; Uncertainty has become a central theoretical vantage point in economic sociology. This paper explores the question of whether uncertainty can actually be the paradigmatic vantage point for a sociological perspective on the economy. I argue that issues relating to the social coordination of economic activity, which are the main focus of such an approach, only address a subset of the sociologically relevant questions regarding the economy. Too little attention is being paid to the political and social conflicts surrounding the distribution of economic wealth. To give these issues greater priority in research in economic sociology, we need to alter our perception of the organization of the economy, viewing it as a process of struggle between actors vying to shape economic structures in ways that promote their material and ideal interests. While this proposal is not incompatible with developing an approach to economic sociology based on the problem of uncertainty, it does require that such an approach be put on a wider footing.

Political economy and economic sociology have developed in relative isolation from each other. While political economy focuses largely on macrophenomena, economic sociology focuses on the level of social interaction in the economy. The paper argues that economic sociology can provide a microfoundation of political economy beyond rational actor theory and behavioral economics. Based on a discussion of what I call the four Cs of capitalism (credit, commodification, creativity, and competition), I argue that macroeconomic outcomes depend on the contingent expectations actors have in decision situations. Expectations are based on the indeterminate and therefore contingent interpretation of the situations actors face. This shifts attention to the management of expectations as a crucial element of economic activity and to the institutional, political, and cultural foundations of expectations. The dynamics of capitalist development are precarious because they hinge on the creation of expectations conducive to economic growth.

The paper presents some of the ideas underlying the current research program of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG). It begins with a discussion of how the institute's programmatic orientation has evolved since it was founded in 1984. Programmatic change over the years involved (1) recognition of a secular decline in the capacity of the nation-state to organize and guarantee social order, and of the growing significance of self-regulating, 'free' national and international markets for social life; (2) increased attention to issues of meaning and to 'culture' and cultural symbolism, as well as to normative questions; (3) a gradual shift in emphasis from policy to politics; and (4) more explicit recognition of history and of the historicity of the questions posed and the observations analyzed in social science. The second part of the paper argues that Gesellschaftsforschung today is most appropriately conceived as the study of the economy and society of contemporary capitalism. It is suggested that the most promising approach is close cooperation between the scholarly traditions of political economy and economic sociology, with the former standing to benefit from a more explicit micro-foundation in a sociological theory of action and the latter from more systematic consideration of politics and the state. Third, the paper shows how the approach that has evolved at the MPIfG differs from mainstream economic sociology, from the so-called new institutional economics, and from behavioral economics. The paper concludes by enumerating four subject areas that are likely to be of particular importance for research at the MPIfG: (1) the nature of rational-economic action, (2) the constitution of markets, (3) the emergence and change of institutions, and (4) the relationship between capitalism and democracy.
Despite the ubiquity of illegality in today's financial markets, systematic scrutiny of the phenomenon of financial crime is lacking in the fields of economic sociology and political economy. One field of research in which the illegal behaviors of business elites have long taken center stage is that of white-collar crime research. This paper makes available to economic sociologists and political economists an overview of the most important conceptual insights that have been produced in the white-collar crime literature. In doing so, its aim is to provide economic sociologists and political economists with a conceptual foundation for future research on financial crime. The paper first traces the evolution of the white-collar crime concept. Subsequently, it investigates how white-collar crime scholars have conceptualized the way in which the empirical profile of white-collar crimes has evolved over the past decades and especially how the locus of such crimes has shifted away from industrial corporations to the financial services industry. It is argued that a fruitful avenue for future research on financial crime in economic sociology and political economy consists in studying in more detail the interactions between the changing character of white-collar crime and the broader capitalist dynamics associated with processes of financialization.
; This article deals with the thesis that the democratization of the economy was the key task of our time and how this democratic process can be designed. The Social Society is structured in autonomous self-control and integrated into superordinate systems. What contribution can an organization like the church to bring these systems into balance? Based on assumptions of the New Economic Sociology is transferred from the idea of communicative action to the church.
The article provides an overview of the state of the art of sociological research on price formation. The dominant trait of the sociological approach to prices is to understand price formation not as the outcome of individual preferences but as the result of the social and political forces operating within the market field. The article proceeds from the concept of market fields and is organized around the three dominant approaches in economic sociology: the network approach, the institutional approach, and the cultural approach.
