In: Strategic analysis: articles on current developments, Band 12, Heft (October 1989) 7, S. 709-730

This paper addresses the following question: why did the Soviet Union, a superpower with one of the world's strongest military forces, have to terminate its military presence in Afghanistan? In searching for answers, the author employs the comparative method of foreign policy analysis, examines some similar conflicts of the past, and develops a set of interpretative propositions to explain great-power withdrawals in Afghanistan-type wars.
