The foundation for UN action to advance the status of F's was laid in the Charter adopted in San Fransico, Calif in 1945. The Commission on the Status of Women is the organ primarily responsible for UN work in this field. A number of internat'l instruments have been adopted on the recommendation of the Commission, the most recent being the Declaration on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, approved by the General Assembly on Nov 7, 1967 by a unanimous vote. Of all the areas with which the Commission has been concerned, the greatest progress can be seen in the field of pol'al rights. Equal educ'al opportunities for F's is perhaps the major problem of many developing countries. Employment of F's raises the question of their dual role & how to combine successfully the responsibilities of a fam & those of a profession or occup. Fam law, closely bound to custom & tradition, is the area where change is perhaps most difficult to effect. The UN sets internat'l standards to be applied at the nat'1 level. It is therefore important to disseminate those standards widely. Considerable assistance in this task is given by nongov'al org's & by interested individuals. The UN hopes to launch in 1968 a long-term program for the advancement of F's in which all UN aeencies will oarticioate. HA.