DIIS Working Paper reviews a recent influential branch within the Social Studies of Finance literature which asserts that financial markets are embedded in economics rather than in soci-ety (as scholars of the New Economic Sociology would have it). Coming from actor-network theory, the literature contributes conceptually to an extended ontology of markets and agency and empirically to an improved understanding of the importance of economist's role in con-structing markets and assembling economic agency. It also draws attention to the staggering effects that material devices and technical 'details' can potentially have on the macrodynamics of financial markets. In some cases financial markets can even be performed by economics, that is, materialized in very close accordance with the economic models that describe them. From this insight they conclude that economics is a performative science and that the social sciences should consequently break down the Great (analytical) Divide between finance the-ory and financial markets. However, the review finds that the literature is marked by a methodological bias. The lit-erature works with the microsociological methods of actor-network theory and thus tends to deliver pragmatically adequate explanations of the unique local social orders observable in 'the financial laboratory'. This means that it has its primary focus on the mutual entangle-ments of 'universities' and 'markets', that its preferred protagonist's are the economist's and that its privileged object of analysis is economic technology. Its pragmatic outlook also gives it a preference for 'market success' rather than failure and it often exaggerates the capacity of economist's to perform markets. It tends to forget the role of politicians, political technolo-gies, macro actors such as the state and international organizations not to mention the global asymmetries connected with the political economy of financialized capitalism. Although the performativity tradition must be seen as a further analytical development of Foucaults knowl-edge-power nexus, in particular his concept of 'dispositif', its focus on studying the 'labora-tory' (situated social practices) disregards the historical paradigmatic forms of the 'archive' which also condition financial agency. A fruitful dialogue between the pragmatism of perfor-mativism and a historically oriented poststructuralism inspired by Foucaults dispositif analysis is called for in the future course of Social Studies of Finance.
The concept of embeddedness plays a central role in the segment of economic sociology and social theory which is inspired by the works of Karl Polanyi. But to the extent that embeddedness is understood in a substantialist manner, implying the existence of a unitary lifeworld, the desire for embeddedness is an impossible aspiration under modern conditions. Throughout the modern era it is however possible to observe the emergence of complex societal stabilization mechanisms, which serve as substitutes to traditional forms of embeddedness. The emergence of function specific cultures, in the form of, for example, legal, political and scientific cultures, establishing a 'second nature' in the Hegelian sense, is one example of this. Other examples are (neo-)corporatist institutions which fulfilled a central stabilising role in classical modernity and the kind of network based governance arrangements which fulfil a similar position in today's radicalised modernity.
; Tourism under an economic sociologic point of view: The travel of Asian tourists to and in Germany Tourism is a phenomenon that is subject to different disciplines of research. The presented research focuses on an extract of world wide tourism under an economic sociologic point of view: The travel of Asian tourists to and in Germany. A special target group is dealt with in particular: Young individual tourists from Asia, actually from Taiwan, Hongkong, Japan and South Korea. Different theoretical approaches that are important under tourism sociologic aspects are referred to. In addition, series of interviews, questioning 288 guests from the above mentioned countries who staid in youth hostels are analysed. By looking on tourism under an economic perspective, Germany's ranking on the world tourism market as well as the sector's importance for the national economy is presented. Incoming-tourism is of secondary importance, but the number of tourists from Asia, travelling in Germany, increases every year. With regard to the "modernisation theory" it is shown that in a modernising world leisure time in general and travelling in particular gain importance. In addition, travelling is one kind of realizing a modern life style. A journey to Europe for (young) Asians can also be considered as a component of a "good and complete" education. The concept of heterogeneity assumes that non-insiders of a society are very sensitive towards this society that is "strange" to them. Humans show different levels of stability in their picture of "the others" and "the other". A summary of existing pictures of Germany and the German people is presented. A validation of the 288 travellers' pictures - based on this summary about what is typical for Germany - is undertaken. It can be seen that their estimation is - in line with theory - dominated by the images "tidy, diligent and clean". Their abstract judgements are partly verified by their concrete experiences. An important subject in tourism research is "authenticity". The theory shows that not all tourists put the same emphasis on their request for authenticity. What is regarded by the Asian interviewees as "real German" and therefore considered as "authentic" is explained in detail by sorting the answers under predetermined categories. The category "economy" is dominated by the car brands "Benz" and "BMW". In the category "music" Bach and Beethoven are the most well known and Goethe is known as THE German Autor. The chapter on tourism policy shows in which way various actors on national and international level influence the touristic scene. For Germany as destination of foreign tourists the German Office for Tourism (Deutsche Zentrale für Tourismus) with its branches in the home regions of the tourists plays an important role. As result of this research it can be stated that - even considering alternating economic conditions - world wide tourism is a booming market. Incoming tourism in Germany is more than just a market niche and should by no means be neglected. Asian tourists are gaining importance. Currently, for most of them Germany is still part of a journey to Europe. Consequently, touristic focal points and high-lights are chosen. Classic elements as Munich/Fuessen, the Rhine valley or the Romantic Route show that arrangements concentrating on a theme are preferred. But as the Asian societies gain increasing experience.
