Correspondence between Gen. Plutarco Elías Calles and Francisco Ahumada. The latter requests a referral to Mr. Coppel. He also informs that B.A. José Vasconcelos notified him that he is moving from Hermosillo to Mexico City, but he will try to convince him to travel with him to San Diego to visit Gen. Plutarco Elías Calles. Gen. Plutarco Elías Calles expresses that he will be glad to see him and asks Francisco Ahumada to find out the reason why Vasconcelos is moving to Mexico City. Francisco Ahumada informs Gen. Plutarco Elías Calles that B.A. Vasconcelos did not accept the invitation to go to San Diego, that he was pessimistic since the opposition was losing its strenght and that he was not well received in Sonora. He adds the letter from B.A. Vasconcelos to Gen. Plutarco Elías Calles informing that the situation in the country has worsen but it has improve for the government. He criticizes Gen. Almazán for becoming a civil leader. Regarding his personal situation, he informs that he is not involved in politics anymore. Gen. Plutarco Elías Calles regrets that B.A. was not able to visit him and says that it is unjustifiable that maliciousness and individual desires provoke the failure of ideas such as the creation of the University of Sonora. Francisco Ahumada informs Gen. Plutarco Elías Calles that the war in Europe is coming and that it will cause serious economic, political and social effects in Mexico. Gen. Plutarco Elías Calles replies that Mr. Coppel has not answered his letter and that he considers it is early to give an opinion about the world war since they do not know its range and duration. He believes that, after solving the conflict in Poland, it is necessary to make a peace agreement despite of Prime Minister Chamberlain. He states that if the war gets a bigger dimension, it will be a disaster for the world. There will not be winners, everyone will be defeated. In relation to Mexico, if order and discipline are not established before the European war, the situation will be uncertain. Besides, if the Bank of Mexico does not take the necessary measures for economic stabilization, speculation will cause serious effects. Mr. Ahumada thanks for Gen. Plutarco Elías Calles' commentary and expresses that he believes there will be peace after Hitler finds a solution for the matter in Poland. He informs that B.A. opened an office with his brother in Mexico City. He adds a newspaper clipping with the heading "Reply to B.A. J. Vasconcelos. Students call him an authoritarian." He also says he is sorry that B.A. Vasconcelos is not living in the real world, since he is destroying the hopes of the people that thought he would save the youth in the country. Gen. PEC, quien expresa que le daría mucho gusto verlo, además le pide que averigue qué va a hacer en México Vasconcelos. Francisco Ahumada informa al Gral. PEC que al Lic. Vasconcelos no le fue posible aceptar la invitación para ir a San Diego y que además lo vio muy pesimista pues la oposición pierde terreno día a día y que en Sonora lo trataron mal; le anexa carta del Lic. Vasconcelos al Gral. PEC informando que la situación ha empeorado en el país pero ha mejorado para el gobierno. Critica al Gral. Almazán por convertirse en caudillo civil. En cuanto a su situación personal le dice que se ha alejado de toda participación política. El Gral. PEC lamenta que el Lic. Vasconcelos no lo pueda visitar en San Diego y le dice que es inexplicable que la mezquindad y la pasión hagan fracasar ideas tan nobles como la de la creación de la Universidad de Sonora. Francisco Ahumada comunica al Gral. PEC que la guerra en Europa es inminente y que las consecuencias para México en lo político, social y económico serán graves. El Gral. PEC le informa que el Sr. Coppel no ha contestado; considera prematuro dar una opinión sobre la guerra mundial pues se desconoce su extensión y su duración. Después de resuelto el caso de Polonia, se deberá pactar una paz sobre bases más permanentes, muy a pesar del primer ministro Chamberlain. Lo único que asegura es que si la guerra se generaliza será desastroso para todo el mundo. No habrá victoriosos, todos resultarán derrotados y aniquilados. En relación a nuestro país, si el orden y la disciplina no se establecen antes de la guerra europea, la situación será más precaria; además, si el Banco de México no toma las medidas adecuadas para la estabilización económica, la especulación causará grandes males. El Sr. Ahumada le agradece sus comentarios; considera que habrá paz después de que Hitler resuelva lo de Polonia. Le informa que el Lic. Vasconcelos puso un despacho en México junto con su hermano. Le anexa recorte de periódico titulado "Contestación al Lic. J. Vasconcelos. Los estudiantes al referirse a sus declaraciones lo llaman imposicionista". Le informa que lamenta que el Lic. Vasconcelos siga viviendo fuera de la realidad, pues con ello hunde las esperanzas de los que han soñado en que su genio salvará a las juventudes de la patria. El Gral. Pec lamenta que el Lic. Vasconcelos informará de su acercamiento y de la ayuda que recibió de él, cuya intención fue el bien común, desinteresado y patriótico.
