In the last 40 years, the "Great Sporting Events" such as Olympic Games have gained increasing popularity and, at the same time, increased international importance. The geographical space where major sporting events take place is not a passive container of such performances, on the contrary, the territorialization of mega-events is an expression of political, economic, and cultural interests. Although their duration is ephemeral, they have a very significant impact on a local, regional and global scale. Countries compete to host these events to obtain greater visibility, improve their infrastructure, attract tourist flows, and ultimately, achieve a territorial projection on a regional and global scale. Olympic Games as an instrument of state soft power politics: the case of Winter Olympic Games Sochi 2014 is a work of research that describes how was the international behavior of Russia in the role of the organizer of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games and the consequent use of such great event in foreign policy, with the ultimate aim of standing out politically on the international scene.

One of the main priorities of the agricultural EU policies is to set up valid, reliable and feasible indicators for on-farm welfare assessment. The EU Welfare Quality® project has developed a set of valid and feasible indicators, that have also been tested for inter-observer repeatability. For those indicators, repeatability between different times of survey has already been tested, but always within limited time spans; therefore, we have no information about their long-term repeatability, e.g. in extremely different seasonal conditions. We can hypothesize that more or less marked seasonal variations can occur, depending on farms' geographical location. In order to verify this hypothesis, we collected some welfare indicators, derived from the Welfare Quality® protocol, in 22 dairy farms located in plain, hilly and piedmont areas in Lumbardy, both in summer and in winter. No differences between seasons were found for presence of hairless patch areas, lameness, avoidance distance at the feeding rack (used to evaluate human-animal relationship) and for the other behavioural indicators. The percentage of cow that are too lean was higher in winter, especially in piedmont farms, where the climate is more severe. In fact, a long cold period, with rain, snow and wind, may cause an increase of energy consumption that, in turn, can make cows loose weight. The percentage of cows with diarrhoea was higher in winter, probably due to a reduction of digestion efficiency, induced by low environmental temperatures, that increased the sensibility of cows to enteric pathologies. We may conclude that the geographic location of the farms affected the repeatability of some welfare indicators in different seasons. The present study was carried out in the frame of the EULAT project, supported by Lumbardy Region, and that aims at the valorization of an excellent production chain – in terms of environmental sustainability, animal welfare and nutritional quality for the production of milk and dairy products.

The thesis aims to analyze the evolution of the energy market and understand the influence of digitalization on this process, trying to understand how technology can coordinate with the market and its regulation. Specifically, the discussion is divided into three chapters. The first offers an examination of the European legislation on energy, highlighting the innovative elements introduced by the Winter Energy Package. The second focuses on the new role that citizens can play in the energy market, with particular reference to the prosumer and the energy communities. Finally, the third chapter looks at the use of technology, and in particular of Blockchain and Smart Contracts, in the energy market, trying to understand how these can affect both the functioning of the market and regulation.

In: The science and culture series. Nuclear strategy and technology
"This series started in 1981 with the Erice Seminars when the danger of a nuclear East-West confrontation was menacing the world. The volumes reproduce the crucial steps, from the Nuclear Winter to the Strategic Defense Initiative. After the collapse of the U.S.S.R., new emergencies are now to be faced such as the danger of proliferation of Weapons for Mass Destruction (WMD), the North-South confrontation on ecological problems and the new deal for Science and Technology to help developing countries in their struggle for a better standard of life. The Erice Seminars have attracted the attention of world leaders in Science, Technology and Culture."--Publisher's website

; LabCity Architecture group researches on the topic of regeneration of small rural centers in Sicily, victims of the economic and demographic crisis of the last decade. It highlights the urgency of rethinking new strategies in such places with strong territorial, heritage and cultural potential, and has suggested research-action projects in synergy with the local communities involved. The recent health emergency caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for research aimed at identifying the specific characteristics and needs, especially of smaller towns, often the recipients of inadequate policies and interventions. In this perspective fits the project 'Above the clouds', developed in 2021 by LabCity Architecture on the occasion of the Winter School "Cinema Paradise" in the natural territory of the waterfall of San Nicola in the Valley of Bolognetta, in the metropolitan area of Palermo.

China has the largest construction volume in the world with about 2 billion square meters of new buildings completed annually. Currently about 80% of these are categorized as high-energy buildings and more than 90% of new buildings are considered high life-cycle energy buildings. The speed of construction in China is amazing and it's stimulated even further by the fast rates of urbanization. In order to decrease energy consumption of buildings, there is a need for strong political will and implementation of strict building regulations. China is geographically a vast country and it's impossible to design a single building code for the whole country. Energy consumption per building in China is 2-3 times higher than that of the developed countries with similar climatic conditions, and buildings are less comfortable as a result of poor thermal performance and too little insulation in most of China's buildings. Although the Chinese government has issued many standards and codes in order to improve energy efficiency of buildings, little effect has appeared and less than 6% of newly constructed buildings comply with these standards. China is a large country with a complex climate that in the national standard (GB50176-93) it's divided into five climate zones. Because of the "Qin-Huai line", for severe cold and cold zones, they have central heating system while 14 provinces and nearly half of the population of China is living in the hot summer and cold winter zones (HSCW) where they don't have central heating system. This is the first reason why in these zones heat pump systems play a very important role in heating buildings. Air source heat pump (ASHP) as an optional product has already been widely applied in families and companies. This project reports a novel application of an air source heat pump system for cooling, heating and domestic hot water production in Shanghai for a typical apartment. In winter, the system was aim to solve the central heating problem. The system was combined with a Low-H_2O heat exchanger to decrease the supply water temperature in order to save energy. The heating return water temperature was set at 30 °C, 35 °C and 40 °C for heating in winter which is lower than the conventional air source heat pump system. This system composed by the ASHP and the STDFCU has been tested, from December to February, in an apartment, aiming to the energy saving and the user's comfort. We found, for each experiment, the values of heating capacity and energy consumption and we can say that the heat pump's power is always sufficient to heat the apartment except with the temperature at 40 °C and the internal temperature at 22°C. Moreover, the internal conditions are always good for the users with an internal temperature between 19 and 21 °C. The use of computer software can be useful to simulate the model and to compare results with the experimental's data. That's why we created a model of the whole system and simulated it on EnergyPlus, an energy analysis and thermal load simulation program. Starting with a simplified model, finally we simulated the apartment finding heating capacity of the same order of magnitude that in the experiments.

Between fall and winter 402 the imperial court moved from Milan to Ravenna. Zosimus and Procopius are known to have shown the strategic choice of Honorius about Ravenna, the relevance of which had been growing since the time of the principate when it was the seat of the military fleet in the Adriatic Sea. Archaeological evidence, however, does not confirm continuity between the military port and the regia civitas. Ravenna during the time of Honorius was quite different from the past, and it was badly affected by the dismantling of the fleet which has not been attested since mid 3rd century. Even the new reading of a milestone from Campiano (AE 1975, 402) does not allow to hold this document as an evidence of a not attested unchanged persistence in the city life of Ravenna.
