ROUTES FOR ACTIVISTS OF ASSOCIATIONS IN MARSEILLE: Forms OF RECITS ; ITINÉRAIRES DE MILITANTES D'ASSOCIATIONS A MARSEILLE : FORMES DE RECITS
We present a collective survey carried out by the Women and the City Association in the 1993s and 1994s among women Marseillaise activists from various associations. Most of the women interviewed have a long-term experience of community life. While the low representation of women in political institutions is known, there is less awareness of active participation, involvement in the field of associations that is both sustainable and changing, which these interviews update. Geneviève Fraisse notes how much the "women's question" coincides with moments of crisis in politics and representation in politics: how is the engagement of these women a response to the current political context? ; International audience ; We present a collective survey carried out by the Women and the City Association in the 1993s and 1994s among women Marseillaise activists from various associations.

An examination of the militant career trajectories of French environmentalists, or Green activists, shows that great importance is given to people perceived as experts in these organizations, but also demonstrates that the phenomenon of the "expert-activist" is more complex than it may at first appear. Simple activism, it is argued, has been replaced to a large extent in these groups by professional expertise. Internal conflicts in the environmental movement are caused, at least in part, by differences in the reactive, scientific, & political trajectories of experts. Two main eras of Green activism are identified, the professional approach of contemporary environmentalists, & the strong focus on activism seen in the 1970s. It is very difficult in the current environment to become an expert-activist without the right academic background. Adapted from the source document.

Movement Democracy. Participation at the European Social Forum of Florence, from Links to Networks
Donatella Della Porta
The cycle of protest on global issues that developed since the late nineties has been largely unexpected by social scientists, who had stressed instead processes of social fragmentation and cultural individualization that would jeopardize collective action. Mobilizations on global justice issues were indeed heterogeneous, bringing together activists with different social background and world values. In this article, data coming from a survey of 2.384 activists at the first European Social Forum in Florence will be combined with the results of focus groups and in-depth interviews, in order to investigate the characteristics of the main "nodes" that took part in the protest "net", as well as how activists address issues of diversity. The ESF database indicates, first, the heterogeneity of individual paths in the movement, but also the presence of dense networks. Second, we show how organizational models help to cope with the movement internai diversity, with an emphasis upon a reticular and flexible structure. We shall however also observe the implementation problems of the emerging organizational model, face to "exigent" activists — and fluctuating levels of participation.
