefs, findings from representative surveys in Germany are reported. A particular study by the author was conducted in 800 students to assess their attitudes toward such topics as evolution or creation of mankind, belief in forms of post-mortal existence, belief in god, theodicy, atheism, interest in religion and questions of life's purpose and meaning, supernatural (parapsychic) relationships, a dualistic or monistic conception of brain and consciousness (mind-body), and free will or determinism. The diversity of belief systems about human nature is such that a unified theory of man with which to accommodate the inherent contradictions of these systems appears impossible to achieve. This pluralism may be attributed to the continuing process of enlightenment and secularization and to freedom of religion. This development is being fostered by the growth in knowledge about inter-cultural and inter-religious diversity. The process of enlightenment is therefore a central theme with a number of key aspects: coping with pluralism, definitions of tolerance and intolerance, reason and belief, fundamentalism and superstition. Psychologically, the ability to take different perspectives and to tolerate ambiguity as well as having a low trait level of authoritarianism and ethnocentricity appear conducive to higher tolerance in thinking style. Pluralism may often lead to religiously-motivated value conflicts, but it does not necessarily result in a relativism of basic ethical norms. The religious foundation of morality is being replaced by secular and universal principles such as dignity of man, human rights, and the concept of World Ethos ("Weltethos'), especially the Golden Rule which is acknowledged as a valid principle in many cultures. The aims of this book may be summarised in two points: The differential psychology of concepts of mind ("Menschenbilder') requires more empirical investigation and reflection on the practical implications of philosophical preconceptions about mind-body and free will on the way in which psychotherapists, psychologists, and doctors exercise their respective professions. — The controversies on mind-body and free will show that idealistic and naturalistic concepts are mutually exclusive. The principle of complementarity acknowledges however that each of these two approaches constitutes in itself a frame of reference (or paradigm) which in its way is "complete' but captures only one aspect of the very broad notion of human spirituality and biological nature. ; Since the beginning of the 21st century, there has been a boom in environmental documentary films in which the "ecological crisis" is illustrated, for example, by deficits in the food industry and livestock farming, food waste, climate change and biodiversity as well as the pros and cons of genetically modified food. Ethical questions pertaining to the value of nature/ environment or animal/human life were also discussed. During the following interdisciplinary discussions, the topics included whether films are, and always should be, aesthetically designed to convey a specific moral message or whether they should essentially be informative. All in all, an interdisciplinary discussion of the individual documentaries proved very advantageous and rewarding: When the same film material offers the opportunity, on the one hand, to map out whether and, potentially, how facts are distorted or wrongly presented whilst, on the other, revealing the audio-visual means that are used to control emotions and, finally, uncovering the value judgements that tacitly underpin the piece, the knowledge deriving from the expertise of the individual disciplines flows into a dialogue that is indispensable for answering questions on media practice and social responsibility.
; Sustainable development facilitates a permanently pursuable development which is within the ecological earth system. Through the worldwide population growth, the increasing wealth and unsustainable lifestyles the ecological limits are about to be or are already exceeded, so that future generations as well as parallel living generations haven't got the same possibilities to meet their needs as those living in current developed nations. Agricultural production contributes a high share to this threat to and exceedance of planetary boundaries, as in particular the high and further increasing consumption of animal source products has numerous ecological but also social and health consequences. One of the basic problematic aspects of animal source products is the high energy loss during the processing from plant animal feed to meat and dairy products. As a result large intensively used agricultural areas are necessary to feed animals leading to biodiversity loss, greenhouse gas emissions, land grabbing and health problems due to pesticide usage. Furthermore, high water usage, competition between food and fodder, as well as inhumane treatment of animals, and threats to human health by e.g. coronary heart diseases and antibiotic resistance are consequences of a meat-rich diet. Reasons for this high and increasing animal product consumption include personal, social, economic and political as well as structural factors, whereby in the thesis at hand the focus lies on people which are shaped by a Western European culture. Personal and social barriers to a reduced consumption of animal source food mainly include a lack of knowledge, the psychological phenomenon of cognitive dissonance, a lack of consciousness as well as the pressure of social norms. Political and economic barriers comprise the growth-oriented economy, a lack of price incentives for a sustainable consumption as well as an infrastructure which facilitates the consumption of animal source products. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) as part of the so called Third Sector, besides politics and economy, and representatives of the society are a vital player in national and international governance. They are mostly supported by the society or at least by parts of it and can put pressure on political and economical protagonists through public relations activities and other means. Thus, NGOs as potential interface between society, politics and economy are one promising player for reducing animal product consumption. Due to the above named multidimensional consequences of a high consumption of animal source products especially NGOs targeting to protect the environment, improve the world nutrition situation, care for animal ethics and enhance the health status are potentially interested to reduce the consumption of meat, dairy and eggs. However, according to previous studies in Sweden, Canada and the U.S., there is a limited degree of engagement in encouraging reduced meat consumption of environmental NGOs in