This article presents a state-of-the-art description of political theory and analyses the role of political theory within the discipline of political science. It starts by describing two dominant approaches within the sub-discipline: conceptual political theory and normative political theory. Secondly, it situates political theory as separated from political science in general and from actual political debates. Thirdly, it analyses the role of methodology in normative political theory. I argue that the most important contribution of political theory to political science in general is its emphasis on the fact that politics is first and foremost a normative endeavor and that any political-scientific analysis should always be aware of this normative character. This article is an intervention into a recent OZP debate on the future of political science as a discipline. Its main goal is to mediate between the respective positions of Ulrich Brand's and Helmut Kramer's conception of a critical project and Thomas Konig's presentation of organisational preliminaries of an academic project of political science. To this end, I firstly reformulate the essentials of a project of critique, referring on a thick notion of critique. Consequently, the relationship of the disciplinary and critical side of political science is rearranged on the basis of an appropriation of certain deliberations on discipline formation and philosophy of science, which centrally draw on the philosophy of Critical Realism. Summary
I discuss the dilemma of humanities in the digital age to record interpretations of data, which creates more data that needs to be interpreted. Humanities researchers and machines are tangled in a complex interpretation process: machines mimicking human behaviour and applying this to massive amounts of data. Studying and analysing this process sheds new lights on human interpretation but also on humanities as a discipline.

Three stages of Dutch research on women & politics are delineated: (1) early research aimed at filling the gaps in knowledge about women's political participation & attitudes; (2) in the second stage, research addressed issues raised by feminism & debates about the scope of the political, & (3) in a now emerging third stage, interest is renewed in the major concepts of the Western political tradition, in which the genderedness of concepts is at stake. This stage may lead to a new paradigm for the discipline, relinking normative with empirical concerns. It is precisely the dominance of the empirical tradition in the Netherlands that prevents the incorporation of insights derived from feminist theory in the analysis of political behavior; however, reappraisal of the normative dimension & the domain of the discipline may reverse this trend. 114 References. Abstract
The appeal and challenges of creative research methods
Attention for the use of creative research methods in various scientific disciplines is increasing. In this article, several reasons are given as to why researchers are drawn to these methods. The challenges that researchers may face in using these methods are also described. The article ends with a brief outlook on the possible future of creative methods, pointing to how they can contribute to acquiring acknowledge and tap into different types of knowledge.

Palliative care in the picture?!
This article describes a video-based observation research method to investigate the approach of healthcare professionals in a Dutch hospital when identifying palliative patients. We analyzed video recordings of eight multidisciplinary consultation meetings of four medical disciplines: cardiology, oncology, urology and geriatric care. The method of video-based observation suited the aim of this research. The most valuable aspects were the subtleties (e.g. non-verbal information) in interdisciplinary communication about palliative patients.

'Zie je uitkeringsgerechtigden tegenwoordig als criminelen?' vroeg een collega me, wijzend naar het boek van Noaks en Wincup op mijn bureau. Ter voorbereiding op een onderzoek naar fraude in de sociale zekerheid leek het me goed eens te kijken wat een criminologische invalshoek kan opleveren. Volgens de flaptekst is het boek van Noaks en Wincup uitermate geschikt voor deze taak: 'a comprehensive guide to both the theory and practice of qualitative criminological research (...), an invaluable resource for students, researchers, lecturers and trainers, helping them to undertake effective research in criminology and related disciplines'.
