Does Africa have a future? What are the visions, hopes, ambitions and fears of young Africans for the future of the world, the continent, their nation, and their communities? How do they envisage this world and their roles within it? These issues have not previously been explored collectively by Africans because of the enormous challenges and the preoccupation with the present. But Africa must not allow the enormity of the problems to blind it to its past and future. Africa must chart its own vision of a desirable future and therefore young Africans, born just before or after independence, were challenged to reflect on the future of the continent. Many responded to the challenge, which has resulted in this volume containing a number of the contributions. In this book, the voices of a new generation of Africa are heard exploring the future from personal and diverse perspectives. The authors have enumerated the ills of Africa, analyzed the problems and explored the opportunities. Remarkably, despite the daunting nature of the challenges, they were all hopeful about the future. They provided their visions of the future, suggested numerous ideas on how to build a new Africa, and implored Africans to take responsibility for the transformation of the continent. We write to introduce the African Vaccinology Network (AfVANET) as a new network of African research scientists involved in vaccine research and development (R&D) for human and animal diseases. The goal of this network is to promote and build capacity for early phase vaccine R&D in Africa in order to stimulate the development of innovative solutions to combat diseases that affect the continent. This will be achieved by bringing together different stakeholders in vaccinology and related sciences in Africa to identify and prioritise gaps in vaccine development for both human and animal diseases and to promote sound ethics, biosafety, biosecurity and animal welfare practices, facilitate the mobility of students and early career researcher between research institutions and universities in Africa through south-south collaborations and address the gender imbalance in the scientific workforce. The African continent has for decades suffered the social and economic consequences of several infectious diseases. Examples include the recent spate of infectious disease outbreaks as seen with the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) [1], Lassa fever in Nigeria and Liberia [2,3], cholera in some parts of Nigeria [4], yellow fever in Angola, the DRC, South Sudan and Nigeria [5-7] and measles and Rift Valley fever in some African countries [8,9]. In addition, there are continual loses in livestock productivity due to, e.g. African trypanosomiasis, ticks and tick-borne diseases and lack of access to global markets due to the presence of trans-boundary diseases such as contagious bovine pleuropneumonia, foot-andmouth disease and African swine fever. This study focuses on the political identity of African feminism. The purpose is to understand the meaning and the origins of African sisterhood as a identity political project. The analyzing method is content analysis guided by theory. The theoretical framework consists of identity political theories from Harriet Bradley and Manuel Castells. As a supporting theoretical framework the concept of culture relativism and the concept of freedom has been used. The research material consists of publications from an organization called African Feminist Forum. Aim of research is to study how African feminist forum builds and expresses its political identity in relation to traditional western feminist identity. The meaning of African feminism is to tell it apart from traditional western feminism and make theories and ways of activism that are more valid in the African context. In its rhetoric African feminist forum is trying to state what are the threads and ordeals in its near future and at African women's living surroundings. This is how the group makes itself distinctive and executes identity political project. Cultural relativism plays an important role in this because the cultural relativist though highlights the importance of respecting your own cultural heritage. This is especially present in a different kind of understanding related to the concept of freedom.

It argues that the most appropriate entry points for incorporating the African diaspora into the integration project might not, necessarily, be in the formal political structures, although this is important. To the contrary, the most effective and sustainable might be within civil society---that is the links between the peoples and organizations of Africa and the diaspora. The question, who is an African? in the context of understanding African identity has biological, historical, cultural, religious, political, racial, linguistic, social, philosophical, and even geographical colourations. Scholars as well as commentators have continued to grapple with it as it has assumed a syncretistic or intersectional characterisation. The same applies to, "what is Africa?" because of the defined Western construct of its geography. This foray of concepts appears to be captured in 'I am an African', a treatise that exudes the telos of African past, present and the unwavering hope that the future of Africans and Africa is great in spite of the cynicism and loss of faith that the present seems to have foisted on the minds of many an African. Through a critical analysis, it is argued that African religion has a value that is capable of resolving the contentious identity crisis of an African.

African extreme poverty is probably a function (although not solely) of the balkanized post-colonial geopolitics of Africa. It is also probably a function (although not solely) of the income distribution generated by a typically perverse African political economy, through its effect on the allocation of resources to development. As between these two causes, the second is probably much the more important. This reinterpretation puts considerably more of the blame for African poverty on the Western great powers than does the "poverty trap" analytic that is a common contemporary way of thinking about the African economic situation.