light of climate change. Due to the multidimensional consequences of animal source products in the thesis at hand the coverage of analysis is extended and includes the investigation of German environmental, food security, health and animal welfare organizations regarding their commitment to a reduced consumption of animal products. Research consists of a material analysis of 34 NGOs, 24 expert interviews with NGO staff and a focus group discussion testing the preliminary results of the interviews, whereby the central element is the expert interviews. Overall the research process complies with the Grounded Theory Methodology (GTM), which is an inductive procedure without fixed expectations regarding the results. In particular, the research questions include, besides the analysis of the current scope of the commitment to a plant-based nutrition, the influencing factors on this scope as well as the kind of strategies of action for a reduced consumption of animal source products. In accordance to the GTM a new model has been developed as final result of the research process which summarizes the findings in a compact core category. As central result of the research the 'model of the weighing of existence-securing' can be presented. In compliance with previous literature it indicates that NGOs as part of the society are dependent on their environment, i. e. on their members as well as public and private funders, but also on parallel existing NGOs, the media and societal developments. This can be summarized under the headline 'attitude of relevant stakeholders' to the theme of animal source products. On the other side, the 'attitude of the staff' of a NGO can be named as influencing factor, as the thematisation of the problematic of the high animal product consumption is also dependent on the importance which is awarded to this topic by the staff members and in how far they are ready to include the topic in their portfolio of action. In case of the support of the topic by both the stakeholders and the staff members of a NGO, a comprehensive thematisation of the problematic of animal source products can be expected from the respective NGO. In the investigation at hand, this is mainly true for animal welfare and environmental organisations. The contradictory case of no thematisation occurs if neither relevant stakeholders nor the staff members of a NGO support the urgency and thematisation of the reduced animal product consumption. This case can be observed mainly for food security and health organisations. If staff members of a NGO are in favour of the thematisation of the problematic of animal source products, but the stakeholders reject such measures, a restrained thematisation can be expected, which is limited to information texts e. g. on the website of the respective NGO. This is mainly for some environmental and food security organization observable. The fourth case, in which stakeholders are in favour of the thematisation, but staff members aren't, is merely true for some environmental organisation in the analysis at hand. The main reason for a restrained plaid for a reduced consumption of animal source products, mainly by food security and environmental organisations, can be detected in the dependence on financial means from the government, donors and members ('attitude of relevant stakeholders'). But there are also factors like the division of responsibility and the competition between NGOs which impede an engagement in reducing animal product consumption, as NGOs refer to other NGOs or are search for own thematic niches. Besides the reasons for the scope of animal product thematisation by NGOs, strategies of the NGOs advocating a reduced animal product consumption has been analysed. These strategies include mainly public relations work in different variants, which is estimated by the NGOs to be highly effective. In particular emotionally created, positively formulated, target group specific and vividly presented campaigns can be rated as effective. In addition political and legal measures like lobbying or representative actions are named by the interviewed NGOs, whereby they don't see any potential for change on the federal level but on regional or provincial level. As next steps for NGOs according to the reduction of the consumption of animal source products, the following measures can be advised: • A survey about the opinions of the members and donators about the inclusion of the above named topic into to portfolio of measures. Particularly this is relevant for NGOs which are not sure about the reaction of their members and donators to their commitment to a reduced consumption of animal product consumption. An analysis of alternative possibilities of the origin of financial means, which minimize the dependence on public funds. Through this change of the origin of financial means NGOs would satisfy their meaning as part of the Third Sector besides politics and the economy and would increase their possibilities of influencing them. • An increased cooperation between NGOs of the same discipline as well as between different disciplines, so that they can e.g. refer to each other within a network. This enables NGOs to follow their respective organisational philosophy and core competences while at the same time allows cooperating with NGOs following a different approach to foster a plant-based way of nutrition. In addition, this creation of networks facilitates an increased competitiveness with the economic and political sector. • The acknowledgement of NGOs possibilities for action as agents of change. As part of the Third Sector besides politics and the economy, NGOs have a high importance in the influencing of social developments, especially on the interstate level. Complex topics as well as – due to the exceedance of planetary boundaries – urgent global topics can be thematised both by small, regional and large, international NGOs. • The continuation of proven measures aiming to reduce the consumption of animal source products, like different kinds of public relations work, is reasonable. In addition, new contents can be included, like e. g. the fostering of a conscious style of consumption through learning facilities close to nature. For an implementation of scientific findings about behaviour change regarding sustainable styles of consumption an improved cooperation of NGOs and research institutions is recommendable. These findings regarding the reasons for the thematisation of the problematic of animal source products through NGOs might be able to be transferred to other topics, which are thematised by NGOs, like e. g. the criticism on air travels. Furthermore, it is conceivable to transfer the findings about German NGOs to other countries, especially Western characterised countries.
