This essay describes Crow beading between 1850 and the 1990s, the tragic disruption of Crow culture and economy after about 1880, and the subsequent increase in beading. The author asks why the art form flourished during such difficult times and goes on to examine policies of the Court of Indian Offenses and several links between beadwork and important cultural values. The author concludes that beadwork gives Crow people considerable pleasure but also strenthens crucial social institutions such as the clan system, concepts of prosperity, andtraditional marriage customs.
The author, inspired by a news story, builds a hypothesis – based on the radical interactionism and narrative criminology teachings – about the stages of the radicalization process of a young Moroccan guy over time. The author also claims the importance of starting in schools, residential communities and juvenile criminal institutions, a work to listen and support the dissention, experienced by the teens at risk for radicalization, when it is still in the embryonic phase. This approach could help these guys to progressively get in touch with themselves and with their "inner parliament". The support would focus on analyzing – in a completely confidential space – through which stages and till which level they are involved to initiate an extreme belief system, that supports them in the willful violation of legal and/or social norms effective for everybody who lives in the society.
This paper develops an analytical model to calculate the amount by which individuals are expected to modify their values (the relationship between lifestyle and happiness, as measured by subjective well-being, SWB) and to adopt innovative technologies (to increase the sustainability of production and consumption, measured by the ecological footprint, EF) to allow current and future generations to achieve sustainable happiness (the pursuit of happiness that does not exploit other people, the environment, or future generations). The paper also examines the dependence of these changes on an individual's concern for future generations and on their country's current state of economic development. Individuals in developed countries can change their values by showing greater concern for future generations as well as by adopting new technologies, thereby reducing the required change in values and achieving sustainability at a high SWB. In contrast, individuals in developing countries must rely solely on technological innovation (and to a greater extent than in developed countries), and their concern for future generations is less relevant, with sustainability achieved at a low SWB. Finally, maximising the concern for future generations will make individuals in developing and developed countries coincide in terms of their potential to substitute values for technologies or vice versa, but not in terms of their potential to achieve sustainable happiness.
; The thesis argues that while many planning theories have focused the sight on the social differences, multiculturalism and conflicts resolution, there is not yet sufficient acknowledgement on how these differences can be deeply unsolved and how this weakness could be strongly linked with conflicting rationalities and with a 'cognitive slipping' planes of meaning (Bourdieu & Wacquant, 1992). Especially in terms of inexplicit urban conflicts, generated by not opposite economic interests or political will, but by simply and natural differences of the cultural and behavioral baggage, the cognitive level of understanding between people involved plays a fundamental role in terms of awareness and choices efficacy. So this works wants underlines that the link between planning, governance, institutional adjustments and community engagement is, first of all, a matter of mutual deep and real understanding, rather than new form of tools and policies. Starting from the persuasion that conflicts are an incredible source of unexpected creative solution for urban contexts, planning systems and sharing values, this paper aims to probe how a 'cognitive mobilization' (Dalton, 1984) of a community, for the care and the protection of a common good, can be able to "fight for a right" in terms of acquiring political resource and skills to reach own decisions, and constructing new form of genuine power through education (Dolci, 1974) and culture against a 'dominant discourse' (Gramsci, 2007). Using quantitative and qualitative methods, the author presents two field experiences of insurgent practices in the southern Europe: (1) a traditional Case-Study of a Marine Protected Area in Arrábida, Portugal, to illustrate how a community mobilization, that aims to understand really every form of instance and claim, can realize forms of participation that, first of all, sight problems in term of resources, and then allowed people to work democratically together building new and shared solutions able to modify deeply an institutional plan that, due to a displacement between powers and values, generated forms of conflicts between stakeholders, especially in terms of economic and decision making point of view; (2) a case of Participatory Action Research in the Simeto river valley, Italy, where local communities through a strong mobilization were able to defend and took care the river, the biggest in terms of basin in a scarcity water territory, threatened by the institutional choice to collocated an incinerator in a valley strongly based on agriculture, for its economic sustenance, and deeply linked with the landscape, for its recognition and sense of belonging to . This understanding, it is suggested, has important implications for both planning theory and practice. Choosing a multi-disciplinary approach, this work attempts to explore if and how it is possible to transform the antagonism between enemies in competitive spirit among subjects, different for nature and culture, focusing on respect and mutual learning and on the building up of processes really inclusive and choices really shared
The areas on the banks of Garda Lake are characterized by the presence of many castles and military defensive facilities watching the lake from the top of the mountains. Every shore of the Lake shows his belonging to different ancient supremacies. That is evident because the various lakefronts have unique, architectural and morphological details and this radically characterizes the local landscape although the Lake has the rule of a linking element for the territory. Coming through the analysis of the topic concerned on military facilities and studying the scope that fortifications have had from the moment in which they have been built till today, it is possible to understand which enhancement and protection strategies are employed now. Going backwards supremacy facts, old military engagements and battles among the conquerors on the Lake banks, on which there is a plenty of documents, it is feasible to define the new political orders that have defined the fortifications future. Therefore, if along the Verona coast the military facilities have been swamped with modern artillery making end to the Scaligero domination, on Brescian coast the fortifications loss their importance under the "pacific" Venetian control, becoming useless and people weren't sensitive to maintain them. The city walls have been destroyed and also the houses inside their perimeter. The fortified towers were turned into churches bell towers, the constructions and free areas were converted to new recreational and useful purposes such as squares, city halls, community centers and also cemeteries. At the beginning of XXth century above Venetian coast, urban development and tourism were braked by city walls and politicians would destroyed the old walls with the aim to create free access to villages. The possibility to see the lake from the villages favored the foreign industry as the new source of income. The Ministry of National Education restored, in the same time, two very important castles: the Sirmione and Lazise Fortress. These two National monuments became political symbols. The local patriots recognized these old military architectures like icon to remember when Italy was politically free. There were many examples of rebuilding of medieval style and the castles became important tourist attractions. In Brescian area castles and fortifications had a positive fate. In the second half of the XXth century a new interest was born above military architectures. A desire to regenerate these types of buildings supported the decision to call this lakefront "Riviera dei Castelli". The activities carried out by Public Administrations have been gone in the direction of requalification and programmed management of the asset. The specific constructional features, the designs, the similar materials, the degradation issues were been the reason to optimize the work. The solutions to resolve the problems were similar, so the local authorities maximized the financial, planning, human, social resources. This decision was soon recognized and appreciated by Cariplo Foundation and they decided to finance part of the conservation works. At the same time the Polpenazze del Garda city council activated a big conservative plan already started. This project was organized in tree parts. The first step regarded to convert the enclosed spaces into City Council. This operation was careful. The focus of the restoration plan was to recognize the signs of military history with the aim to remember the old political role (in this building the "vicinia" decided the government of the village). The second aspect concerns about urban renewal of the area inside the walls perimeter. At the end, the last activity is the regeneration and development of the urban park outside the walls.
