Letter from Engr. Gumaro Villalobos to Gen. Alvaro Obregón, expressing his liking and endorsement of his candidacy; he also congratulates Gen. Obregón on his MANIFESTO TO THE NATION.
IN HIS ARTICLE (THIS ISSUE) VILLALOBOS ARGUES THAT THE DEMISE OF THE CENTRIST CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS MARKS THE COLLAPSE OF A FACADE BEHIND WHICH THE UNITED STATES HAS CONDUCTED COUNTERINSURGENCY WAR. IF THE FMLN IS CORRECT IN ITS SOCIAL EXPLOSION PROGNOSIS, IT MAY BE ABLE TO CONVINCE U.S. POLICYMAKERS JUST HOW DANGEROUS IT IS TO CONTINUE THIS WAR. AT THAT POINT, LATIN AMERICAN GOVERNMENTS, BUILDING UPON THEIR CONTADORA AND ESQUIPULAS DIPLOMACY, CAN PLAY A KEY ROLE IN GUIDING WASHINGTON TOWARD ENDING A WAR THAT THE UNITED STATES CANNOT WIN.
Correspondence between Mrs. Constanza Villalobos widow of Cárdenas and Gen. Alvaro Obregón concerning the debt the Secretariat of War and Navy owed her for corn that was seized of her during the armed movement.
Not available.
A previous version of a paper presented at the "Translation and the Circulation of Knowledge in Early Modern Science" Colloquium, at the Warburg Institute, London, Friday 28 June, 2013. ; The Spanish doctor Francisco López de Villalobos (1473-1549) shared an interest in translation with fellow humanist physicians like Andrés Laguna or François Rabelais. His Spanish rendering of Plautus's Amphitryon, first published in Alcalá de Henares by Brocar in 1517, was printed again as part of Los problemas de Villalobos: que tracta de cuerpos naturales y morales, y dos dialogos de medicina: y el tratado de las tres grandes y una cancion y la comedia de Amphitrion (Zamora, 1543). As its unwieldy title reveals, this new volume included a large variety of texts. Next to Plautus's comedy the reader could find moral and political treatises, essays on natural philosophy, dialogues peppered with comic stories, and passages that verged on the picaresque. Villalobos's abundant comments to his translation of Amphitryon moralized the plot, provided contextual information, and glossed the medical import implicit in some of its passages. This colourful array of texts is interspersed with autobiographical episodes which displayed his disenchantment with life at the Castilian court where he served, and also hinted at the harassment that Villalobos arguably suffered because of his Jewish converso background. Its tragicomic satura of serious and humorous matter, its combination of poetry, dialogue, narrative episodes and essayistic prose turns Los problemas into a fascinating text that defies categorization. This paper aims to explore how this peculiar admixture responded to a growing demand from an increasing readership that sought to be both enlightened and amused, and how it also coincided with a crucial moment in the early modern canon that pointed to the development of prose fiction as an essentially protean and heterogeneous genre.
33 Pags., 8 Tabls., 7 Figs. The definitive version is available at: http://link.springer.com/journal/271 ; Latent (LE) and two sets of sensible (H) heat fluxes (H ec and H t 2) were measured with an eddy covariance system (sonic anemometer, krypton hygrometer, two fine-wire thermocouples) over grass (6 days, summer 1997) and wheat (7 days, late spring 1999) in NE Spain. The objective was to evaluate a method to correct eddy covariance underestimation due to horizontal sensor displacement, based upon the similarity of covariance loss for both LE and H. First, this assumption was examined by regression analyses of measured lysimeter LE (LE lys ) versus eddy covariance LE (LE ec ) and H ec versus H t 2. In general, regression slopes of LE and H were broadly similar, although this similarity depended upon the atmospheric stability conditions. For grass, LE ec was significantly lower than LE lys , while for wheat there was a close agreement between LE lys and LE ec . Ratios of horizontal sensor displacement to measurement sensor height above zero plane displacement (s:z d ) were about 0.36–0.40 for grass and 0.11 for wheat. A further regression analysis was performed to compare LE lys with corrected eddy covariance LE (LE ecv ) values. That correction significantly improved eddy covariance LE values measured over grass but only in some cases, mostly under unstable (near to neutral) atmospheric conditions. It can be concluded that low s:z d ratios (less than 0.1) are preferable to reduce loss in covariance of LE. If the use of higher s:z d ratios cannot be avoided, the Villalobos method may reduce the expected loss in covariance but only under limited conditions. In these situations other solutions to reduce loss in covariance should be investigated further. ; This work has been funded by the project HID96-1295-C04-04 (Ministry of Education, Government of Spain). ; Peer reviewed
This article presents the unique figure of the Count of Villalobos, Francisco Aguilera Becerril and his significant contribution to Spanish physical education in the mid-nineteenth century. The contribution of this philanthropic gymnasiarch came from the legacy of his practical and intellectual activities in Madrid. The article also aims to show the transcendence of his influence in the development of civil, medical, hygienic, pedagogical and military gymnastics in Spain. The construction of the story is based on a methodology which produces an interpretation of the texts of the period and the historiographical support of the latest contributions dealing with the period of study. The conclusion shows that the figure of the Count of Villalobos has provided a mythological representation which has served to embody the demands of the physical education mission in Spain
We analyze the various forms of humor in the political communiqués written by Subcommander Marcos' (1994-) and in the brief novel Desvanecidos difuntos (1991), which his friend Paco Ignacio Taibo II published a few years before the Zapatista uprising. The two writers resort to absurd and ironic humor and a light form of joking to criticize the Mexican state and point out its responsibility for the violence that has devastated the country for decades. On the other hand, another Mexican writer, Juan Pablo Villalobos, in his novel No voy a pedirle a nadie que me crea (2016) directs his humorous arrows not only against the official institutions that represent the State but also against characters who embody Civil Society. In this way he points out the co-responsibility of the latter in the sad conjuncture of the present. ; Peer reviewed
This study is centered on the symbolism of decapitation in Fiesta en la madriguera [Down the Rabbit Hole] by Juan Pablo Villalobos. This work of fiction proposes a language to refer to the decapitation of the human body as a radical expression of evil will. And even though the figuration of extreme violence is a repetitive topic in contemporary Mexican literature; what captures the reader ́s attention here is the novelty of the narrative focus, which reconstructs a narco-imaginary of evil from a child ́s perspective. As operational image of evil, the representation of decapitation makes us reflect about the inteligible nature of the human being, and constitutes a space of replies againt the politics of abjection located in the heart of the subject, society, and State.
