Since 1996 the South African Truth & Reconciliation Commission has investigated the human rights violations committed during the apartheid era. It was the first truth commission that had the power to grant amnesty to perpetrators who made a full disclosure about their past atrocities. Using data from various public opinion polls, this article inquires how the state repression was perceived during the last decade of apartheid & whether the Truth & Reconciliation Commission can change the contrasting perceptions about the apartheid past held by various groups within the population. 1 Table, 2 Figures, 46 References.
