"Vor dreißig Jahren, am 26. März 1979, wurde der israelisch-ägyptische Friedensvertrag abgeschlossen. Dieser war aus dem Rahmenvertrag von Camp David vom 17. September 1978 hervorgegangen, der neben dem israelisch-ägyptischen Friedensschluss auch vorsah, umfassenden Frieden im Nahen Osten zu schaffen. Spannungen und Konflikte bis in die Gegenwart - wie jüngst der Gazakrieg - zeigen jedoch, dass es um solch einen umfassenden Frieden schlecht bestellt ist. Camp David hat zu einem dauerhaften Frieden zwischen Ägypten und Israel geführt und damit auch dem jordanisch-israelischen Friedensschluss von 1994 den Weg bereitet. Den Kalten Krieg im Nahen Osten hat der Friedensvertrag bereits 1979 zu Gunsten der USA beendet. Folgende problematischen Ergebnisse sind gleichwohl bis heute bedeutsam: Ägypten tritt seit 1979 als Vermittler zwischen der arabisch-palästinensischen und der israelischen Seite auf, ist jedoch durch innen- wie außenpolitische Faktoren in seinen Möglichkeiten, dieser Rolle gerecht zu werden, erheblich beeinträchtigt. Seine gescheiterte Diplomatie im Kontext des Gazakrieges hat dies verdeutlicht. Camp David hat die Entwicklung eines israelisch-arabischen Friedens eher behindert als begünstigt. Das Abkommen führte mittelbar zur Bildung des Lagers 'aufrechter Frontstaaten' gegen Israel und zur syrisch-iranischen Allianz, die das Lager der Frontstaaten stärkt und innerarabische Spannungen erhöht. Auch für den israelisch-palästinensischen Friedensprozess hat sich Camp David als hinderlich herausgestellt. Der Separatfrieden trug zur Islamisierung des palästinensischen Nationalismus und zu einem erheblichen Machtzugewinn islamistischer Gruppierungen bei. Der territoriale Herrschaftskonflikt lädt sich somit zunehmend ideologisch auf." (Autorenreferat)
