An experiment designed to test the effectiveness of coding experience as a method of increasing interviewer efficiency. 3 groups of interviewers were given different training experiences: (1) customary training only (general discussion of interviewing, consideration of each individual question, etc.); (2) customary training plus completion of 3 practice interviews and discussion of these results; (3) customary training plus four hours of experience coding 'training questionnaires' filled out in plausible fashion (with different types of 'interviewer mistakes') by the author himself. Each group consisted of 20 interviewers, and each interviewer then conducted ten Interviews with randomly selected 'women of the house' in Altoona, Pa. Interviewer efficiency was measured in terms of deviations from interviewer instructions. Results suggest that coding training reduces both (mean - average) error and variability of error more than customary training, and also more than interviewer practice training. K. Geiger.

Sixteen training techniques were rated by experienced training personnel each with respect to 34 training selection criteria. Training personnel tend to narrow their selection criteria to those elements which are administratively and contractually imposed. Educational/psychological principles tend to be overlooked. Selection on training techniques in practice should be on a broader and more systematic basis if the selection is to be properly justified.