; In the school of globalized society, considering each and every student as a 'culture', education and teaching cannot be but inter-cultural, so the focus of this work will be on the class and above all on those in charge of its management: the teachers. Specifically, the research was motivated by the following questions: what practical, gnoseological and axiological references can be useful for teachers (and future teachers) involved in today's 'global' classes? In order to answer these questions, the research project was divided into four parts. In the first part, through three experiences as examples, we highlighted the main features that make an inter-cultural scholastic training actually democratic. Offering to the students the opportunity to think about the sociopolitical issues and the conditions for civil and civic experiences that will be able to help them, as adults, to live and act responsibly in a world that will become sooner or later their own world, democratic education, according to Dewey's meaning of democracy, adds value to the educational process of all levels. In the second part, following the constructivist paradigm, especially the socio-cultural constructivism, through Gardner and Bruner's works, we proposed the need to develop a multi-centered and centripetal mind for teachers involved in multicultural classrooms, considering each and every student first of all as a unique human being and not as representative of a specific religion or affiliation. Furthermore, we supported the idea of identity as a process. Presenting three different types of learning spaces (closed space, why space, further space), characterized by a different degree of inter-cultural democracy, in the third chapter we introduced the concept of liberty-for. In educational terms, democracy needs responsibility but responsibility presupposes liberty-for learning, so the students should be given the chance to move within different educational settings in order to learn confronting themselves with the 'authority'. The last part is about the values. Considering Maslow's hierarchy of human needs, for multicultural educational contexts, we discussed about the idea of humanity as a situated possible a-priori: a moral/ethic horizon of meaning through which a teacher can express his/her professional humanity considering each learner as a given of lived life in need of being understood to understand him/herself. ; Dottorato di ricerca in Relazioni e processi interculturali (XXVI ciclo)
The contemporary society is characterised by a strong presence of different religious expressions, both traditional and new, community-based and individual. Therefore, we speak of a post-secular age in which there is a continuous exchange between beliefs and non-beliefs in everyday life. In this sense, the religious question takes on an increasingly intercultural connotation in the continuous biographical exchanges among people who give different existential meanings according to their own conscience. It is precisely the dimension of meaning, determined by the choice of values, based on a perspective linked to Frankl's existential analysis and logotherapy, that will be the subject of this contribution. In particular, proposing a theoretical approach to the question (also based on empirical studies), we will outline what could be some aspects of Frankl's psychology useful to lay the foundation of an educational stance on religiosity that could promote a democratic and supportive coexistence within an intercultural horizon.
; The thesis aims to investigate the effects that principles/ values product on the constitutional parameter, in order to verify the impact on the legality in terms of predictability and certainty. In particular, outlined the connection between constitutional principles and values, and rebuilit, at the same time, the relationship between values and normativity, we analyze the effects that the logic of values product on the constitutional parameter, emphasizing the impact on the constitutional judgement. So identified the link between principles and values in the functional capacity of the first to realize the fundamental rights, the intention is to point out how the most extensive implementation of the principles-constitutional values could be accomplished at the expense of the law and of legal certainty in a relationship inversely proportional. This would appear evident from the privileged optic of criminal matters, for which the legality, read in the light of criteria of adequacy and reasonable proportion, closed to the needs of the justice of the case, if pushed in excess of interpretation threatens to invade the field of the legislature, the only deputy to make value choices.
The "Symposion" project was launched in 2008 through collaboration between the Centre for the Strategic Development of the Italian Wine Sector (U niCeSV) of the University of Florence, within the framework of the activities of the Culture and Territory Observatory, and the Tuscan Archaeological Commission (National Archaeological Museum of Florence). The project involves the promotion of seminars and conferences, both in Italy and abroad, accompanied by exhibitions and special publications offering insight into issues related to the presence of the vine and wine among the peoples of the Mediterranean area, from prehistoric times up to the present, and analysis of the significance of the close relationship between product, land and culture.
