Grounded in rich empirical research and providing a timely contribution to debates on engagements with feminism, Repudiating Feminism explores how young German and British women think, talk and feel about feminism. Drawing on in-depth interviews with women from different racial and class backgrounds, and with different sexual orientations, Repudiating Feminism reveals how young women's diverse positionings intersect with their views of feminism.
The link between Hitler's Third Reich and European royalty has gone largely unexplored due to the secrecy surrounding royal families. Now, in Royals and the Reich, Jonathan Petropoulos uses unprecedented access to royal archives to tell the fascinating story of the Princes of Hesse and the important role they played in the Nazi regime. Princes Philipp and Christoph von Hessen-Kassel, great-grandsons of Queen Victoria of England, had been humiliated by defeat in WWI and, like much of the German aristocracy, feared the social unrest wrought by the ineffectual Weimar Republic.

This book traces the activity of the neo-Nazis in Germany from the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 to the present. Lewis, who lives in Germany, has based this pioneering study on first-hand research. He emphasizes the impact of unification on the growth of right-wing militancy throughout Germany, providing examples of neo-Nazi and skinhead activities, as well as the government's efforts to control the growing extremist movement. Although the movement remains relatively small, five years after unification, it is one that bears watching. The first chapter reviews the events surrounding the unification and sets the stage for the increasingly vocal neo-Nazi movement. The primary goal of the following chapters is to follow the movement's chronological evolution from unification through the high points in 1992 and 1993 to the governmental efforts to reduce the growing threat in 1994. Key to the discussions are the examples of violence and brutality directly linked to the neo-Nazis in the 1990s. Numerous incidents are cited that reflect the sheer brutality and wanton disregard for authority in a newly formed nation struggling financially and emotionally with the rigors of bringing two divergent societies together. Imbedded in the chronological dialogue are short, personal sketches of leading neo-Nazis, both inside and outside Germany, who directly influence the movement. The entire book encapsulates the rise, once again, of those elements of Hitler's Third Reich that were found to be so abhorrent in the 1930s and 1940s.
This book provides the first thorough examination of the peace movement in pre-World War I Germany, concentrating on the factors in German politics and society that account for the movement's weakness. The author draws on a wide range of documents to survey the history, organization, and ideologies of the peace groups, placing them in their social and political context. Working through schools, churches, the press, political parties, and other opinion-forming groups, the German peace movement attempted systematically to promote the idea that the world's nations composed a harmonious community in which law was the proper means for resolving disputes. Except for small pockets of support, however, the movement met only resistance-resistance greater, the author contends, than elsewhere in the West. Evaluating the reasons for hostility to the peace movement in Germany, he concludes that dominant features of German political culture emphasized the inevitability of international conflict, in the final analysis because Imperial Germany's ruling elites feared the domestic as well as the international implications of the movement's program. International audience ; This paper questions the notion of peripheralisation as a key to analyse the dynamics of small cities in the Land of Mecklenburg-West-Pomerania, a rural region in North-Eastern Germany. It will be shown how small cities can be affected by the four dimensions of peripheralisation: loss of population, economic and infrastructural weakening, dependence (in a political meaning) and stigmatisation. This approach stresses the asymmetry of flows and the dependency relationships of peripheral regions. Development perspectives of small cities are influenced by these trends: some cities try to go against them and set up new strategies to attract inhabitants and to change the image of their territory, both at the local and federal scale. On the contrary, others seem to be resigned and are unable to implement such strategies.
