THE UNPRECEDENTED DRAMA OF RECENT EVENTS IN THE COMMUNIST WORLD RESIDES IN THE FACT THAT THIS HAS NOT BEEN MERELY A CRISIS OF ONE REGIME OR THE DEFEAT OF A GREAT, INVINCIBLE POWER. IT HAS BEEN THE TOTAL OVERTURN OF THE GREATEST POLITICAL UTOPIA IN HISTORY. THE FIRST POLITICAL UTOPIA THAT ENDEAVORED TO PASS FROM THE REALM OF THEORY INTO THAT OF FACTS, NOT ONLY DID NOT MATERIALIZE BUT IS BEING OVERTHROWN IN THOSE COUNTRIES THAT PUT IT TO THE TEST.

The article begins with a discussion of some Christian & secular ideas about utopia. It shows that after the Enlightenment, it became difficult to conceptualize true utopias, while postmodernism has been preoccupied with dystopian visions of the future. The ambiguous nature of utopianism is reflected particularly in science fiction, which powerfully reflects contemporary aspirations & anxieties, & this ambiguity is here explored with special reference to the work of the novelist Ursula Le Guin. 7 References. This article explores the change in meaning of the term `utopia' between 1968 and today. It proposes an interpretation of 1968 based on the connection between utopia and desire; the emergence of subjectivity in history meant a new way of becoming subjects of one's own history, and a new understanding of socio-political change, as including daily life and personal emotions.
