THE THIRD WORLD HAS ALWAYS BEEN PRESENT IN THE FIRST WORLD. HOWEVER, TODAY IN THE UNITED STATES WE SEE A REALIGNMENT OF THE THIRD WORLD IN THE FIRST WORLD: A LINGERING APARTHEID IS MORE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE GROWING UNDERCLASS THAN ANY OTHER FACTOR. THIS ARTICLE EXAMINES HOW WE DIVIDE UP THE WORLD AND EXPLORES THE CONDITIONS IN U.S. INNER CITIES. IT SUGGESTS THAT OUR MORALITY HAS DISAPPEARED AND THAT OUR EXCESSIVE INDIVIDUALISM MAKES ALL OF US OUT FOR OURSELVES. IN THE END, HOWEVER, WE CANNOT LIVE BY OURSELVES.

Reviews the trajectory of the post-World War 2 era, outlining the context for the current state of affairs and the challenges to be faced, and considering the prospects of the movements for social justice. Challenges the perception that there is no alternative to neoliberal capitalism and argues that we can indeed articulate visions of a better society. (Original abstract - amended)
