Political, economic, scientific and cultural cooperation between different peoples is growing all over the world, and these ties are inconceivable without translation. Translation is seen as a link between nations, a means of developing and enriching science and culture, and a bridge to mutual cooperation and solidarity. The first theoretical ideas about translation originated in ancient Rome. Aristotle, Cicero, and Goratz, who were fluent in Greek and Latin, argued that words should not be followed in the translation process, and that their expressions should be weighed first and then translated. Later, Bartholomew and Manetti in Italy, du Belle and Malerb in France, Bacon and Dryden in England, Goethe and Humboldt in Germany, and Lomonosov and Sumarokov in Russia expressed their theoretical views on translation.

This essay presents and analyses narratives of professionals who work with indigenous health in Brazil. These narratives discourse on intense and dramatic dilemmas concerning water and bodies. The questions that guided the research were: What happens to health professionals who are directly faced with different concepts of body, health and disease? What happens when health practices occur in the process of translating the very conceptualization of what health is? Are these professionals so subsumed in the world of biomedicine that nothing would modify them from the onset to the end of encounters in which the practices occur in unstable processes of translation? Are agreements established other than those of domination? Are there significant differences between the professionals closer to indigenous contexts and those who do not have this experience?

Ziel des vorliegenden Artikels ist es, Übersetzungsprozesse im Rahmen der qualitativen Sozialforschung sowohl aus der Perspektive der Sozialwissenschaft als auch der Translationswissenschaft kritisch zu beleuchten. Der Artikel versucht – im Bewusstsein des Spannungsverhältnisses – epistemologische Überlegungen mit methodologischen Aspekten und Erfahrungen aus der Praxis zu verbinden. Im Anschluss an eine Beschreibung der wesentlichsten Herausforderungen und Problemfelder werden methodische Leitlinien und Empfehlungen zur Qualitätssicherung ausgearbeitet, die sich als Unterstützung für die qualitative Forschungs­praxis und als Ansatzpunkt für weitere Diskussionen verstehen. Damit soll ein Beitrag geleistet werden, Erkenntnisse aus der Translationswissenschaft in die empirische Sozialforschung einzubringen und Impulse für eine Verbesserung der Qualität von Übersetzungsprozessen in der qualitativen Sozialwissenschaft zu liefern.

This paper explores the conditions under which urban entrepreneurship can develop through art-based interventions. Drawing on two contrasting case studies (Civic City in France, Fieris Fééries in Belgium) and taking actor-network theory (ANT) as a starting analytical point, we outline the tensions involved in the implementation process of such interventions. We focus on the capacity of urban entrepreneurs to engage different relevant stakeholders (artists, local government and citizens), establish connections between disconnected worlds that are likely to challenge existing institutional structures and eventually create novelty. We identify these actors as 'translators'. Research into the role of implicit theories in decision-making covers a broad area ranging from personal to political relationships, and from private to professional life. To date, translation studies have paid little attention to the influence of translators' knowledge and beliefs in the translation process, and even less to the role of implicit theories. In a pilot study with translation trainees, we attempted to reconstruct their theories about translation and discern to what extent these theories influence both the translation process and the translated text. Our results so far show that trainees do entertain initial implicit theories, which can be modified through experience and formal instruction. These initial implicit theories mainly focus on the notions of transfer and change, and do not reflect the complexity of translation phenomena. With regard to the translation process, our analysis of corrections as well as the length and structure of text-production segments suggests that the informants approach translation at a micro level, which may be partly due to the influence of their concept of translation as transfer. My thesis is an analysis of my own translation of a chapter from Dominik Nagl's legal history 'Grenzfälle,' which addresses questions of citizenship and nationality in the context of the German colonies in Africa and the South Pacific. My analysis focuses primarily on strategies that I used in an effort to preserve the strangeness of a linguistic context that is, in many ways, "foreign" to twenty first-century North Americans while also striving to avoid reproducing the violence embedded in language that is historically laden with extreme power disparities.