African and external approaches to security governance and reform have come to stress the importance of local, national and regional ownership, embodied at the national level by the concept of "local ownership" of Security Sector Reform and in the recourse to regional and sub-regional security mechanisms as "African solutions to African problems". While a normative consensus on this idea seems to have emerged in the policy sphere, we ask what traits can be discerned in the national and regional discourses and practices of security governance that might be plausibly considered specifically African. This article thus explores the discourses and practices of attempts to link aspects of security governance to specific times and places at the national and regional levels in Africa. Tracing the discursive recourse to identity across four eras of modern African history, we argue that specifically African traits of security governance at national and regional levels can be discerned in institutional legacies of repression and poor security governance, as well as the discursive commitment to norms of human security at the regional level, as embodied in the African Peace and Security Architecture.

AFRICAN CINEMA: ADDRESSEE UNKNOWN Thirty years after Sembene's pioneering Borom Sarret, this is a moment of celebration but also of self-assessment for emergent African cinema -- an opportunity to think through questions of funding, the basis of production, and the way that various African films address their different audiences. Pieces of Identity In Europe and North America a nebulous imaginary unity is projected onto Africa. This lazily assumed misconception continues to underpin the distorting insularity and ignorance of the north. It is precisely an imaginary, implicit unity and not to be confused with the distinct political unity proposed by the project of Pan-Africanism, built from conscious political and cultural alliances. One does not have to be too familiar with the continent to understand that there are also many Africas -- culturally, politically, socially. Indeed more than a thousand languages are spoken in Africa and there are as many.

Negotiations on Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) between the EU and African governments have dragged on since 2002. They were confined by the framework of the Cotonou Agreement, a cornerstone of ACP–EU development cooperation on the one hand and limiting WTO rules on the other. The EPAs were meant not just to liberalize trade but also to promote development in Africa. However, high-flying expectations of creating a win-win situation in a partnership of equals were apparently dashed. Agenda-setting by Brussels left it with grandiose declarations about partnerships between equals , development orientation, promotion of inclusive growth and regional integration with due attention to WTO-compatible regulations. According to the EU's Roadmap 2014 to 2017 (EU 2014), all this should be realized by 2017 by way of exemplary EPAs. The major issues at stake have been especially pronounced in the ongoing negotiations on West African EPAs. Contentious issues were legion.

Broad terms such as Black, African, or Black African are entrenched in scientific writings although there is considerable diversity within African descent populations and such terms may be both offensive and inaccurate. This paper outlines the heterogeneity within African populations, and discusses the strengths and limitations of the term Black and related labels from epidemiological and public health perspectives in Europe and the USA. This paper calls for debate on appropriate terminologies for African descent populations and concludes with the proposals that (1) describing the population under consideration is of paramount importance (2) the word African origin or simply African is an appropriate and necessary prefix for an ethnic label, for example, African Caribbean or African Kenyan or African Surinamese (3) documents should define the ethnic labels (4) the label Black should be phased out except when used in political contexts.

Da Wissen jedoch immer eine bestimmte politische Implementation aufweist, auch wenn es noch so sehr nach objektivierenden Kriterien produziert zu sein scheint, lässt sich die in ihm aufzeigbare Perspektivität nach Kilombas Ansicht auch anders besetzen. Bereits an gewählten Forschungsfeldern bzw. ihren Rahmenbedingungen, Begriffen oder auch Ausdrucksweisen oder vom unberücksichtigt Bleiben nicht-weißer WissenschaftlerInnen bzw. ihrer Publikationen, zeigen sich ausgrenzende Praktiken. Damit fängt der Rassismus im Feld der Wissenschaft weder an, noch hört er dort auf, wie Kilomba fortführt.

Booklet ; The African Union envisions and is striving for an integrated African economic social, cultural and political development agenda: A prosperous Africa at peace with itself and its partners. The New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) initiative integrated into the AUC process which makes a new beginning, aims to enable the continent to not only reduce poverty but also propel to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The AU also aims 'inter alia' to enhance its leadership role for the promotion of peace, security and good governance. These and other efforts are to be driven by Africa's own citizens, whom the AU hopes would become a healthy, skilled and dynamic force able to compete in the global market

Published Article ; This article reviews the perspectives on the rights, roles and endeavours of women in the South African work environment. In an attempt to achieve this objective, the article commences with a holistic approach on the evolution of women's rights and roles. The remainder gives perspectives on the South African labour force and finally outlines the importance of South African legislation on the advancement of women. The situation of African women is, in particular referred to, as it was evident during 1995 and earlier that African females were considerably under-represented in various sectors of the workforce. African women were, for example, introduced into the management environment as recently as the 1980s, while supportive legislation only came into place in the 1990s.
