Broadside advertisement for Norwich University, dated December 1838; announces that the institution was incorporated, "with full powers to confer Diplomas," in 1834; provides general information about the expense of attending, course of study offered, and history of the institution. ; EXPOSITION OF THE NORWICH UNIVERSITY, in THE STATE OF VERMONT. CAPT. PARTRIDGE begs leave to inform the American Public, that the Norwich University, of which he is President, was incorporated by the Legislature of Vermont in 1834, with full powers to confer Diplomas, and possesses all other powers and immunities belonging to Literary Institutions of the highest order in the United States. It went into operation in May, 1835. The said University is the same in principle as the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy, formerly at this place, and afterwards at Middletown, Conn. It is based upon broad and liberal principles, recognizing nothing of a sectarian character either in religion or politics. The great object of its founders is to educate youth for their country—to combine in one, the Soldier, the Statesman, and the Philosopher. In this book, Nathaniel Potter, principal architect of the University of Maryland, chronicles his efforts in conjunction with John B. Davidge in founding the College of Medicine of Maryland in 1807. The College was the forerunner of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Potter delineates the selecting of competent faculty instructors to serve under Davidge as first Dean, and their successful petitions to the Maryland State Legislature for official charter. He also describes in detail the turmoil resulting from subsequent 1825 legislation which wrested control of the University away from the founding Regents and placed it under a state-appointed Board of Trustees.

Tertiary education attendance in Brazil varies remarkably among different population groups. In order to decrease inequalities and increase the proportion of minorities in public universities, many institutions of higher education in Brazil have implemented affirmative action policies since the 2000s. The main objective of this paper was to analyze different counterfactual affirmative action policies at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) based on simulations, measuring the proportion of minorities and the level of academic performance at this institution under each scenario. The current quota policy of 50% for students from public secondary schools, divided between four main groups (non-poor/non-minority; poor/non-minority; non-poor/minority; poor/minority), was shown to be well-designed to promote higher proportions of minorities among the student body. However, if academic performance is also taken into account, the best options would be either a quota policy of 50% divided between poor and non-poor students or a bonus policy based on a linear function of course competitiveness with an average bonus of 6%.
