An overview of the US political scene in 2003 is provided. Significant events include the recall of CA governor Gray Davis & his replacement by Arnold Schwarzenegger; the Supreme Court of MA ruling that the state constitution requires the state to license & recognize gay marriage; AL Chief Justice Roy Moore's removal from office after he refused to comply with a federal court order to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments; & Supreme Court approval of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act. The two major issues were the federal budget & the Iraq war. The agenda as set forth in the president's state of the union address is outlined. Controversy surrounding the Medicare bill, trouble with the president's energy policies, & contention between the US & Allies over Iraq are cited. Some remarks are offered on the 2004 presidential campaign & the inception of the Dept of Homeland Security. 1 Table. J. Zendejas
